Researchers in the south of England are preparing to conduct trials to find out whether a cannabis extract can alleviate symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease.A team of doctors from the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth will give cannabis oil to a group of patients with Parkinson’s disease to assess its effect on dyskinesias – the common debilitating side effect of drug treatments that replace lost dopamine.
Dyskinesia has proved difficult to treat, yet the researchers are hoping to build on previous studies which have shown that compounds acting at cannabis receptor sites in the brain can significantly reduce the involuntary movements.Dr Camille Carroll – neurology registrar at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital and head of the trial – said, “No previous long-term trial into the effect of cannabis has been undertaken, but I am hopeful that we will see positive effects reducing the involuntary movements suffered by patients on anti-Parkinson’s disease drugs.”The team plans to recruit 24 patients across Devon and Cornwall to take part in the study. The researchers will compare the effect of cannabis oil on dyskinesia against a placebo. If cannabis oil is found to be effective, the team will press for cannabinoids to be given on prescription to patients with Parkinson’s disease.Source: Peninsular Medical SchoolSource: Health-News UKPublished: Thursday, April 24, 2003Copyright: HMG Worldwide 2003Contact: editorial health-media.net Website: http://www.health-news.co.uk/Related Articles & Web Site:Medical Marijuana Information Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/medical.htmCannabis May Become Aspirin of 21st Centuryhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread16007.shtmlCannabis Trial on Parkinson's Disease http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread15989.shtmlPot May Ease Parkinson's Symptoms-Czech Study http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14739.shtml

Dyskinesia
This is interesting: I've researched the usage of "neuroleptic" drugs and have found that they cause, in theraputic dose levels, a well known "side effect" called Tardive Dyskinesia (maybe my spelling is off). These drugs also cause the shrinkage of the frontal lobes, the seat of humanity (and the prevalent location of many CB1 receptor sites!), the same sought after "result" they used LOBOTOMIES to do- the loss of "excessive thoughts", or merely to cure the DELUSIONS caused by those mean spirited marijuana addicts (NOT). In rat studies, these NEUROLEPTICS caused an acceleration in loss of "giant" brain cells, which control gross movements. In other words, now it seems that they want to use marijuana to CORRECT many of the movement disorders which may just be the SIDE EFFECTS of taking drugs to stop marijuana side effects. WHY DON'T THEY JUST LET PEOPLE MAKE UP THEIR OWN MINDS ABOUT TREATMENT OPTIONS rather than MAKING PROBLEMS which we need marijuana to CURE LATER, eh?Just checking in from the road. PAUL PETERSON
