Medical MarijuanaThe public expects police to act with discretion, compassion and responsibility.
Editor, The Times: The Times writer twice referred to patient David Means' 49 young marijuana plants as a "forest." I know Washington state is being clear-cut to obivion, but this is a bit of a stretch. I will, however, give the author credit for refraining from slanted and hackneyed innuendo like "high hopes," "hashing it out," etc., that only serve to keep the focus off the cruelty and piracy of the police and off our antiquated marijuana laws in general ("Marijuana law trips up patients and police," June 14). Leo Poort, Seattle Police Department legal adviser, said the public expects vigorous enforcement, investigation and seizure of drugs from citizens who "totally push the envelope and go beyond what the law allows." Mr. Poort, the public also expects police to act with discretion, compassion and responsibility. If our police force has the time and resources to devote to investigating and destroying the lives of nonviolent medical patients, then it is time to dramatically reduce our police-department funding. Kevin Nelson, Bow A beneficial effect Carol M. Ostrom's article on the Seattle police bust in David Means' apartment will have a beneficial effect if it leads to open debate on the law concerning possession of marijuana and clarification of that law for the police and for legal users of marijuana. But there should be more. There should also be open and public discussion of the police treatment of Means and of the extensive and purposeful damage done by the police. It was an informative article, well-written. Let's hope it does some good. Tom Difloe, Camano Island Give us a chance I am writing to you hopefully to educate, and maybe even gain more medical-marijuana supporters. I am extremely upset with people classifying marijuana as a "drug." Marijuana is a "plant" that many people, like myself, use as a highly effective medicine. I have not been diagnosed with cancer, AIDS or any physical disease. I have been diagnosed bipolar (manic-depressive). I have been treated with a variety of different pills, but none has had the effect on my disease that cannabis has had. I believe marijuana is a miracle plant and that God saw that and placed it on this Earth. Otherwise, why would this plant be here if it was so bad? I would like to ask one closing favor from anyone who is willing to make a change to just take a few seconds to open your mind; give us a chance to make a difference. How can millions of hippies around the world be wrong? Tony Smith, Tacoma

Are these people serious?
It seems that the people that are fighting for marijuana the hardest are these stupid people that just do it primarily because someone told them they couldn't. I'm almost willing to bet that if they did legalize it, usage among the public that doesn't use it for medicinal reasons would go down. People don't really dislike weed more than the peole that dislike drinking and the idiots related to alcohol. People either never tried it or they're afraid to like it because the goverment has posted so many attacks against the {FREE} people, that now the population says that marijuana is terrible. Which it is, compared to them loosing there car, job or career, or they could even loose their child. While medicinal marijuana usage is being okayed by the "armani suits" we vote for, people fail to realize in europe you never had to go see a doctor for these problems because the remedy was already available. The problem lies in these peoples wallets. Over 90 percent of the jails is filled with drug offenders and more than half of that is marijuana user's. While these people have a peice of paper saying "It's ok for you" the rest of us have to acquire physical ailments.I think it is quite hilarious that when it comes to taking life away it's freedom of choice. When it comes to marijuana we get no choices, no freedom's, and pay the goverment larges sums of money when we get caught. I glad we can at the very least still talk about it and vent on each other about "The Man".
