TEL AVIVIsrael's new pro-cannabis Green Leaf Party, by making a startlingly good showing in its bid for a formal slot in the national Knesset parliament on May 17, has succeeded in turning the stuff of conventional Israeli politics on its head.
Garnering about 30,000 votes out of 3.7 million total ballots cast throughout Israel, Ale-Yarok--"Green Leaf" in Hebrew--fell barely 20,000 votes short of the threshold needed to gain a regular mandate in the Knesset. This was a much better performance than most of the 30 other political parties fielded in last Monday's historic national elections."With this showing, we've clearly established ourselves as a powerful, growing grass-roots movement," Green Leaf chairman and founder Boaz Wachtel says.Green Leaf calls for the legalization of cannabis for medicinal, industrial, agricultural and environmental purposes, for the legal distinction between "soft" and "hard" drugs, and for an end to the "social stigma" attached to use of pot and hashish. The party's anti-establishment ethos was not hard for voters to spot in the race: Its much-televised campaign commercials transformed Israel's somber national anthem, "Hatikva," into a psychedelic trance-music re-mix, and were trademarked by Ale-Yarok's ideological icon: an Israeli flag with a pot leaf in the center instead of the Star of David.Click the above link to read the whole article!
