Iqaluit, Nunavut - Ottawa's new marijuana law won't do much to change drug enforcement in the North. Possession of small amounts of pot will soon be punishable only by a fine. The federal government has introduced legislation that makes possession of small amounts of marijuana punishable only with a fine. Cpl. Ken Goodine of Nunavut's drug-enforcement unit says for his department it remains business as usual.
"I think the government is grappling with an issue that they're trying to deal with in the best way that they can," Goodine says."But I know we're not heading in a situation where it's going to become legalized to the point where people can just walk up and down the streets with drugs."The new law won't make possession legal. It means that someone caught in possession of 15 grams or less of marijuana would get a ticket and have to pay a fine, but would not have a criminal record. The federal government is also planning to spend million of dollars on anti-marijuana campaigns. The government warns the new legislation will have much stiffer penalties for growers and traffickers of marijuana.Big Picture: Marijuana: http://www.cbc.ca/news/indepth/marijuana/Cannabis Reform Bill: http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/english/media/releases/2003/2003_34bk2.htm Source: Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Published: Tuesday, May 27, 2003Copyright: 2003 CBCContact: letters cbc.ca Website: http://www.cbc.ca/Related Articles & Web Site:Cannabis News Canadian Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/can.htmPM Tables Relaxed Marijuana Lawhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16402.shtmlLiberals Move To Soften Drug Lawshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16401.shtmlPot Bill To Be Paired with Anti-Drug Initiative http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16396.shtml
