CTV News has learned that the federal government is about to make it easier to obtain medicinal marijuana -- but only because it has been forced to. Six months ago, an Ontario Superior Court judge ordered Health Canada to broaden access to medical marijuana. The judge said current laws made "seriously ill, vulnerable people deal with the criminal underworld to get medicine." While Ottawa is appealing that decision, the court imposed a deadline to set new rules for people who need pot but have trouble getting it legally. That deadline is Thursday.
So Ottawa plans to comply -- for the time being.Sources tell CTV News that doctors will be asked to distribute the marijuana grown in a Flin Flon, Manitoba grow lab. While officials had claimed its quality was too inconsistent to use, they now say 370 kilograms has passed the test.Alison Myrden is pleased. She's one of 580 Canadians with a medical permit to smoke marijuana, in her case to ease the pain of multiple sclerosis. She's took sick to grow her own and too poor to pay a dealer."I want a source. I don't want to have to buy it from the compassion centres or the black market," she explains. It appears Myrden will soon have that source. But the lawyer for medical users says the supply may only be temporary because Ottawa is simply meeting the court-ordered deadline. Lawyer Alan Young, who launched the appeal against the federal government, suspects Ottawa will only hand out a bit of pot, to buy time."It'll approve two or three different applications, see how that goes and hope the court overturns the judgment so they don't have to do it anymore," he says. Sources tell CTV that if Ottawa wins the appeal, it will likely halt distribution. Ottawa unveiled its plans for medical marijuana under the leadership of former health minister Allan Rock and soon began to grow a supply in an abandoned mine shaft. But when Anne McLellan took over the post, Health Canada announced it would not make any of its Flin Flon marijuana available because it first wanted to see scientific proof about whether the drug is effective. According to My Calculations.
370kg / 580 patients * 1000g/kg = 637.9310345g/patient637.9310345g / 28.5g/oz. = 22.38354507 oz./patient"Rosenfeld, with his doctor's support, was placed in Uncle Sam's medical marijuana program in 1982. The program stopped accepting new patients in 1992.He says he hasn't had a new tumor since and plays softball once a week, though he uses a designated runner. He gets 11 ounces of marijuana, rolled in cigarettes, delivered monthly to a local pharmacy, and he only pays courier costs. Marijuana is now his only medicine."--Stockbroker Using Uncle Sam's MMJ for 20 Years http://cannabisnews.com/news/14/thread14794.shtmlUsing the US government's Compassionate Investigational New Drug (IND) Program as a guide: 22oz. / 11oz./mo. = 2.4 months supply, and that doesn't include all the people denied access by government red tape and Canadian Medical Association nay-saying.

Pathetic Prohibitionist Pathology!
Canada is a boat without an oar when it comes to SAFE ACCESS NOW and sensible "drug" policy. The so-called federal government is playing chicken with the courts. Two Days before the deadline, they suddenly have 370 kilograms of suitable medical cannabis from the Flin Flon mine after stalling for 4 Years!!! Yeah, right."'Health Canada over four years has spent almost $10 million on its medical marijuana program and has yet to supply a single gram or seed to a single sick Canadian,' Philippe Lucas of Canadians for Safe Access, said in an interview Tuesday." --Government Research on MMJ Produces No Results http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16785.shtmlThis is well-reasoned government policy??? Where are the research studies Health Minister Anne McLellan claimed she needed, and why did she suddenly cancel the one that was scheduled? Inquiring minds want to know. "Rule number one is very important: an elephant never forgets."The Flin Flon Flip-Flop - Globe & Mail September 02, 2002
http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread13958.shtml ego transcendence follows ego destruction, stop trying to figure it out yourselves, Cabinet and Parliament, you have no clue, talk to the public, to the patients, and create a workable law or just let the courts do it for you!I am happy for Alison Myrden one of 580 Canadians with a medical permit, but the government has so far been very two-faced about the whole issue. Do not betray the medical cannabis patients: this is not the United States with its "marijuana is not medicine" lie.

Ottawa is appealing that decision, but the court imposed a deadline of Wednesday to set new rules for people who have a medical need for marijuana but can't get it legally.
