BERKELEY, Calif. A national survey shows the University of California, Berkeley and San Jose State University reported more drug arrests in 1997 than any other colleges in the country.
Cal led the nation for the second year in a row with 179 reported drug arrests, followed by San Jose State with 162. Cal was third in the country for alcohol-related arrests. The annual survey, released Sunday by the Chronicle of Higher Education, is based on crime statistics that campuses are required by federal law to disclose each year. The survey reviewed crime reports at 483 four-year colleges and universities. It found that arrests on campus are up 7.2 percent for drugs and 3.6 percent for alcohol. Do these numbers mean anything?
Do these universities have more drug and alcohol use, or are the bigger numbers due to their bigger student population? IMHO these numbers are meaningless without showing the PER CAPITA arrest statistics. If the per capita numbers are high, is it due to increased usage or increased enforcement?Lies, damn lies, and statistics...-- Doctor Dave
