Ed Rosenthal, 58, faces 10 years to life after a jury found him guilty of growing more than 1,000 plants.California passed a law permitting the sale of marijuana for medical purposes after a referendum in 1996 but this contradicted federal anti-narcotics legislation. In the past year Washington has ordered a crackdown on the practice. Drug Enforcement Agency officers have seized cannabis plants, medical records and legal documents from three sites in the state.Rosenthal, who has written books on how to grow marijuana and avoid the law, was the first case to reach court.To the anger of his supporters the judge ruled that his lawyers could not explain why the drug was being grown. Following the conviction five jurors have come forward and demanded a retrial after having learnt the reason for the drug's production."I'm sorry doesn't begin to cover it," one of the jurors, Marney Craig, a property manager, said at a press conference. "It's the most horrible mistake I've ever made in my entire life. And I don't think that I personally will ever recover from this."Rosenthal, who is still free on £140,000 bail pending sentencing, is expected to appeal.In a gesture of defiance of the federal government's new zero-tolerance policy a referendum was held in San Francisco last year on whether officials should be instructed to grow and distribute the drug. It passed by a 2-1 ratio.A three-member committee has subsequently been set up to explore how the city can most effectively move into the drug cultivation business. I feel I have become smarter. I don't see the world through rose colored glasses like I did for much of my life. I know I can't please everyone but we must be true to ourselves. That's hard but important for each of us to realize. I see big problems and maybe none of them will ever get fixed but trying is important. I see seriously dedicated people working hard to make a difference and those that think it is a big game and a form of entertainment. I see unity and I see division. I see hope and I see despair. The world could blow up while I'm typing this and that would be that. We must keep on going and working but we must also know that it might be out of our hands and that's when having some form of faith helps me. I hope it doesn't come to that but I believe this war will spread across the Middle East & then the entire world. A little over a year ago there was a poll of U.S. college students and over half said they would burn their draft cards if they were drafted. I can't even imagine what that number would be today! The kids know what's going on because they are on the internet. Bush knows he's lost our support and can only rule through force and coercion. He is not a leader, he is a ruler. We are headed for a big mess. We have a friend that is getting seriously worried that the draft will come back and his sons will get drafted. I think we are destined to this fate sometimes.
