Dozens of green-wearing, pot-smoking revellers partied outside Toronto's downtown police headquarters today, smoking their joints, bongs and pipes without being harassed by a single police officer. Streams of sweet smoke wafted through the air as cannabis crusader Marc Emery, a Vancouver resident, handed out joints to fellow pot enthusiasts and urged them to exercise "the lawful right to possess marijuana."
"Marijuana is legal in Ontario to possess and it is permissible under law to smoke marijuana anywhere it is permissible to smoke tobacco in Ontario," Emery said, calling the province the freest jurisdiction in the western world, with recent court challenges of pot laws and the acceptance of gay marriages. Although the event was right on police property, no uniformed officers were seen among the crowd. Inside headquarters, police seemed disinterested with the party and no officers were made available to comment. "I trust if the police wanted to apprehend our pot they could've done so," Emery said of the not-so-subtle challenge to police. "I thought the most provocative place to smoke marijuana with others would be right in front of (police Chief Julian Fantino's) doorstep." Police organizations in Ontario have said they will not lay charges for possession of marijuana under 30 grams until the country's muddled pot laws are clarified. The Ontario Court of Appeal ruled on June 10 that it would not overturn a precedent-setting Ontario Superior Court decision that cleared a teenager of marijuana possession charges. The Superior Court judge ruled there is no current ban on pot possession in Ontario since the federal government failed to comply with a July 2000 court order to create a new law dealing with the drug. The Liberal government hopes to have its new marijuana legislation passed by the end of the year. Under the proposed new laws, possession of up to 15 grams of pot - enough to roll about 15 to 20 joints - would be a minor offence that carries no criminal record. In the meantime, Emery said the province, and more specifically Toronto, might get an infusion of tourism from travellers wanting to smoke up without fear of a criminal record. "(Toronto) is the coolest place in the world to be right now, the most enlightened and the most advanced place to be," Emery said. "With SARS and all the related difficulties we've had in Ontario, this is the ideal (solution) to bring hundreds of thousands of tourists here, for the fine Canadian marijuana that circulates throughout Ontario. "Tell everybody around the world to come to Ontario; celebrate a unique freedom available only here in Ontario." Emery is recognized in the marijuana community as a leading activist in trying to get the drug legalized. He also runs the B.C. Marijuana Party, Cannabis Culture magazine, a store that sells marijuana seeds, and once ran for mayor of Vancouver. Alison Myrden, a government-licensed medicinal marijuana user, said she attended the rally not to party, but to thank Emery for his work that helped her get a legal exemption to smoke and treat her multiple sclerosis. "For me it's not a choice - it's a matter of quality of life because if I don't have marijuana then I can't get out of bed," she said. "I can't stop throwing up and I can't get out of a wheelchair." Bob Marley the prophet
Prophetic words in the lyrics of Bob Marley "Redemption Song" was a plaintive, almost Dylanesque acoustic spiritual song, devoid of any trance of reggae. When he sang it, he wore the expression of a playful child, but his voice bore the authority of a Biblical patriarch.A universal tune, another Bob Marley song that has become a standard, 'Redemption Song' is like a final statement in a career, a summation of all the themes and thought that had created it. "You've got to live out the book." An earnest acoustic version closes the Uprising album while a live version recorded at a show in Pittsburgh, Pennslyvania, on September 23, 1980 - the last concert Bob performed - appears on Songs of Freedom. "There was a feeling of a whole era coming to a climax. Everyone felt that he knew something was going to happen," says Rita Marley.Words by Bob MarleyOld pirates yes they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I from the
Bottom less pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the almighty
We forward in this generation triumphantly
All I ever had is songs of freedom
Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had redemption songs, redemption songsEmancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the bookWon't you help to sing, these songs of freedom

WE THE PEOPLE will make it so. We will honor our founding fathers and all the brave soldiers who died to protect these rights from "enemies, foreign and domestic."Press the governments, local, state, and federal to repeal cannabis prohibition. I think Cannabis Cafe's would really be popular. I have never talked to Marc Emery but only have followed all that has gone on the Internet since I first found Hemp BC years ago. He is very smart. He knows what to do and when to do it. I've always been impressed with his vision. We are lucky to have him.

Marc Talked about Cannabis Cafes for Toronto.
Some are already in the works. As long as they don't sell pot, they are not illegal in Toronto. Existing businesses will be retrofitted for the enjoyment of cannabis smokers. Since cannabis possession is not currently illegal in Ontario, cannabis smokers can smoke the sacred herb anywhere tobacco smoking is allowed. As Marc, says "We don't want to trample the rights of legitimate business owners." It's patio, picnic, and concert season, Ontario. Enjoy your freedom! Seize your rights, and don't let the government take them away.ego transcendence follows ego destruction, legal in North America for the first time in 66 years by the US cannabis prohibition clock, 80 years by the Canadian cannabis prohibition clock, and by the Mexican cannabis prohibition clock, who's got the stats?

We just lost a friend who was 50 to cancer so I guess I get to thinking how short life can be. We were able to help him before he died and that made us happy. We still have a lot of work to do! "Mandatory Marley"...you gotta love it!
The man was truly a prophet in his own country...and several others - namely in not being accorded the honor he was due while alive. I remember a Rolling Stones interview circa 1975 in which he warned about CIA drug running in the Caribbean Basin. And I still maintain his death from a very strange form of cancer was just a little too convenient...

The Land of the Actually Free
As a Franco-Ontarian, I have to say that life is pretty sweet. Though I could not be in Toronto physically, my baby and I were there in spirit, participating in the event from home. Here in Ottawa, we have a great public reminder of 420 every day. Every day at 4:20, a local radio station play 'Mandatory Marley', which is brought to us by a hydroponics store. I tell ya, it is good to live in the Land of the Actually Free. With all the music festivals in our area, it promises to be a very chillin' summer. Not that people did not smoke openly at concerts before. It's just that now, we can do it with complete peace of mind.Love and Peace,Doobinie

He tickled the crowd with his comments and dreams. Ontario, the most free cannabis area in the world, the businesses that were born today in the shared vision of a pot-friendly future for Toronto, Ontario, Canada, NAFTA.
