Eureka -- A scheduling error is being blamed for Humboldt County District Attorney Paul Gallegos' failure to show up at a meeting Monday with top area law enforcement officials to discuss his new medical pot prosecution guidelines.Gallegos was scheduled Monday to meet with Sheriff Gary Philp and at least a half-dozen chiefs from police departments around the county.
But the new district attorney, who pledged to reach out to law enforcement following his surprising victory over incumbent Terry Farmer last year, apparently was reaching in other directions Monday morning: He was ascending trees with a Pacific Lumber Co. climber.Gallegos offered no public apologies for his non-appearance, but some of the top cops he stood up stood up for him."I think he just forgot about it," Philp said, adding that he didn't feel slighted. "It's not like he's the only guy ever to miss a meeting.""It was uncomfortable, but not a deliberate thing," Interim Arcata Police Chief Randy Mendosa said. "We're going to give him the benefit of the doubt on missing the meeting."Gallegos, who last week filed a fraud lawsuit against Pacific Lumber Co., was climbing trees with a PL climber at the same time he was scheduled to meet with the law enforcement officials.Gallegos himself said he's apologizing to law enforcement, but also downplayed the significance of missing the meeting."There's nothing to read into this," Gallegos said. "It's not the first time I missed a meeting and it won't be the last."Gallegos' new medical marijuana guidelines seem to permit medical marijuana patients to grow and possess a lot more pot than was allowed under Farmer. Gallegos' policy dictates he'll allow legitimate patients to have up to 99 plants within a 100-square-foot canopy area, and up to 3 pounds of dried processed marijuana per year. Farmer allowed patients to have 10 plants. The new guidelines have sent a ripple of controversy among area law enforcement. Some, like Eureka Chief Dave Douglas and Fortuna Chief Kent Bradshaw, have opposed the new policy. Others, like Philp and Mendosa, have said they just want more clarity on issues such as whether patients can have the drug in their cars.Recently Gallegos himself indicated that he would keep talking with law enforcement, but also said he was moving ahead under the assumption that his new policy was in effect.Another meeting with law enforcement officials reportedly has been tentatively scheduled sometime in the next few weeks. referendom
I thought, according to the California constitution, referendoms could only be modified by a vote of the people. The fact that these men think they can make up their on rules and laws, illegally, shows just how far this unjust war has gone.
