Saskatoon - Uncertainty over Canada's marijuana laws likely sparked a proposal to set up in Saskatoon a Dutch-style cafe where small amounts of marijuana can be consumed, says the city's mayor. Jim Maddin says the city's planning and zoning department has received a letter from a person interested in the idea if Canada's marijuana laws change. "I think what has prompted this is the recent discussion at the federal level with respect to cannabis possession and that sort of thing," Maddin said Wednesday.
"The letter contains reference to the fact that there are a great number of users of cannabis throughout Canada and certainly here in Saskatoon and a lot of these people have been sheltering that activity because of course it's a criminal offence." The details of the Saskatoon proposal are not known. In Holland, more than 800 licensed cannabis cafes have been set up where marijuana users can buy and smoke small amounts of pot. They are called coffeeshops - spelled as one word - and it's legal there to buy five grams of cannabis at a time, says Frommer's, a company that publishes travel guides and a Web site. Each coffeeshop has a menu listing the different types of cannabis it sells, Frommer's says. The coffeeshops are not allowed to sell alcohol, so they sell coffee, tea, and fruit juices, but no food. A federal committee has recommended decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Last week, Judge Douglas Phillips threw out charges against a 16-year-old teen in Windsor, Ont., after agreeing with a defence argument that there are no laws in Canada prohibiting the possession of 30 grams or less of marijuana. The federal government is appealing the decision. A Toronto lawyer said Tuesday he plans to ask a judge on Friday to toss out his client's pot-possession charge using Phillips's ruling. CEDRO is the Dutch website about drrrrruuugs
It has been a while since anyone mentioned the CEDRO website that tells the facts about the drug reality in Holland- http://www.cedro-uva.org/index.htmlThere are several pieces there on prohibition worth reading for anyone interested in knowing about prohibition. I recently read an article talking about Eurocannabis titled "The economics of cannabis-cultivation in Europe" by A.C.M. Jansen- http://www.cedro-uva.org/lib/jansen.economics.htmlThere was a coffeehouse that opened in town a few months ago that was about computers. I just wonder what happens when the computer coffeehouses and the cannabis coffeehouses merge.
