San Francisco could become the first city in the US to enter the business of cannabis growing after the passing of a proposition at this week's election. The measure, passed by the city's voters by a two to one majority, requires the city to explore the cultivation of cannabis for medical use. While medical cannabis initiatives have been passed in many states in the past decade, it would be the first time that a city council takes responsibility for growing the plant.
San Francisco's city supervisor (manager), Mark Leno, said the city would now "hold hearings and bring in professional expertise". But a spokesman for the mayor, Willie Brown, said the idea was "too wacky even for San Francisco". The federal drug enforcement administration has reacted angrily. "It's an illegal substance," a spokesman said. There have been a number of confrontations in California over medical cannabis in the past year, with voters supporting it and federal agents raiding those supplying it. In Nevada, an unsuccessful attempt ("the reeferendum") to legalise possession of up to three ounces of cannabis was supported by 40% of voters. http://www.roninpub.com/heamag.htmlThe Healing High: Feels good, promoting wellness. Relaxes you, restoring equilibrium. Makes you laugh, refreshing perspective. Stimulates appetite, encouraging eating. Uplifts mood, encouraging optimism. Inspires faith that will heal. The concept of healing is broad enough to encompass the notion of truly recreational activity. The original meaning of the word "recreation" after all, refers to transformation, or recreation, to "creating again". Truly recreational activity, then, is regenerative, life giving, transformative-in other words, healing. So when cannabis is used in a genuinely recreational capacity, such usage is a form of healing. And the well-directed medicinal use of cannabis is also healing-in other words, transformative, regenerative, or re-creative. The word "healing" thus points toward what both medicinal and recreational use of cannabis can be, at their very best. By focusing on the process of healing, then, this book bridges and unites the recreational and medicinal approaches to the use of cannabis. The notion of healing, referring to positive transformation on the level of spirit as well as body and mind, also encompasses the entheogenic-spiritual or religious-approach to the use of cannabis.
