With the shout of the single word ‘Object’ a Government whip halted the progress of the bill to re-legalise medicinal cannabis. The bill will return to the Commons on Friday June 11th.
The whips informed the bill's promoter Paul Flynn that the “Government had not changed their mind on the bill”. Paul Flynn said “Again the Government are running away from debating this long overdue reform. Friday 21st may 1999 was another day of ignominy for parliamentary democracy. Sixteen private members bills were before the House. The first was clumsily filibustered for nearly four hours - even though it is non-controversial. Only one other bill was discussed. A farce of vote was called to kill it. Whips discouraged MPs from voting in order to declare the House non - quorate. The futility of the process was revealed when no MP voted ‘No’ in the division. The entire Friday session was a disgrace with the precious parliamentary time wasted by obedient backbenchers obeying the whips’ orders making futile speeches. The encouraging news is that a record number of MPs have signed the supporting Early Day Motion. On the 21st May, it is 95, including 13 Tories. Below is the completer list. All MPs should be contacted if they are not listed. Some cannot sign because of their status as ministers or frontbench spokes people.
