Eureka -- The Eureka Police Officer's Association has come out in support of efforts to recall Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos. Members of the association announced the decision at a press conference outside the county courthouse Tuesday. Curtis Honeycutt, vice president of the association, said the roughly 50-member association voted unanimously Monday in support of the recall. "As police officers in Eureka, our No. 1 priority is the safety of Eureka citizens," Honeycutt read from a prepared statement.
"We want our neighborhoods free of rapists, child molesters, drive-by shooters, thieves, drug dealers and all of the other dangerous elements of society. Unfortunately, we do not believe Paul Gallegos shares our concerns."In a brief written response, Gallegos rebutted those charges."For the last five months my office has aggressively prosecuted everything from domestic violence to elder abuse to drug dealing," he said. "I'm disappointed by the association's decision, but I remain committed to working with the law enforcement community to prosecute criminals and protect Humboldt County residents."The association's announcement comes on the heels of last week's news that the Humboldt Deputy Sheriff's Organization voted to support the recall. That organization maintained that Gallegos is soft on crime, and cited his perceived liberal stance toward medical marijuana users and reputed excessive plea bargaining.Honeycutt, a 10-year patrolman, said the association initially voted to support the recall about a month ago. But association members decided to hold off on going public with that vote and to meet with Gallegos to discuss their concerns. That meeting took place Thursday at Eureka Police Department headquarters. At the press conference Tuesday, Honeycutt and the three other officers also in attendance declined to discuss specifically what the association's problems are with Gallegos, or how he could have addressed them. The association includes police officers, evidence technicians, animal control officers, property clerks and police service officers in Eureka. Eureka Police Chief Dave Douglas is not a member of the association, and did not vote on the recall issue, nor did any other top administrators. Attempts to reach Douglas for comment Tuesday were unsuccessful.Despite the fact that the association backs the recall, Honeycutt said Eureka police remain committed to working with the district attorney."We will continue to prepare good cases and do our investigative work," Honeycutt said. "But we have a responsibility to let the citizens of Eureka know we have concerns with the district attorney."Source: Times-Standard (CA)Author: James Tressler, The Times-Standard Published: Wednesday, June 11, 2003Copyright: 2003 MediaNews Group, Inc.Contact: editor times-standard.comWebsite: http://www.times-standard.com/Related Articles & Web Site:Medicinal Cannabis Research Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/research.htmDA Fields Hard Questions from Eureka Group http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16593.shtmlPeace Officers' Group Backs DA Recall http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16509.shtmlD.A.
