A few dozen medical marijuana supporters who picketed outside the Sonoma County administration building told the board of supervisors they want funding for the Narcotics Task Force ended!
Tuesday's protest was partially spurred by last month's arrest of Kenneth Hayes in Petaluma, who was found growing 800 pot plants in greenhouses. Hayes, 32, and his supporters said he dispenses the pot for the Cannabis Helping to Alleviate Medical Problems club in San Francisco. Lynnette Shaw, director of Marin Alliance for Medical Marijuana, said Hayes grows for 1,400 patients who all have medical notes recommending the use of marijuana to alleviate the symptoms of their illnesses such as AIDS. Shaw told the board that task force officers are not heeding medical marijuana guidelines. She said all patients who have been visited by officers have been arrested, despite Proposition 215's mandate that users of marijuana for medicinal purposes should not be prosecuted. Supervisor Tim Smith said the board has gone on record advocating the use of medical marijuana and he is also frustrated that the state legislature has not come up with a cohesive plan to implement Proposition 215.
