Hemp Backers Celebrate

A handful of mid-Michigan hemp enthusiasts Monday celebrated a court ruling that protects their right to sell hemp-based foods and products. Nearly a dozen people gathered outside the Drug Enforcement Administration offices in downtown Saginaw's Commerce Center along East Genesee to pass out fliers and hemp foods to passers-by, said Adrienne Csar, a Cass City hemp activist.
The DEA in March issued rules banning the sale of hemp foods and other products that use hemp oils, seeds or fibers, but the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco has issued a stay to keep the agency from enforcing the ban. "This could have been illegal," said Csar as she handed out a granola bar-like Gertrude & Bronner's Magic Alpsnack that included hemp nuts as well as almonds and fruits among its ingredients. The DEA office staff refused to accept the pre-packaged treats when offered by members of the group, Csar said. Detroit Field Division spokesman David Jacobson said activists camped out for similar "hemp picnics" outside several DEA branches, but would not comment on DEA policy or the implications of the court action on drug enforcement. "The DEA is abiding by the stay," he said, adding that the court had not set a date for a final ruling. Hemp cultivation in the United States is illegal because the seeds, leaves and flowers from the hemp plant, also known as cannabis sativa or marijuana, contain the psychoactive chemical compound THC, said Csar. However, the amount of THC in hemp grown for industrial uses is far lower, and hemp oil contains more essential fatty acids than vegetable or olive oil, Csar said. Hemp byproducts also are used to make paper, rope and plastics, she said. t Andy Grimm is a staff writer for The Saginaw News. Saginaw March?
Want a Saginaw March?
Organize it:Heres how--->Show up in Downtown Saginaw right at that DEA Office at 10am, make some signs, leave for flint at 11.See you Downtown, maybe go to Lansing at 12:30, and leave Lansing for Detroit at 4?Then Next Year, do a full march through the city
from 10:00-12, and Ill see you in Flint at 1Then Maybe Lansing at 2 and Detroit after 4.Its a good pattern to follow, a two year cycle of March Growth. We'd need: A Local press contact and local figure to honor
Local Bands....Anyhow, it applies to Bay City as well.If Detroit goes well, I wanna try Schwaginaw or BC

I'm from Saginaw and wish i could've been there to hand out these food goodies in downtown. The area is such a shadow of what it used to be and this attracted the dea like flies to s***. I'm glad they could bring a few smiles to the downtown.
