Montpelier, Vt. -- A panel of judges, police, prosecutors, medical professionals and others has found that marijuana has medical value as a drug that eases nausea, pain and other symptoms for people suffering from certain illnesses. The Legislature's Medical Marijuana Study Committee also agreed at its final meeting Thursday that the federal government had mistakenly classified marijuana as a drug that had no medical uses, in the same category as heroin and LSD.
The committee's consensus about marijuana as a potential medicine surprised many on the panel, given the group's diverse makeup. The committee included a judge, police chief, and representatives of state's attorneys and the attorney general, as well as doctors, patients and consumer representatives. ''The fact that everyone signed it, that takes courage,'' said Debbie Ramsdell of Charlotte, a longtime supporter of medical marijuana who was chairwoman of the committee. Referring to the law enforcement representatives, she said, ''I thought they stuck their necks out.'' The committee made recommendations about how the state might structure a medical marijuana program but offered lawmakers no advice about whether they should pass a law setting up such a program. Eight states permit marijuana to be used for medical purposes despite an overriding federal statute that makes it a felony to grow, possess or sell marijuana. The committee's report lists 13 findings, but some members agreed only to two the one asserting that marijuana has medical value and a second calling on the federal government to change the drug's designation. Among its other findings, the committee, suggested that the safest way to provide marijuana would be for the state or a nonprofit organization to cultivate and distribute it. The report notes, however, that federal drug agents have closed down medical marijuana-grower clubs. Allowing patients to grow marijuana on their own would be the next, best option, the report says. The Vermont House passed a bill last year that would have allowed individuals to grow a small number of plants for medical use. In one fell swoop...
Those judges, police, prosecutors, medical professionals and others have added credibility to their professions. This seems like a significant deal. The Federal urine suckers, are having their hands full. Cannada, Jamaica, and most of American citizens are against caging humans for using a plant. The Federal government is not through, however. Here We are at Christmas. It is unexceptable that there are people like Bush, Hutchinson, Ashcroft et al. that will celebrate His birth, while caging their brother for using a plant. At best, they are disobedient.I don't like that. The Green Collar Worker VERMONT

this article is important
It shows that the federal classification for cannabis is NOT WARRANTED! Reclassification is neccessary. Regulated growth and distribution is the best possible option for medical marijuana. Does anyone know how we can help get our government to reclassify marijuana? It obviously needs to be done. The real problem is LEGALLY what has to be done to get it reclassifed. On another note: Should reclassification include decriminalization as well??

Let Freedom Ring.
Don't forget where "freedom" began. WE THE PEOPLE were once only 13 colonies: Don't tred on me! There is far more significance to non-binding medical cannabis initiatives passing in Massachusetts, just across the border from Vermont, the 14th state, than meets the eye. 14th state, Montpelier, VT - The State of Vermont http://home.cfl.rr.com/samjoiner/city/Vermont.htmOfficial Motto: Freedom and unity ego destruction or ego transcendence, that is the question.Hats off to the courageous judges, police, prosecutors, medical professionals and others for speaking the truth, an old AMERICAN tradition.
