Question 9 Backers Speak Out

Source: Las Vegas Sun
Sign-waving supporters of Question 9 gathered Thursday outside a local television studio to confront the nation's drug czar, who was in Las Vegas to campaign against the ballot initiative that would decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.John Walters, chief of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, slipped out a back door at KLAS Channel, near the Strip and Desert Inn Road, but the several dozen pot supporters took it in stride.
"We're not really protesting," Ralph Smith, 23, said. "We're supporting a logical debate on the issue."Holding signs that said, "Go back to Washington DC!" and "Vote yes on Question 9!" and "Stop making sick people go to drug dealers 4 medicine," the group shouted: "Stop the crime! Yes on 9!"Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas, who was behind the passage of the state's medical marijuana legislation, came out of the building and told the group that she tried to get Walters to debate her, but he declined."I didn't know I was that great of a debater," she said. "I'll take that as a compliment."She told the group, "We're trying to say in the privacy of your home, you shouldn't be under the threat of arrest. If they care so much about the safety of Nevadans, then why did the federal government dump the (Yucca Mountain nuclear) dump on us?"The group cheered, and Giunchigliani hugged a woman holding a sign.April Huneycutt, 24, of Las Vegas, brought her pug puppy Magic to the demonstration. Magic was wearing a little sweater with a pro-Question 9 button on it."I believe police officers shouldn't waste their time with nonviolent crimes. I think it has a great chance of passing," she said, adding that Magic is the unofficial Question 9 campaign dog.A few Metro Police officers on bikes and U.S. marshals kept an eye on the protest, but the pro-pot people remained peaceful.Note: Drug czar avoids vocal protesters.Source: Las Vegas Sun (NV)Author: Jen Lawson Published: October 11, 2002Copyright: 2002 Las Vegas Sun, Inc.Contact: letters lasvegassun.comWebsite: http://www.lasvegassun.com/Related Articles & Web Sites:NRLEhttp://www.nrle.org/Marijuana Policy Projecthttp://www.mpp.org/Drug Czar's Visit Prompts Rallies http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14425.shtmlDrug Czar Says State Faces Liabilityhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14418.shtml

p4me and everyone
I sure don't mind mentioning articles at all. I just hesitate to post some of the articles that seem more political then about Cannabis. Here's a short article about the debate.Gov. Debate Set For Sunday
Jordan RauOctober 12, 2002The first debate between an incumbent New York governor and his challengers in well over a decade is scheduled to take place Sunday on WABC-TV.Invited to participate in the debate are not only Republican Gov. George Pataki and his Democratic challenger, State Comptroller H. Carl McCall, but also five third-party candidates. One, Independence candidate Tom Golisano, is well known from the more than $30 million in advertising he has bought. The others are: Gerard Cronin, the Right-to-Life candidate; Stanley Aronowitz, the Green candidate; Thomas Leighton, the Marijuana Reform Party candidate; and Scott Jeffrey, the Libertarian candidate. The 90-minute debate, sponsored by ABC and the Daily News, airs at 11 a.m. Sunday. FoM, What does the NYTimes say that's important?
FoM, I did not mention the article so much because of the debate. The tone of the article seemed to indicate that whoever had the most votes would be the next governor of New York. Out of eight candidates it would mean a small minority could win. But more importantly it makes the process of having more candidates defeat themselves against the two party system. The problem relative to the situation is how to break the lock on power that the two parties have. In the 2000 election both parties agreed that the WOSD would not even be a campaign issue and they made the rules that kept Ralph Nader out of the debates. A third party has to break through somehow even if they have to hold a unifying convention to pick a candidate to run against the two parties that love the Fascist Way. I am going to call the Elections Office Monday and see how it works in North Carolina.Take North Carolina where Elizabeth Dole is running primarily against Democrat Bowles. If there is a runoff then voting for the Libertarian would not be taking my vote away from Bowles if Dole does not get a majority. There would be a run-off but at least the parties would see voters had reservations about the two candidates. If a majority is not needed, then the logical thing to me seems to vote Democratic as resistance to a Republican controlled Senate, House, and President. It just looks like the two party system wants it the way it is forever and are closing the paths for a third, much less a fourth party to get through. In Mayan's link that I repeated, the author says this is the most critical election in history. If the Republicans can get control of both houses of Congress, we will be flooded with confirmations for judges in the Ashcroft tradition that will affect us for a long, long time. We will see the rich get their permanent tax cut and no telling what else that the rich and powerful want. This election is a big event in the history of the country. If things were just a little disagreement over budgetary priorities it would not be a big deal. The American people have got to show both parties we get what is going on and we want change. But the one thing that has to happen is that it takes a majority to get elected to office and any system that subverts that simple principle has to be altered. The two party system will no longer work when the rich control both.DAD-D,1,2

I just saw the article on the NYTs too. I don't know what to do with articles that are mostly political but mention marijuana or drug policy issues. We have so much news going on that centers on marijuana to keep me busy. Is this the way I should think? I'm not political by nature and it's hard for me to get all fired up about who is running for office.

NY Times mentions Marijuana Party,barely
I would like to repeat a link that Mayan put up asking for people to vote and to beat back the Republican tide. This article said one thing that I had believed all along. The great hero of the past two years is Senator Jeffers that quit the Republican Party and became Independent. There is no doubt in my mind that he did the country and world ten times what the Times Man of the Year ever did in a lifetime. http://www.truthout.org/docs_02/10.12D.bw.crank.htmThe NY Times search for the word, marijuana, yielded one result. It is because on Sunday in New York the candidates for governor, including Pataki, will have a 90 minute debate on Channel 7 at 11AM. From what I can tell there are going to be 8 parties represented. But my question is this: how can we let the political situation continue where the winner does not have a majority of the votes. I sure hope I am wrong in that if a majority is not won there will be a runoff for the office of Governor. Theoretically a candidate could get only 13% of the vote and get elected if there is not a run-off. It just seems that when the final election is held a majority must have selected the winner. If it doesn't work that way, then Brazil and Colombia are even ahead of us on the idea of majority rule. How is a third party ever going to break through.DAD-D,1,2

I hope Las Vegas TV stations & papers give wall to wall coverage of this highly humorous event!A possible headline:-------------------------
"NO COMMENT!"Naivete, lack of debating prowess and fear of facing the truth spark Drug Czar's hasty cellar-door retreat from anti-Question 9 appearance
-------------------------Nevada should invite the WartHog back for another appearance! And while they are at it, invite Assa, Asscroft and King Shrub! We need more pathetic events like this to bolster the cause and help the Sheeple realize what a group of cowardly losers the antis are.

I'm not at all surprised that Walters chickened out & sneaked out the back door. What could he possibly say to an enlightened group of individuals who know the difference between truth & propaganda? He would've been laughed back into his limo! And a debate? BWAAHAHAHAAA!!! Give me a break! Walters just might be our greatest ally. Please Help keep CannabisNews going!
One of the largest and most popular websites, requiring a fair amount of technical support, DrugSense hosts among the 86 some we help is this site, CNEWS.But covering the costs in these hard economic times, with so many worthy causes asking for donations, is proving very hard. Below is an article from this week's DrugSense weekly with a few facts. Please consider doing what you can to help. Thank you!--------My Top Ten DrugSense StatisticsBy Stephen YoungThe DrugSense staff has been struggling with a couple issues recently. The main issue is funding. We are concerned about the stability of our regular sources of income and hope to secure more funds directly from users of DrugSense services - see http://www.drugsense.org/donate.htm if you're ready to help without reading any further. But we can certainly understand if you want more details. DrugSense provides a number of services on a limited budget. So many services, in fact, it's difficult to describe them all in a concise manner. This is the other issue with which we've struggled: How do you communicate all the important things this organization does and its financial situation without overwhelming the typical DrugSense user in an avalanche of details? So here is an attempt to tell the story with ten numbers culled from dozens of other statistics we have explored during our struggle.1) 90,678 - That's the number of news articles about drugs and drug policy archived by the Media Awareness Project of DrugSense - see www.mapinc.org/drugnews2) 11,048 - The number of published letters archived by MAP from 1996 to the present. Those are all letters that have helped spread the reform message to media consumers around the world - see http://www.mapinc.org/lte/3) $11,036,952 - Estimated ad value of those published letters - roughly what it would have cost to buy advertising space equal to the amount of space taken by the published letters - see http://www.mapinc.org/lte/value.htm4) At least 86 - Minimum number of drug policy reform organizations that have received Web and technical support from DrugSense (we've helped so many groups we can barely keep track!) - see http://www.drugsense.org/sitemap.htm5) 271 - Issues of DrugSense Weekly published over the years - see http://www.drugsense.org/nl/2002/6) Uncounted thousands - Volunteers who have been moved by MAP and who have helped our success by serving as news editors, letter writers and newshawks -see http://www.mapinc.org/how2.htm7) 750 - People have ever given financial support to DrugSense - see http://www.drugsense.org/donate.htm8) 1.4 million - Individuals who visit the MAP web site per year. See http://www.drugsense.org/statistics/analog/mapinc/jun01jun02/9) 1,399,250 - Discrepancy between the number of people who use MAP's website in a year and those who have ever given to DrugSense/MAP.10) $210,000 - The annual DrugSense budget.By looking at these selected numbers, readers should be able to sense the value of the services we offer far outweigh our expenditures. However, some of our already stretched funding is in jeopardy. There could be one simple solution. In order for us to be almost completely user-supported, we simply need donations of fifteen cents per year from every MAP website visitor.OK, perhaps, it's unrealistic to expect this to happen. So we urge whoever can afford more than a 15 pennies to give what they can to cover the slackers. Donations of $100 or more entitle the giver to some exceptional premiums, including signed, inscribed copies of "Maximizing Harm," my favorite book about the drug war. (Disclosure: I wrote it.)Seriously, if you've contributed to or volunteered with DrugSense or MAP in the past, we greatly appreciate it, and we hope we can count on your continued support. If you haven't, we hope you can come through with a contribution now - see http://www.drugsense.org/donate.htmWhatever numbers you choose to look at, DrugSense and MAP offer a remarkable value. Please help us to continue providing these priceless services.Stephen Young is an editor with DrugSense and a shameless self-promoter.

I am so glad people in Nevada are out showing the "drug czar" what they think of his failed policies. It says a lot too that he won't even try to defend these policies either.

Dankhank , got me started
I was going to call it a day until Dankhank brought up the Messiah Disk. I really do not want to trouble you for a disk because I am not in a position to use it to a good end. But I do think the printed index is of use in any debate and even more valuable if it has links to pages on the web.It seems that Wee Wee Walters, oh another BS original, has found the folly of any public debate a bad idea that will never happen. Now I dwell on corporate power and a corrupted press, but I am still amazed at how the artist from all the fields have not plowed in such fertile ground as the marijuana injustice provides. I have used the phrase "Show me the movie" several times in the distant past. But besides movies, the world we live in now let's children learn to do animations with not so expensive software, or for that matter anyone can use the software for animations. Is the day coming when NORML, the Drug Policy Alliance, Peter Lewis, Soros, or anybody puts up a prize for a 30 or 60 second animation depicting the insanity of marijuana prohibition? When will Reason respond to lies? After the election what do we do for two more years- shout at the stone wall?I think of an animated speech with Wee Wee Walters spouting the same ol' same ol' to a chosen group of medicated seniors and when the audience is depicted their heads are suckers like in the old cartoon. And another thing about art is you can have characters say what you want said. For example someone without a sucker head could call for the Liar Walters to resign. Personally I would want someone to ask how much do you get paid to lie.I am looking foward to the animations that come out from the webmasters and techies, because after the elections that is about all we will have.Another thing about Walter's withdrawal from the debate platform is that it opens up the need for a play depicting Red-Nose Walters against a perfect performance. I think today on Oprah they were having a show about child geniuses with a guest that was on several years ago, that really is a remarkable guy. If I were to write a play, I would stage Walters against a character that is a 15 year old prodigy and have the child slay the old beast. There needs to be a staged debate go on tour.Sorry for rambling, but I just don't see how we have let the prohibition last for 7 years after the Netscape browser became popular. I feel about like Jack Herer when he spoke that he and his partner would not be silent for reform until they turned 84, hemp became legal, or they died. Myself, I would just like a few recruits to take my place as a mouthpiece for reform, so that my most strenuous task would be Voting Against All Incumbents until relegalization or until their was a Green, Progressive, Independent, or Libertarian that was the Incumbent.Good luck to all in converting a prohibitionist today and soon we will Free Cannabis For Everyone.DAD-D,1,2

Gutless Coward
Couldn't even stand to walk by the protesters. I wonder if somewhere deep in his mind, the remnants of John Walters' conscience and sense of decency can't handle looking the victims of his corruption and harmful policies in the eye?

Slither outta here, Czark
> John Walters, chief of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, slipped out a back door Excellent! If the only effect a protest has is to force weasels like Walters to squirm and slink around like the slithering vermin that he is, then that's plenty enough effect for me!

Where's a hammer and nails when you need them?
To nail one of Johnny Pee's feet to the floor and face the very people he's been hurting and make him respond to them.I didn't know he had 'slipped out' the back door. But then, why should he have been scared? What's he got to fear?Maybe 70-80 million Americans, perhaps? As par for the course, no 'anti' mouthpiece of any real importance has DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY.That's right. They usually do a *seperate* interview with whoever they are posing for, then bug out as soon as possible. They NEVER hang around to face unscripted questions. They NEVER stay to face the next person being interviewed, who is usually a reformer. NEVER.They may have all the power, but for such powerful people, they've shown themselves to be abject COWARDS!

NORML party this weekend!
Dear Friend:We are writing to invite you to a benefit party for NORML to be held at
the SomArts Gallery in downtown San Francisco on the evening of
Saturday,
October 12, 2002.This will be the fourth annual party we have held in the Bay Area, and
in
order to accommodate more attendees, we have moved this year’s party to
downtown San Francisco. San Francisco District Attorney Terence
Hallinan
will serve as co-host of the party, along with our good friend Marsha
Rosenbaum, Ph.D., the director of the west coast office of the Drug
Policy
Alliance. As you will see, the host committee for this event is a
virtual
“who’s who” of the movers and shakers in the marijuana law reform
movement
in California. We’ll provide great food and drink, some exceptional entertainment, and
the opportunity to spend an evening in a relaxed setting with friends
and
colleagues who share your opposition to criminalizing responsible
marijuana smokers. San Francisco’s own Extra Action Marching Band will
perform a unique musical extravaganza guranteed to have everyone
dancing.
We will also offer some marijuana-related art to be sold at a silent
auction. Please join us for this event, and help us continue the momentum for
positive change in California and across the country. This is an
opportunity to show your support for ending marijuana prohibition, and
to
help replenish NORML’s lobbying fund. This is an exciting time for those of us who favor legalization. Much
of
the rest of the industrialized world is starting to dismantle their
marijuana prohibition laws, and it is only a matter of time before our
elected officials will be forced to do the same. I hope you can join us
in
San Francisco to spend an evening with many of the citizen-activists
who
are working to make that happen.A portion of the proceeds from this event will be used to fund NORML’s
program in California. Registrants will receive a confirmation letter
or
e-mail. Walk-in's are also welcome.I hope to see you there.Regards,R. Keith Stroup
Executive Director

The coward czar sneaks out back door
You gotta love this kind of reporting. The czar is down to "drive by" propaganda. Nevadans can be proud they stand up to this coward. Yes on 9! Freedom for Americans Now! End the War! Give Peace a Chance!
