The nation's drug czar says Nevada's ballot issue to legalize possession of marijuana is ludicrous, and its supporters are relying on distortions in their campaign and voter naivete to succeed in November."This is a con and it's insulting to the voters of the state in which it is presented," John P. Walters said Friday during a gathering of reporters and law enforcement officials.
"We have a momentous decision in this state. We saw the problem that marijuana was massively underestimated in the public mind and if we didn't do anything it would grow," he said. "That's why I came."Of a number of marijuana ballot issues in the country, Nevada's is the most liberal. It would allow adults to possess up to 3 ounces of pot which could be sold _ and taxed _ in state-licensed smoke shops."This is the most extreme ballot issue they've done so far," he said. Gesturing to three ounces of marijuana in three sandwich-sized bags, he added, "That's enough to make 250 cigarettes. That's not personal use."Walters, chief of the office of National Drug Control Policy, called wealthy backers of Nevada's Question 9" misguided people who have a lot of money and decided to make this state a guinea pig."Referring to a pro-marijuana television ad featuring a retired Las Vegas police officer, he told reporters, "You probably know some goofballs in journalism, too."Question 9 would have to pass twice _ in November and again in 2004 _ to change the Nevada Constitution.Whether it could ever take effect is unclear since federal law bans marijuana possession, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last year that states can't make exceptions for medical use.During an appearance Thursday in Las Vegas _ Walters'second there in three months _ Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani accused the federal government of getting involved in a state issue.Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas, a paid consultant for the group backing the measure, challenged Walters to a debate. Walters said in Reno he would debate the backers, but not their lobbyists."The drug czar doesn't seem to understand that in the privacy of a home or under the care of a doctor, we have the right to use marijuana," Giunchigliani said. But in Reno, Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick said approval of Question 9 would effectively kill Nevada's drunken driving laws because it would require that a person who had been smoking marijuana to be driving dangerously while under the influence."Does this mean I can be sitting here at work and toke up, then get into my car and as long as I don't drive dangerously, I can go on down the road under the influence?" he asked. "Just so I don't injure or kill someone, I guess."Complete Title: Drug Czar: Naivete Aids Backers of Nevada Marijuana InitiativeOn the Net:Office of National Drug Control Policy Web site: http://www.whitehousedrugpolicy.govSource: Associated Press Author: Tom Gardner, Associated Press WriterPublished: Friday, October 11, 2002Copyright: 2002 Associated Press Related Articles & Web Sites:NRLEhttp://www.nrle.org/Marijuana Policy Projecthttp://www.mpp.org/Question 9 Backers Speak Outhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14431.shtmlDrug Czar's Visit Prompts Rallies http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14425.shtmlDrug Czar Says State Faces Liabilityhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14418.shtml

Antis don't know what they talking about
It seems to me that, from their public statements, not one of these Drug Warriors has the least bit of first hand knowledge of their subject. They don't know what they are talking about. Their comments all seem to originate from a 1937 anti marijuana phamplet. They only things they don't mention, and this is due to Political Correctness, are the racial and sexual angles that always used to be brought up.

"That's enough to make 250 cigarettes.
That's not personal use." I wonder how much liquor the guy has in his home "wet-bar" ?? They can't figure maybe we would like to have ,say, an ounce of Orange Bud ,an oz. of Kali Mist, some Blueberry might be nice ( tho I tend to go "sleepy " from Indica -heavy varieties ). Can someone please explain to these people the "Finer-points" of different weed types?? (tho this lout probably just goes through 2 cases of "Bud" over the weekend)!and if Jay Pee Walter's thinks people are going to fall for this "child psychology" stuff like, "We think the voters are smarter than that ",Then he must not have a whole lotta respect for them.(tho that's a "given") I just hope Sperling, or one of the other "billionaire-legalizers",takes him up on the debate offer. (maybe they're afraid he'll make a "citizen's arrest" for "inciting conspiracy" ,or something! I wouldn't put it past the little weasel!)

personal use?
So, John, you think 250 cigarettes is a ridiculously large quanity for personal use. Ever looked in a carton of Marlboros? Those are proven to do absolutely nothing but get you hooked on nicotine and give you cancer, but nobody goes to jail for using them to ruin their lungs and their lives. If I felt like it, I could go buy 200 cigarettes, all in a single convenient package! Hell, I could buy 5 cartons, or 10, or 100! You're going to have to try harder than that.

Money Needed
JR Bob Dobbs, thank you. That was well put, a small price for freedom. Any other takers? To the ones who sit back and let the rest of the world do your work, GET OFF YOUR WALLET and do something.

Donations
I sent my $20 to NRLE yesterday, voluntarily, and convinced my roommate to match that amount. A small price to pay for FREEDOM... especially since I get the feeling Walters' vacation is partially financed by MY contributions of April 15th, which are NOT voluntary.

Let it grow, Let it grow, greatly yield
His most dumbness the czar said,--"We have a momentous decision in this state. We saw the problem that marijuana was massively underestimated in the public mind and if we didn't do anything it would grow"-- Weather Report Suite Part II: Let It Grow Morning comes, she follows the path to the river shore...
Lightly sung, her song is the latch on the morning's door...
See the sun sparkle in the reeds; silver beads pass into the seaShe comes from a town where they call her the woodcutter's daughter...
She's brown as the bank where she kneels down to gather her water...
And she bears it away with a love that the river has taught her...
Let it flow, greatly flow, wide and clear...Round and round, the cut of the plow in the furrowed field...
Seasons round, the bushels of corn and the barley meal...
Broken ground, open and beckoning to the spring; black dirt live again...The plowman is broad as the back of the land he is sowing...
As he dances the circular track of the plow ever knowing...
That the work of his day measures more than the planting and growing...
Let it grow, let it grow, greatly yield...
(Chorus)
What shall we say, shall we call it by a name?...
As well to count the angels dancing on a pin...
Water bright as the sky from which it came...
And the name is on the earth that takes it in...
We will not speak but stand inside the rain...
And listen to the thunder shout
I am!, I am!, I am!, I am!So it goes, we make what we made since the world began...
Nothing more, the love of the women, work of men...
Seasons round, creatures great and small, up and down, as we rise and fall...
[chorus]Lyrics: John BarlowMusic: Bob Weir w/the Grateful Dead

Yes, I now know one certified journalism goofball
Namely, Tom Gardner!Mr. Gardner must have been sleeping in his journalism classes when they were telling him that non-editorial reporting is supposed to be completely objective. This story is so slanted in favor of the antis it would make sane journalists gasp. I counted 7 anti soundbites in there, versus 1 from a Q9 supporter. It's time for these do-goody-good journalists to get out of the back pocket of the antis, and start reporting the news like it's supposed to be.I took one high school journalism class, and I guarantee I could write a better news story than this guy. How can someone like Mr. Gardner get into the AP? Maybe it's because AP is run by a bunch of Hearst wannabees?

The voters are not naive.
This article is so off the mark for so many reasons. Other articles by these folks have said weed make you crazy, lazy, stupid, sickly, and prone to commit violent crimes. Now this one says that the voters are stupid, and that driving while high is bad because there is no test for intoxication and well, people don't drive all that badly either and cops can't tell. And they are still trying to scare people with 3 ozs. Would the antis be happy with 2 ozs.?
Maybe the voters don't believe this propaganda and will vote their own minds for freedom, and justice and these "nattering nabobs" will go away.

Extreme my assa.
"This is the most extreme ballot issue they've done so far," he said. Gesturing to three ounces of marijuana in three sandwich-sized bags, he added, "That's enough to make 250 cigarettes. That's not personal use."During the hey day of my NICOTINE addiction I was up to 3 packs of cigarettes a day!!! That equals 210 cigarettes a week! Sure that IS personal use!!! Also my habit would have killed me DEAD had I not stopped but it would also have saved the gubment thousands in social security money. Since cigarette taxes fill the gubment coffers and aka John Walter's pay check he will continue to tax Tobacco and kill 400,000 people a year legally while at the same time arrest you and steal your property for growing your own GREEN cigarettes all in the name of SAVING our CHILDREN. Bullocks I say. Our gubment is the 21st Century Taliban Regime hands down!

Bizarre czar quiz of the day:
Who is the czar talking about? --Referring to a pro-marijuana television ad featuring a retired Las Vegas police officer, he told reporters, "You probably know some goofballs in journalism, too."--Answer: none other than Andy Anderson former president of Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs (NCOPS) Largest police org. in NevadaSee him and Nevada Assemblywoman Chris Giunchiliani on the newest NRLE TV ad
http://www.nrle.org/commercials.htmlThis ad is very, very good it's the "We Are Nevada" ad. Unfortunatly you need WidowsMedia and it takes about five minutes if your on dial-up but excellent quality and very good prodution. Two thumbs up!

Add another one to the Say What? File...
"Does this mean I can be sitting here at work and toke up, then get into my car and as long as I don't drive dangerously, I can go on down the road under the influence?" he asked. "Just so I don't injure or kill someone, I guess."Just replace "toke" with "drink" and the question answers itself. Man, these people are weirdos. Has anyone checked their necks for circuitry or neck bolts?
