Three men appeared in a Copenhagen court accused of cultivating over a thousand cannabis and specially bred marijuana plants known as "skunk weed," in three Copenhagen gardens. Police are putting the combined amount seized at potentially more than 210 kilos of marijuana when cultivated.
The court case comes after surveillance work by city drug squad detectives. The cultivation of skunk - a stronger variety of the cannabis plant – is regarded as a more serious offence than the cultivation of more traditional forms of marijuana, because it gives a greater financial reward. One man, a 30-year-old, is accused of acting as a cultivator in all three locations, while the other two accomplices are thought to have been partners in the production process. The defence is disputing the charges, claiming that the potential yield would have been much less than the amount described by the prosecution. The defence is also claiming that the skunk plants were of a much poorer quality than the prosecution claims. It has long been disputed in legal circles how many kilos of cannabis can be obtained from a given number of plants. Police figures vary, often not following a consistent pattern of the number of plants to the number of kilos to be yielded.Marijuana has been in the news recently after large-scale police raids on the so-called "free town" of Christiania, the squatter community where cannabis is sold openly.
