Lexington, Ky. -- A University of Kentucky pharmacy researcher is working to create a prescription patch to deliver marijuana-like chemicals to ease nausea and stimulate appetite in people with AIDS and cancer. The patch would be a breakthrough because it could administer beneficial marijuana chemicals without inhaling the illegal plant. Most states outlaw smoking marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Audra Stinchcomb's patch idea received $361,000 in funding three years ago by the American Cancer Society."This is pioneering work," said David Ringer, scientific program director for the American Cancer Society. "It's a very novel use of cannabinoids."Stinchcomb has applied for a patent related to the technology. Her patch will use synthetic cannabinoids -- active marijuana compounds created in a chemist's lab -- not stuff directly extracted from the illicit plant."It's a very hot area of drug development," said Peter Crooks, a UK pharmacy professor who specializes in new drug discovery. "The potential is enormous."Human testing could follow once initial studies are complete. If all goes well, the patch could be commercially available in five years.Cannabinoids have significant potential for pain treatment related to neuropathy, a common type of nerve damage, which isn't well controlled with current medications, Crooks said. The compounds also could be used for treatment of depression, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease and more."They're much safer as drugs," said Stinchcomb, 37, who arrived at UK in 2001 from the Albany College of Pharmacy in New York. "You never hear of people being stoned to death."Researchers think cannabinoids don't have the significant side effects -- dependency, nausea, vomiting -- that occur with morphine-based drugs now common in pain treatment.Though not well known, a cannabis-based prescription capsule has been available in the United States for more than 15 years. Marinol (dronabinol), approved by the FDA in 1985, treats nausea, vomiting and severe loss of appetite from chemotherapy or AIDS.Research with marijuana-related compounds or any drug classified as a Schedule 1 controlled substance requires a government permit, inspection by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, security checks of the facility and lab staff and other requirements. The red tape involved also discourages some researchers, said Mary Lynn Mathre, a registered nurse, addictions specialist and organizer of the National Clinical Conference on Cannabis Therapeutics.Still, cannabinoid research is becoming more common.A THC-based rectal suppository is in development at the University of Mississippi. THC, delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol, is a main intoxicating chemical in marijuana. Researchers at Virginia Commonwealth University are looking into THC's potential to reduce dependence for people on long-term morphine therapy. Other researchers are developing inhalers, vaporizers and lozenges that are placed under the tongue.Complete Title: Researcher Working On Medical Patch To Deliver Marijuana-Like ChemicalsSource: Associated Press Published: August 20, 2003Copyright: 2003 Associated Press Related Articles & Web Site:Patients Out of Timehttp://www.medicalcannabis.com/ Medpot Stars Give for Patients http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread13742.shtmlRecognizing Marijuana's Many Medicinal Benefitshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread12464.shtml

More Fakery in Medicine?
There they go again. Synthetic cannabanoids are ok and funding for research is granted and DEA permits are granted, while nothing natural or beneficial results. More drugs, less freeedom. When will a real study or supply mechanism be allowed in the USA? England and Canada have them, we don't. Are we a third class country? Must we settle for synthetics and wait for the rest of the world to benefit from legalization of a "critical" medicine. We here in Hawaii are chomping at the bit to do research and supply other projects domestically with the "shiznit" baby! QUALITY COUNTS!
Oh, well. Another day of low level helicopter overflights on videotape. There was another eradication mission today!
A few well placed phonecalls to Vice and DLNR about flight elevation violations by our police. They should just get with it and approve our proposals to do it right! We could do it better with aloha! Then they could fly somewhere else or maybe even catch some criminals doing real crimes. This is paradise you know!

now, how much
how much can a big bird like the albatross carry? how wide a sea can it cross? what are its migration routes, if indeed it migrates? ST Coleridge knew something of the albatross, let me check and come back.you think i'm being silly, eh? No! Carlos may have been the Henry Ford of smuggling, but I am going to be the Tarzan of smuggling!

The Bright Side
Our "big brother" very closely resembles the older brother in the basement on that ridiculous new anti-cannabis/anti-truth tv ad promulgating across the airwaves. Our "big brother" is a disfunctional loser who lies, steals, threatens and tortures those of us who dare to disagree. The older brother on the tv commercial apparently has a couple of LOSER PARENTS for letting him veg in the basement.I don't know anybody who resembles the older brother on the tv ad. There's a whole group of anti-christ evil demons who've claimed God as their leader but lie, steal, threaten, torture and murder those who dare to disagree.I think that if there is truly a God in the heavens then God is probably about as fed up with this mess as we are.God is love, compassion, caring, love, truth, respect, love, benevolence, grace, love, faith, hope, love ... LOVE = COMPASSION = MERCY!If anybody can find a gram of any of the above mentioned God-like characteristics in ANYBODY in law enforcement or politics then you've found something more rare than somebody winning four different lotteries on the same day who then gets hit by lightning on the way to collect their money. The Rev. I don't think I have anything to say about the article myself. It's just the way it is. Big Brother is reaching full maturity unfortunately.

you're pretty quick! but No comment
There are already several comments at the smirking chimp link. I am examining the migration patterns of animals, large and small, that cross international borders.http://www.wyomingoutdoorcouncil.org/programs/wildlife/migration_map.htmlhttp://www.learner.org/jnorth/images/graphics/c/caribou_map052902.htmlI enjoy looking at pretty maps and suspect that people are using wildlife to transport drugs. Americans are untroubled by US helicopters mowing down inferior races or cultures that hold false religious beliefs, but I wonder how they would react to an armada of Blackhawks mowing down a herd of wildebeasts.you know dogs can go right through the Canadian border - those sensors are set to alert only to beings as tall as a man. now on to the albatross.

Heads Up!
New "Victory Bill" drafted in Congress:"This bill would treat drug possession as a
'terrorist offense' and drug dealers as
'narco-terrorist kingpins,' " the aide argued.
"To say that terrorist groups use a small
percentage of the drug trafficking in the
United States to finance terrorism may be a
fair point, but this bill would allow the
government to prosecute most drug cases
as terrorism cases."http://www.smirkingchimp.com/article.php?sid=12713&mode=nested&order=0Now I know why Republicans are placing their sacrificial killer women in charge of the, as argued here recently by kaptinemo, soon-to-expire DEA. Homeland Security is taking charge of it all. The drug war is about to be militarized and won't need the DEA. As governor of PA, Tom Ridge ordered the National Guard to bust crack houses for some exciting TV broadcasts, and he's on record as favoring military control in domestic drug operations. That's why he was appointed, and I said so on the day he was appointed.

thanks for the tip, ff!
I get my info from a cop too.Interesting! Maggots are used in treatment of gangrene and other infection. They eat dead tissue but not healthy tissue - lots of maggots were busy during the civil war. Now cannabinoids are broken down into metabolites - these will not get you high. ( But I've always thought that someone ought to look into this and see how difficult a process it might be to reconstitute the cannabinoids from the metabolites - use your weed over and over, get it?This is how the Vikings and some Siberian tribes handled their muscarin, the active ingredient of their prized fly agarics ( amanita muscaria, as I recall). No kidding - the rich tribesmen had mushrooms, the poor hung around with collection cups. Now this suggests that some drugs could be stored and safely transported within living things - maggots, reindeer, whatever. You know we're gonna win!

hold on there!
Somehow it doesn't seem quite right that one should be smoking patches. Look, what's in those patches? Cannabinoids are soluble in alcohol, but not water, so they may not pass thru the skin very well, right? Then whatever is in those patches must be some kind of salt of the cannabinoids, weed-HCl, for example. You probably don't want to smoke that - ever tried smoking cocaine? Ha! You would switch to crack in a jiffy! This water soluble stuff should be injected after extraction from the patch. If you remove the HCl in a base solution, maybe you smoke that: soak the patch in baking soda before smoking, right?Phew! It would really be simpler to just have your physician recommend joints. After all, who wants to wait five years for a patch?

One could put a patch on and use hot blow dryer to speed the release of fake chemical.Got that from a dumb cop tellin to a reporter who dutifully wrote the info down. He quoted at the end of the quote, "I have'nt seen many cases like that."In no way do I suggest anyone do that. I much rather offer you a joint. ;)It's the real thing!pazff

a suppository?
I wonder if I could use a joint the same way as a suppository and get the same results? I sure wouldn't light it, though.

BOTOX, LEACHES AND MAGGOTS!!!!!!
The most deadly natural toxin known to mankind is being injected with a needle and syringe into the muscles under the skin to reduce WRINKLES! It's also being injected into the muscles of stroke victims to reduce the jerking and tight muscles that interfere with rehabilitation.Leaches and maggots are incredibly effective at preserving human tissue and preventing necrosis. A chemical excreted by maggots helps to preserve and protect damaged tissue. This sounds like medieval quackery at first thought, but it is considered sound medical science. Why is inhaling a little bit of smoke so hard to accept, especially since we don't appear to have botulism receptors or naturally occurring botulism in our bodies? The Rev. yes, they can
I've checked, and the patches can certainly be smoked. I am informed that one gets a better, quicker buzz by smoking the patches because what may take hours to diffuse through the skin can be delivered to the brain at once with the use of a medical pipe. Are there any other ways to use the patches?

can the patch be smoked?
I wonder if a dog would detect these patches as contraband.

the synthetics are petrocherm based!!
of course, synthetics are based on petrochem derivatives not nasty dirty plants that farmers grow and make you HIGH!!
syntetics can just as easily be called petrochemicals, as agricultural pesticides are. We all Know ANY use of petrochems are GOOD!! and these synthetics do not exist in nature, Hence they are patentable, so if you grow your own , JAIL, they want you to buy the fake stuff. not waste all that potential profit on a plant anyone can grow.

will still be available. tastes better than the patch, so there. lots of frothy fluff with all of this research. I prefer the real thing.

Still synthetics
The almighty US $ rules yet again. No real cannabinoid extracts being used. Processing chemicals though to form a look-a-like to the naturally occurring creates jobs and thus generates a cash flow so that's what gets approved for funding. At least it's begininng to look like the predictions of "the asirin of the 21st century" may have some validity. Only the synthetics are currently being allowed though. Hey, who wants a synthetic Big Mac? How about a synthetic t-bone or ribeye to go with that synthetic baked potato? Next up, synthetic water to make ice for your synthetic fruit juice.

Look at what the reporter did
The reporter is faced with a baffling circumstance -- the active chemicals that make marijuana marijuana are good, they must be good because they are being made into a patch for consumers.Well then how could marijuana itself be bad? The poor reporter wracks his or her brain to get the answer.AHA! The reporter realizes -- people SMOKE marijuana, and SMOKING is bad!Yes! That's why we have all those potheads locked in steel cages being raped and forced to live in fear!Because smoking is bad. Ah yes, of course. SMOKING marijuana is illegal. Putting it in a patch should be legal. Now it all makes sense, and the reporter can go home and have a beer.

How do these people get jobs?
There are no laws against smoking marijuana. There are laws against possessing marijuana, and those laws apply no matter how you choose to consume your marijuana. This article presents us with the impression that the only reason why marijuana is illegal is because it is SMOKED.They need a feedback address at AP because this is ridiculous. Journalists today are so incompetent that they can't even get the drug laws right.Half the news editors in this country need to be fired, because they can't even handle a basic fact like the law, which is written down, and not a matter of opinion, and cxan easily be checked online.Half the news editors in this country need to be fired. There should be a national news fact test administered to editors every year and editors who are out of touch with simple facts like the drug laws and who can't be bothered to even go online to look them up will lose their certification to edit news for the public.
