Guinn Against Marijuana

Gov. Kenny Guinn came out against Nevada’s marijuana initiative Tuesday, saying voters are being duped into believing it would help people with cancer and other patients use the drug.Guinn’s stance on Question 9 matches that of gubernatorial candidate Joe Neal, but the Democratic state senator disagreed with him on the ballot’s marriage question.
Guinn also said he would vote for Question 2, barring same-sex marriages because he believes in “traditional family values.” Neal said he probably would not cast a vote on the question, although “for those who have that interest, I don’t have a problem with it.”On the marijuana initiative, Guinn said Nevada already has a medical marijuana law, passed during the 2001 Legislature, and that law needs to be given time to be successful.“We have someone from out of state that is coming in here saying this is for medicinal purposes,” Guinn said during his first news conference in Carson City since he underwent prostate cancer surgery last month.“All of you know that we passed a marijuana initiative for medical purposes, and we probably have 300-plus people who have been issued a card (for medicinal marijuana). So when I hear that on television, in this case, it is already there.”State law allows patients prescribed marijuana by a physician to grow their own and use it at home. Possession of up to an ounce now is a misdemeanor for adults. First-time offenders face a fine, and if the judge sees fit, drug treatment.Question 9 seeks to legalize possession of up to three ounces of marijuana by people over 21 and build a state system to produce and distribute the drug.It would not make it legal to sell marijuana to juveniles, smoke it in public or drive under the influence of the drug. Question 9, however, would fix a fundamental flaw in current law, allowing Nevada’s medicinal marijuana smokers to get the drug legally. Currently they must grow it, which is difficult, or buy it from street dealers.Guinn said the medical marijuana law must be given time to succeed before it is changed.“It is time for us to experience that law rather than jumping into a new law,” said Guinn, 66. He said he has never smoked marijuana. He also said the Question 9 marijuana initiative, like Nevada’s current marijuana laws, is at odds with federal laws against the drug.“And we have to warn everyone that we issue a card to that the federal government could come in and arrest them for growing what they have a card to grow as part of a state ordinance,” Guinn said.Neal, D-Las Vegas, also said he has never smoked marijuana. He said he opposes Question 9 because the relaxed law could lead people to harder drugs.“It is shown to be a drug that leads to mainline stuff,” Neal, 72, said. “We already have a law on the books that deals with medicinal marijuana, and if that needs to be made stronger, we should do that.”The leader of the group pushing the marijuana initiative said he respects Guinn’s views but defended the statewide ad campaign funded by his group, Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement, and its parent organization, the Marijuana Policy Project of Washington, D.C.“We have great respect for Gov. Guinn and can appreciate his reasoning for voting against Question 9,” said Billy Rogers, the campaign manager for Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement. “But under the current Nevada law, medical marijuana patients are forced to go into the criminal marketplace and get their medication from drug dealers. Even if you grow it, where do you get the seeds from? The drug dealers.“Question 9 would fix that problem by requiring the state (to) license and regulate the sale of marijuana at low cost to seriously ill people.”Note: Non Question 9 Issues Snipped.Source: Associated Press Published: October 22, 2002Copyright: 2002 Associated Press Related Articles & Web Sites:NRLEhttp://www.nrle.org/Marijuana Policy Projecthttp://www.mpp.org/Propriety of News Release Questionedhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14529.shtmlNevada Pushes Next Frontier: Legalizing Pot http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14503.shtmlPondering The Ballot Questionshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14491.shtml

Gubernatorial candidate Joe Neal is 72!
Which means he was about 7 years old when the Feds decided to make a green plant the nation's boogeyman. It is said that if you repeat a lie often enough, it becomes the truth in people's perception. Neal has been consuming a steady diet of lies with respect to cannabis for over half a century. Guess what? They took.“It is shown to be a drug that leads to mainline stuff,” Neal, 72, said. Heads-up Mr. Neal! I've got a newsflash for you that you can probably well appreciate. Want to know what really leads to the hard stuff? OLD AGE.The arteries get harder. Thinking becomes ossified. It becomes harder to pee and harder to see.It is harder to have an open mind and very hard to try new things...you know...something about old dogs and new tricks."Neal, D-Las Vegas, also said he has never smoked marijuana. He said he opposes Question 9 because the relaxed law could lead people to harder drugs."The times are hard Mr. Neal. At 72, they are likely to get harder. It is time for some new blood in Nevada politics.

If this thing does NOT pass in Nevada,,then it will verify my theory of vote rigging on a federal level...SWAMPIE..you're the BEST!....

New Argument??
©Oct. 24, 2002 1205AM CST USA by Dankhank yahoo.com
Is this a new argument, and old debunked one, or old situation forgotten that has a potential bearing on the "states rights" issue? For how many years was gambling ONLY legal in Nevada? The federal government seemed to keep hands-off with regards to Nevada allowing gambling while it was illegal in the rest of the USA and at the federal level. For how many years has prostitution ONLY been legal in Nevada? The federal government seems to keep hands-off with regards to Nevada allowing prostitution while it is illegal in the rest of the USA and at the federal level. Why is consumption of Cannabis any different to these activites with regard to being allowed in Nevada, or any other state for that matter, while being illegal at the federal level?Where have the lawyers been on this argument? Did I miss something? An inquiring mind wishes to know ....Gov. Kenny Guinn are you listening, or reading???

I don't know hoser, I'm not Canadian. But I've spent a lot of time in the Great White North. Can't decide which side of the medicine line I want to stay on. Hope I will always be able to travel back and forth like I have my whole life. I had a Canadian once tell me "We're all Americans, some just live further north than others".

Somebody Got to This Guy
He was trying so hard to stay out of the fray, previously. His arguments are unconvincing. Somebody got to this guy.God forbid he would have complications of cancer that would necessitate he take marijuana himself.

I should try setting it at 50. I will. I don't know how they pay for google since it isn't loaded with ad banners. I hope they keep up the good work. Their beta news search is getting good. I bet it will be even better when it's out of beta testing. When I need copyright info I can type in the name of the paper on the search of Cannabis News and get an article with say the Chicago Tribune and it makes looking for copyright info much faster. It really is good. I can type in a persons name and find something usually too.

Yes I don't use anything else now. You know I set preferances at 50 sites per page so I don't have to change pages so often. The Canada search isn't perfect but the returns tend to be from Canadian sites or Canadian related. Except the BETA news search, as far as I can tell it's identical to regular Google.
