Vancouver -- A B.C. Web site called Underground Reefer Railway is helping prospective refugee claimants from the U.S. who face marijuana charges. The site offers advice on how to cross the border, claim refugee status and gain access to welfare and other social programs. It's aimed at marijuana activists who believe they're being prosecuted in the U.S.
"We recommend that people announce themselves as official marijuana refugees at the border and take it from there," said B.C. pot activist and site creator David Malmo-Levine. The refugee board in Vancouver is considering claims from two medical marijuana activists facing U.S. drug charges. Canadian Alliance MP Randy White says the claimants are abusing Canada's refugee system. "They're evading the law, and they're occupying precious time at refugee board hearings where genuine refugees should be getting the time," said White. Malmo-Levine says public opinion is on the side of the refugee claimants. Only one claim of refugee status from the U.S. has been accepted in the past 15 years.
