Regarding Jessica R. Flaxman's article "A teacher asks, and asks again, "What's 420?'," Opinion Page, June 6: She may have asked but she got the wrong information.
The connotation of "420" circling about today has nothing to do with anything she "discovered" as to its meaning. The term, which has spread in use among pot smokers throughout America, originated here in California as the violation code for marijuana busts, not "drug" busts - there is a difference. It refers to the time of day when everyone gets "high" en masse, supposedly, as some sort of a protest to the government's bogus "war on drugs." It does not have anything to do with, as the column mentions, Adolf Hitler's birthday or any acts of terrorism past, present or future. As an educator, Flaxman went about finding out the wrong way! Jamming the kids and trying to coerce the info from them only led her to the inaccurate information she came up with. If she had only consulted some resources, like the magazine High Times, she would have found out the real connotation and wouldn't have come across as some interloping adult. Her students knew the truth and were most likely laughing at her ignorance.Donna C.
