No Grow 'a Waste of Money:' Botanist

Vancouver -- A B.C. company says it has a product than can keep marijuana grow operations out of rented homes, but a plant expert suggests the promoter is blowing smoke. No Grow, a Kelowna firm, says it uses hemp pollen to make B.C. Bud go to seed. For about $500 a year, the company will ensure the spores are blown through homes via their central-heating systems, whether the furnace is running later or not, owner Michael Glendinning said Monday.
"It's a formula that's sprayed directly into your furnace fan, which is then distributed throughout the house," he said. "The particles ... seek out any marijuana plant . . . the female bud. It will attach itself to that and turn it to seed, rendering it virtually worthless."Pot grow-ops often use rented suburban homes to produce hundreds of valuable plants under high-intensity lighting systems. Police raids have done little to reduce the problem. Turning the pot plants to seed would make the product worthless, Glendinning said, adding the spores are viable for up two years. But botanist Douglas Justice said he thinks the idea is unworkable. "It might work very nicely in a lab in a single room or something like that," he said. "If you're sending it through a furnace you're going to have all sorts of ductwork that the pollen is going to deposit itself in. "My guess is that it won't have the desired effect."The pollen would have to be so thick it would cover the furniture and walls, possibly creating breathing problems for some people, said Justice, assistant director of the University of British Columbia's botanical garden and centre for plant research. "It would look like hell," he said. "Not only a real mess but I think a waste of money." But Glendinning insisted his No Grow product has deterrent value for worried landlords, just like any other security feature. "If you've had your home treated and you've got the stickers and the serial numbers on the doors and windows of the premise, potential growers aren't going in that house," he said. "They're going to seek out another house that is rentable."Note: Anti-pot grow-op spray is supposed to turn marijuana bud to seed, rendering the product worthless.Source: Canadian Press Published: Monday, July 07, 2003Copyright: 2003 The Canadian PressRelated Articles & Web Site:Cannabis News Canadian Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/can.htmNew Spray Aimed At Grow Ops http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16769.shtmlPot Growers No Worse Than Martini Drinkers http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16670.shtml

Still lame
Even if they DO use pollen. It doesn't stay viable for long in those sort of conditions, so not a big threat. My earlier comment about allergies and liability adhering to landlords still applies.
