Moncton — An activist campaigning for the legalization of marijuana was arrested Monday after lighting up in front of an RCMP detachment in Moncton. After spending about 20 minutes preaching to the mainly converted, Marc Emery of Vancouver fired up a large bong and within seconds was arrested for possession of a controlled substance.
"Marijuana is a wonderful substitute for all things," Mr. Emery told about 30 onlookers shortly before the arrest. "I've been smoking for 23 years. People should be growing it in their backyards."Mr. Emery said marijuana provides a certain enlightenment alcohol and other drugs don't."Passing a joint is a signal of universal peace. Is there anything wrong with feeling good? Something that's good for you, you should be doing all the time."RCMP Corporal Terry-Lee Kennedy said police will interview Mr. Emery and another man taken into custody before deciding whether to forward the file to the Crown to lay charges.Mr. Emery was in Moncton as part of his so-called Summer of Legalization Tour. He publishes Cannabis Culture magazine, runs a store that sells marijuana seeds, and heads the B.C. Marijuana Party. While he wasn't arrested during a similar protest in Halifax on the weekend, Mr. Emery was charged with possession during the first two stops on his tour, in Winnipeg and Regina. The federal government hopes to have its new marijuana legislation passed by the end of the year. Under the proposed laws, possession of up to 15 grams of pot — enough to roll about 15 to 20 joints — would be a minor offence without a criminal record.Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)Published: Monday, July 21, 2003 Copyright: 2003 The Globe and Mail CompanyContact: letters globeandmail.caWebsite: http://www.globeandmail.com/Related Articles & Web Sites:Pot-TVhttp://www.pot-tv.net/Cannabis Culture Magazinehttp://www.cannabisculture.com/BC Marijuana Partyhttp://www.bcmarijuanaparty.ca/The Halifax Police Station Goes To Pot http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16906.shtmlLegalization Tour Hits Nova Scotia http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16904.shtmlA Smoke of a Different Kind - St. John's Telegramhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16897.shtmlSummer Freedom Tour Comes To The Maritimes http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16893.shtml

Only in Canada...
Can a social activist like Mr. Emery be arrested so civilly; here in the States some adrenaline tripping yahoo porker would have split his skull open with one of their aluminum flashlights, and the judge at the arraignment would smile and say the cop hadn't made enough of an impression and suggested a few more blows would have been in order...But the Canadian police are going to learn just how expensive a lawsuit for illegal confiscation of a no-longer-controlled substance can be. I'd love to be in the courtroom when that happens...

One More Comment
There is one more thing that has happened at the smoke ins that is very important I think. Marc Emery is being seen by the police and also they hear what he is saying. The few tapes I've seen of the events when he is arrested he is cooperative and that must be something the police don't see that often. That in itself says a lot.

Marc Emery the cannabist
If he were a microbiologist, he would be in even bigger trouble. So far, he is only getting arrested. If I were him, I would not visit the US.February 9, 2002 (B): Dead microbiologist: Victor Korshunov, 56, is bashed over the head and killed at the entrance of his home in Moscow, Russia. He was the head of the microbiology sub-faculty at the Russian State Medical University and an expert in intestinal bacteria. [Pravda, 2/9/02, Globe and Mail, 5/4/02]February 10, 2002: Katherine Smith is killed a day before appearing in court on charges she helped five Muslim terrorists get illegal drivers licenses. Her car supposedly hit a tree and then caught on fire. The FBI later determined that gasoline was poured on her clothing before she died in an arson fire. A suicide note was found, but prosecutors say they are looking for murder suspects. One of the five Muslims, Sakhera Hammad, was found with a visitor's pass for the WTC, dated September 5, 2001, in his wallet. Hammad claims he was a plumber and worked on the WTC's sprinkler system. Smith was being investigated by the FBI; the five later plead guilty of fraud. [AP, 2/13/02, Reuters, 2/15/02, Go Memphis, 2/12/02, Memphis Commercial Appeal, 2/21/02]February 11, 2002: Dead microbiologist: Dr. Ian Langford, 40, is found dead, partially naked and wedged under a chair in his home in Norwich, England. When found, his house was described as "blood-spattered and apparently ransacked." He was an expert in environmental risks and disease and a senior Fellow at the University of East Anglia's Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment. One of his colleagues states: "Ian was without doubt one of Europe's leading experts on environmental risk, specializing in links between human health and environmental risk... He was one of the most brilliant colleagues I have ever had." [London Times, 2/13/02, Globe and Mail, 5/4/02]February 28, 2002 (B): Two dead microbiologists in San Francisco: While taking delivery of a pizza, Tanya Holzmayer, 46, is shot and killed by a colleague, Guyang Huang, 38, who then apparently shot himself. Holzmayer moved to the US from Russia in 1989. Her research focused on the part of the human molecular structure that could be affected best by medicine. Holzmayer was focusing on helping create new drugs that interfere with replication of the virus that causes AIDS. One year earlier, Holzmayer obeyed senior management orders to fire Huang.
