Marijuana Mainstream: American as Mary Jane

The latest issue of Rolling Stone featured a sobering report about the Drug Enforcement Administration's recent raids on head shops, those bastions of 1970s commercial kitsch: the smiley faces, the feathery roach clips, the blacklight posters. The feds are seizing bongs, water pipes and other smoking accessories from mini-mall storefronts across the country. Ten pages later in the same issue began the cover story on Eminem, headlined "The Voice of America." The lead image: a full-page close-up of the paleface rapper sucking in a monstrous hit from a hefty orange bong.
The DEA may be winning the occasional battle. But when it comes to marijuana, the government is clearly losing the big war in the popular consciousness. Even the names of the agency's own undertaking are catchy and wry: Operation Pipe Dreams and Operation Headhunter. Culturally, we may be more permissive about of pot smoking than ever before. "Saturday Night Live" has a recurring skit called "Jarrett's Room," a mock dormitory broadcast in which a crew of addle-brained best buds mug for the camera, shamelessly brandishing their favorite bong on network television. On the same show a while back, the hip-hop group Cypress Hill smoked pot openly during its musical performance. In "Half-Baked," the movie that introduced comedian Dave Chappelle, the dudes call their most precious domestic accoutrement "Billy Bong Thornton." The movie features comical, knowing cameos by some of the country's favorite entertainers, including chronic vipers Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg. Chappelle's girlfriend is named -- what else? -- Mary Jane. When she tries to convince him his habit is a bad one, a "gateway" drug, he blanches. "Everyone knows it leads to other stuff," she hectors. Neil Young's Saturday Night Preview of Greendale
8 PM To 2 AM ETHi Everyone,Just a friendly reminder that Neil Young's Saturday Night song from Greendale will start at 8 PM ET. This weeks song is called Devil's Sidewalk. A Few Words from Devil's Sidewalk:Well the red light shinesOn the streets of hateWhere the devil dinesWho knows what he ate"It's a simple thingTrying to stay afloat"The captain saidWithout his boatSome things are getting betterOther things a little worseIt's a situationMuch like a curse Snipped: Neil Young Talks Before He Plays The Song. There's a jail in Greendale. It's been there since 1911. That's an old building by American standards. Also, Satan has been living in the jail since 1911. He's basically been having his way with Greendale, although there's proof that he escapes Greendale quite consistently and travels throughout the world. He's not restricted to the jail, he just likes it there. He can walk through the walls or through the front door, melt through the bars. He really does whatever he wants to do - including making fun of the inmates, which is one of his great pastimes. You get busted and thrown in that jail and you're in for quite a trip. Sometimes people see the devil in store windows, reflections of him behind them, looking over their shoulders as they look in at the wares that are available. Then they'll look around and he won't be there. Now Greendale is a coastal town with a beautiful harbor. And down at the old end of the harbor there's a dilapidated pier that is condemned. And at the end of that pier, there's a little shack, and it says "Fish" on the shack. Of course nobody goes out there because you're not supposed to. It's condemned. The new dock is about half a mile away and it's beautiful, built out of cement and plastic. It's blue and gray, and it will be there forever. Captain John Green has a sailboat that he keeps right near the end of the condemned dock. And he never goes into Greendale. He sends his crew in for him. Captain Green is about 75 - he's Grandpa's brother. His crew's about 19, a couple of kids: a helmsman and a mate. And he's sending them into Greendale to get supplies and warning them not to spend too much time there, to come right back as soon as they get what they need. 8 PM To 2 AM ET -- 5 PM To 11 PM PacificWatch and Listen Here: http://www.neilyoung.com/premiere.htmlGreendale - Summer 2003: http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/young.htmGreendale Lyrics: Neil Young and Crazy Horse 2003: http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/greendale.htm

I'm glad you finally got to see and hear one of the songs. I saved it so I can have it for later. They removed the first 2 but Falling from Above I still have and now Bandit. Have almost all the words memorized! LOL!I watched Greendale two times when it was in Dublin because they left it on and I got the lyrics then saw him live so I understand the story plot. The woman in front of me jumped up and was screaming and clapping and saying Yes! Yes! Yes! when Bandit ending. Everyone was humming Someday you'll find everything you're looking for! That is so true! I'll never forget it.

I Finally Got the Greendale Video Working!
I tried Quicktime and it locked up the web page. It usually works fine. I missed the last two weeks, but today I switched to Windows Media Player, which I usually have trouble with, and it worked! The visuals were clear, but very tiny. I couldn't really follow them, but the music was typically great. "Someday you'll find everthing you're looking for." How appropriate: I just took a bunch of Summer of Legalization Tour t-shirts to the printer for the Rolling Stones concert. Please do not send orders to my email, as I am currently unable to access it.ego transcendence follows ego destruction, the wheel of life turns, the entrepreneur rises like a phoenix.

Neil Young's Saturday Night Preview of Greendale
8 PM To 2 AM ETHi Everyone,I'm sure by now you have heard of ' Greendale ' Neil Young's Rock Opera for lack of knowing exactly what to call it except great. When he played Bandit he sat down and it was only him and he got a standing ovation for this song. He got many standing ovations but people were shouting and clapping when he finished singing ' Bandit ' and I wish I could tell you by typing how great it was but I don't know how. Words from Bandit:Turn the pages of this old bookSounds (Feels?) familiar, it may be worth a second lookWrapping up dope in a paper bagTalking to yourself taking a dragWhat does it matter the things you sayThey'll never hear it anywaySnipped:Someday you'll find what you're looking forSomeday you'll find everything you're looking forSomeday you'll find everything you're looking forSomeday you'll find everything you're looking for, yeahNeil Young Talks Before He Plays The Song.Neil Young's Words: Well, this is a story about Earl Green. I relate to Earl, I really do. I hope I can make it through this next one. It's rather personal. When that instrumental was happening there at the end, while I was playing harmonica, the devil went to Earl's studio. Earl's a painter. He went down to his studio and materialized there, and cleaned Earl's glasses. He cleaned his glasses. His spectacles. Earl was a painter and he was a Vietnam vet. There's a lot of those. He specialized in psychedelic paintings. He painted a lot. Sun used to love to watch him. She'd come in from the fields when she working on something, I don't know what, a bunch of hay. She took a lot of hay out into the field in a big truck. For an 18-year-old beautiful girl, she could handle a truck real well. She kept taking more and more hay out there, and nobody knew what she was doing. But she'd come back at the end of the day and see her dad working in the studio, painting. He was not a very successful painter, and he never did sell anything, but he always tried. He took them to the Gallery L on Main Street. Lenore was the owner of the gallery. He was always getting turned down. So like I said, the devil was in his studio, cleaning his glasses - very well. He didn't have those papers, but with that kind of breath, you don't need those papers. So Earl, seeing very clearly, shocked and amazed at the unbelievable painting of some guy wearing a red suit with red shoes and a Panama hat with a red hat band, standing there looking at him holding a sign that said "Alaska." Hitchhiking. Earl kept painting. He didn't know what he was doing but he suddenly painted the first human form he'd ever painted. From psychedelic paintings for 35 years to this guy. He was so surprised he said, "Well, I'm gonna take this down to the gallery and see what happens." So he got in his Winnebago - you know what a Winnebago is, just a big camper. I know there's the same kind of camper here, it's just with a big W on it. It looks like a big box, kind of like a refrigerator on wheels. He has it full of his paintings and he drives around all the time trying to sell his paintings. I'm so sorry you can't understand a fucking word I'm saying. Earl took the painting down to the gallery and Lenore loved the painting. "What a great painting you have, Earl." She took the painting right away and put it in the most prominent place in the gallery and said, "Anything else you paint, just bring it right in here immediately, we're gonna put it right up. 'Cause this is the best thing I've ever seen." Earl was shocked. Just the night before, before Earl painted the painting, he was out trying to sell his old paintings. Very depressed, he stopped at a motel in Greendale, got out his laptop computer and got on the Internet trying to find someplace to sell his paintings, turned on the TV and he spent some private moments there. 8 PM To 2 AM ET -- 5 PM To 11 PM PacificWatch and Listen Here: http://www.neilyoung.com/premiere.htmlGreendale - Summer 2003: http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/young.htmGreendale Lyrics: Neil Young and Crazy Horse 2003: http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/greendale.htm

mayan a Review from the Santa Cruz Sentinel
mayan I thought you might like to see what a town we all seem to respect says about Greendale!Neil Young Busts Out Rock Opera from ‘Greendale’July 23, 2003 Neil Young showed true artists are not afraid to try something new when he staged what came perilously close to a rock opera Friday night at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View. It was a brave effort, with solid music, and it served to give his supporters a blueprint on how to be a patriot and in an age when protest is challenged. His 2½ hours incorporated both new songs in a staged setting, followed by a high-energy, ear-ringing rock show, complete with old favorites. The show opened with the band in front, backed by three sets: an old cabin, the jail and a center riser with a screen and drop floor. This was no Equity production, though. Sets looked folksy, almost cartoon-like, and so was the level of performance. For it to make the full leap to rock opera, the actors would have to sing instead of lip synching to Neil, but then you wouldn’t get Neil’s unique brand of nasal whine, which actually served this production well. The song cycle tells the story of the Green family in the oceanside town of Greendale, surrounded by beautiful coastal mountains and forest. There were enough references to the Coast Highway to make the location pretty clear in the minds of the audience. Suffice it to say, the winding story had murder, intrigue, the media and one family’s horrible betrayal by the forces of corporate America. While leaving plenty of loose ends, plotwise, the play makes several well-received points: you have the right to live anonymously, being on TV isn’t really that great, corporate America is swallowing our lives whole, and we’ve got to save Mother Earth. Neil Young is being true to all he’s stood for over the years. Songs made the point that you need to show a little "love and affection" in how you live and that life is good on the "Double E." During the "Devil’s Sidewalk," a sign projected onscreen showing "Clear Channel — Support Our War" was greeted with jeers. All was backed by Neil and Crazy Horse in full fuzz guitar, angry-young-man mode. This was some of the best music from Neil Young and Crazy Horse in years, and Neil wasn’t afraid to stretch. "Carmichael" was long with lots of fuzz and feedback, in the trademark sound he pioneered. It still works. At the end a heartfelt "It’s good to be home" was surely reflected in the music. The songs really spoke the times. At one point, the stage darkened, Neil took an acoustic guitar and played by himself in "Bandit." As he sang, "Someday, you’ll find everything you’re looking for," a beautiful stillness took hold as audience and musician joined in the feeling of hope for the future. It was an awesome moment that resulted in a standing ovation and a quiet "I thought you’d like that" from Neil. As the cast of more than 50 took a stage bow to "Be the Rain," it was on to the second part of the show, a set of old favorites that showed why Neil Young is still a rock music icon. Crazy Horse was in fine form for a country- western "Losing Side," a version of "Hey, Hey, My My (Into the Black)" and "Like A Hurricane." An enthusiastic audience sang along to "Rockin’ in the Free World" to end the show on a note of hope and rebellion. If you missed the show and are intrigued, or perhaps attended and want more, Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release "Greendale" on CD and DVD in August on Reprise Records. http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2003/July/23/style/stories/07style.htm

LOok at how good things are getting up north, imagine the trend heading South! www.kucinich.us on why we need to end the war on drugs.
And how long will bush last before he goes on trial? Thats when cannabis laws will be at their weakest, as that is their 'heavy hand card'. Came in with nixon, going out with bush, my prediction.

If you are seeing Neil Young other then at Farm-Aid in September he does the whole DVD of Greendale. These links will show you how he was received in Ohio. It's the second article on this link.http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/young.htmAfter the play is over he sings 3 or 4 of his classic songs. He played Hey Hey, My My , Powderfinger and Rockin' in the Free World. He was so well received in Ohio that he played Roll Another Number For The Road!If you love Neil Young as an artist, activist you will love Greendale! I can't wait until it comes out on DVD. He shot all the video himself and the actors mouth his words that he sings. This is from last Saturday nights free preview. On Saturday night he plays one song from 8pm until 12. They take it down but this is the first song from Greendale. It is at 100 connection and blurry but you can listen to the first song if you have the connection. I'm going to see Neil in about two weeks! I can't wait! Did he play anything from "Greendale" when you saw him? He has so much material that I probably wouldn't know it if he did! I know it isn't due out until mid-August but he has been playing it over in Europe. He is also re-releasing "Hawks & Doves", "American Stars & Bars" & "Re-Actor" on the same day as "Greendale"!!! The popular culture has definitely embraced cannabis! The government has lost all credibility on the issue. I Can't wait for the new "Cheech & Chong" either! Chong's sentencing hearing is Sept. 11th(Yikes!). I hope that he gets a sweet deal & that the movie is completed by then. The cannabis plant is single-handedly exposing the greed & corruption of the federal government. Cannabis can feed, house & cloth us. Plus, it can make paper, plastics & fuel. It also provides the most versatile medicine on the planet! The feds know all of this & that is why they are so afraid. Their power base of pharmaceuticals & petrochemicals cannot compare to cannabis. Cannabis can sustain us & that scares the hell out of them! I like to think of cannabis as God's way of saying, "Don't mess with
Mother Nature"!!!The way out is the way in... German disbelief over 9/11:

From Snipped Part of Article
I really liked them mentioning Neil Young, Greendale and Sun Green in the article. It was great!Neil Young seems to agree on his forthcoming concept album, "Greendale." At one point in the narrative, environmentalist Sun Green runs afoul of the law. "Next day Sun Green got busted for pot, and it made the headline news," Young warbles. "But then the judges all got drunk, and the story got confused."
