Pot Initiative Leader Challenges Drug Czar

The leader of Nevada's ballot initiative to legalize marijuana challenged the nation's drug czar to a debate Wednesday, and even offered to pay for a plane ticket for John Walters, the director of the White House's Office of National Drug Control Policy.Billy Rogers, spokesman for Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement, said Wednesday he was dismayed to learn Walters' trip to Las Vegas would be paid for with taxpayer dollars. Rogers offered to front Walters the cost of a round-trip airline ticket, provided it was an economy class seat.
"It's outrageous that a federal official would spend public funds to come here and tell citizens how to vote," Rogers said. "Walters is coming to the wrong state. Nevadans don't look kindly on government types telling them how to live their lives."Walters is planning to visit Nevada Oct. 10, and will likely talk with law enforcement officials and visit treatment centers, said spokeswoman Jennifer de Vallance.Walters' itinerary is being planned now, and Rogers was welcome to send a formal invitation to a debate with possible times, locations and formats, de Vallance said."We would certainly take a look at it," de Vallance said.As for the offer of a plane ticket, it's against federal regulations for employees to accept gifts worth more than $20, de Vallance said. Additionally, Walters' visit is part of a West Coast tour that includes other states besides Nevada, his spokeswoman said."For legal and safety reasons, we prefer to handle our own transportation," de Vallance said.Walters visited Nevada this summer to speak out against the ballot initiative. His office has also launched an aggressive campaign targeting marijuana use, calling it a potent, addictive drug that often serves as a gateway to high-risk behavior.Rogers left his job as state director of the Washington, D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project to head the Nevada coalition. The group garnered 109,048 signatures to place the question on the ballot, well over the 61,336 required by the secretary of state's office. The Washington organization has provided substantial support to the initiative, Rogers said.If approved by Nevada voters in November and again in 2004, Question 9 would amend the state constitution to legalize possession of up to 3 ounces of marijuana by adults at least 21 years of age.Source: Las Vegas Sun (NV)Author: Emily Richmond Published: September 19, 2002Copyright: 2002 Las Vegas Sun, Inc.Contact: letters lasvegassun.comWebsite: http://www.lasvegassun.com/Related Articles & Web Sites:NRLEhttp://www.nrle.org/Marijuana Policy Projecthttp://www.mpp.org/Czar Plans Nevada Visit To Fight Pot Questionhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14162.shtmlDrug Czar To Lobby in Nevada http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14161.shtmlGoing to Pot: Nevada Plan to Legalize Marijuana http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14104.shtml

what to say to those who lie about prohibition
from:http://www.langleyadvance.com/023102/opinion/023102le6.htmlDrugs: Prohibition caused problems
Dear Editor,
Frank G. Sterle is simply incorrect when he asserts that alcohol prohibition in the US reduced alcohol consumption [Drugs: Legalization around the corner, Feb. 15 Letters, Langley Advance News]. The truth is that pre-prohibition use reached a peak in about 1911 and fell every year thereafter until 1922. Prohibition began in 1920.
From 1922 to the end of prohibition in 1933, consumption rose steadily. By 1926, arrests for public drunkenness and similar crimes rose to record levels - almost 30 per cent above the previous record year of 1911.
According to the US National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse (1972), overall consumption during prohibition was about 11 per cent higher than before prohibition.
Even worse was the fact that prohibition caused the first major drug epidemic among children. Admissions of teens to hospitals for alcohol-related problems soared to levels never seen before. School officials had to cancel school dances because so many kids showed up with hip flasks full of whiskey.
Some of the early supporters of prohibition turned against it because of its effect on their own children.
Before prohibition, their children found it difficult to get alcohol. After prohibition started, there was no regulatory control at all on the sellers, and bootleggers discovered (as modern drug dealers have discovered) that children made excellent couriers for both booze and money.
Prohibition was passed with a campaign of "Save the Children from Alcohol."
It was repealed with a campaign of "Save the Children from Prohibition." Historically speaking, the biggest single cause of drug epidemics is hysterical anti-drug campaigns.

Many years ago, I watched the Ken Burns series on the Civil War on PBS. In the first episode, they gave a historical rundown of slavery and how the country had split over it. But there was something said in the first episode that really made my blood boil.A Black man, who had been a slave and somehow had bought his freedom and stayed in the South(!), when he saw his first Union soldier, is supposed to have said "If I'd known you gun men was a'comin, I'd a saved my money."That man was willing to stay a slave and let someone else do the fighting and dying needed to free him.We have entirely too many like that in the free cannabis movement. People willing to let someone else do all the work, and take all the risks, and sit back and do nothing. I see them at the rallies all the time; they make lots of noise, but when they go home, do they send any money to organizations fighting for their freedom? No.Well, this Question 9 has a real chance. Don't let this baby be strangled in the crib like other referenda have. Spare some change and send it.Unless, you don't believe that you should be free. In that case, you definitely don't speak for me.

Open Letter to all Rock, Rap, Movie, TV stars etc…
For many years American people have seen your movies, gone to your concerts, bought your music. Basically made a lot of people rich and wealthy. Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement need money, and a lot of it. Now is the time for all you good brothers and sisters, to come to the aid of your fellow man/women. With your help this can change a lot of policies, which you have wrote songs and scripts about. Now is the time to step up to the plate. Many people are incarcerated at this time for outdated and unjust laws. Many of these people helped to get you where you are now. They went to your concerts, movies, and bought your music. They need your help now. This initiative if it passes, will have far reaching effects. This is a very special place in history.Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement needs money, and a lot of it, and now. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to show the world and the children what real Americans are made of. WE THE PEOPLE, can change the laws of our country. These people are serious and are doing a very professional job at it. They need money to buy ads. These ads are not cheap. This kind of effort is long overdue and it might be a while before we see this again if this effort fails. So PLEASE send these people money, a lot of it, and now. The GCW and Had Enough
First, GCW, I just want to reiterate your point: VOTE! And do more than vote, get others out voting. Those of you that are between 18 and 30 just do not vote enough. Please, let the world know that our young adults have a voice! And Had Enough, I want to repeat your request for people to donate to NRLE (www.nrle.org). They take donations as little as $10. Take sandwiches to work for a week, or sacrafice $10 work of weed money and DONATE! There are less than 3000 donations to NRLE. There are MILLIONS of MJ smokers. This is or BEST hope for reason on this issue for the entire nation. Support for the NRLE is a support for ALL of us WORLDWIDE.THC

I hope Dr. Russo doesn't mind
I filled out the form on the Nevadans for Responsible Law Enforcement website. I'm going to send a money order for $20, and in the comments section I wrote the following:Ethan Russo MD, renowned neurologist and editor of the Journal of Cannabis Therapeutics has stated several times in comments at Cannabisnews.com that he would love to debate John Walters. Now, with our new SWAT member surgeon general making false medical claims about cannabis, I think Dr. Russo is the expert who can debunk the lies. Why are we only using politicians to debate the governments' propagandists? If they want to spout medical information, let's fight back with Dr. Russo.Ethan Russo, MD can be reached at erusso blackfoot.netIf this was out of place on my part, Dr. Russo, please accept my most humble apology. I hope you know I did it out of tremendous respect for you.

I agree in principle that Walters should pay his own expenses, including his entourage as well, but we have to get real in the fact that these are all gov't paid employees, and the "SS" Secret Service "has to protect him no matter what"and as long as they are going to transport them, then one more body ain't goonna make the plane fall out of the sky if he would "DEBATE US ON NEUTRAL-GROUND"!I would wish to see as many reporters from our side as their side,hand-picked as-it-were to ACCURATELY give a FULL-ACCOUNTING of EVERYTHING-SAID in ANY conversations that take place.VIDEO AS WELL,and covered by ALL MEDIA!!! This government blows more money in a day on b/s than ANY of our group than all of US could spend in a LIFETIME!What's a measley $500,000,000 more?????They will just spend it anyway! We NEED to get this thing"DOWNSIZED",and it begins with the WOD/SCHEDULE-ONE-LIE!!!,AND GOOD PEOPLE LIKE THE READERS/COMMENTERS HERE AT C-NEWS,AND ALL LEGALIZERS!!!!! Money Had Enough
I totally agree with you Had Enough. I'm currently living in Nevada and am trying to get as many young people to vote as possible. If youy live in Nevada, go to school here or know anybody here, GET THEM TO VOTE!!!! If you can afford it, send money. The best thing that can be done here is to let the younger generation know how much this effects them (if they are caught with any cannabis, no financial aid unless your last name is Bush in which case you are a corrupt son of a bitch and you don't need finacial aid) and to get the word out. Go to colleges and hand out flyers, talk to local media, send in LTE's to newspapers, every little bit helps.

FASCISM:
1 -a. Totalitarianism marked by right-wing dictatorship and bellicose nationalism.
2. Oppressive, dictatorial control.
- The American Heritage Dictionary"Fascism should more appropriately be called corporatism because it is a merger of state and corporate power."
--Mussolini "The size of the lie is a definite factor in causing it to be believed, for the vast masses of the nation are in the depths of their hearts more easily deceived than they are consciously and intentionally bad. The primitive simplicity of their minds renders them a more easy prey to a big lie than a small one, for they themselves often tell little lies but would be ashamed to tell a big one."
From Benito Mussolini contributing to the "London Sunday Express," December 8, 1935"How many murders, suicides, robberies, criminal assaults, holdups, burglaries and deeds of maniacal insanity it causes each year, especially among the young, can only be conjectured...No one knows, when he places a marijuana cigarette to his lips, whether he will become a joyous reveller in a musical heaven, a mad insensate, a calm philosopher, or a murderer..."

Commissioner of the US Bureau of Narcotics 1930 1962"All propaganda must be so popular and on such an intellectual level, that even the most stupid of those towards whom it is directed will understand it. Therefore, the intellectual level of the propaganda must be lower the larger the number of people who are to be influenced by it."
From Benito Mussolini contributing to the "London Sunday Express," December 8, 1935Psychologist Tonya Canoso of the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center testified yesterday that marijuana is "highly addictive" and leads to medical, family and legal problems. That could be a compelling reason to ban even its religious use. "Through clever and constant application of propaganda, people can be made to see paradise as hell, and also the other way around, to consider the most wretched sort of life as paradise."
From Benito Mussolini contributing to the "London Sunday Express," December 8, 1935"There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the US, and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing, result from marijuana usage. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others."

EFA's are important for strengthening your immune system and protecting you from disease. accepting donations
So let me get this straight. If I want to give them a plane ticket it is against the law. Now if a tobacco company or pharmaceutical company wants to give them millions of dollars it's perfectly fine? Now watching how one of the Enron pricks spent $11 million dollars to furnish ONE of his apartments, nothing will happen to him. I hate what's happening here, how do we keep hope? My uncle is dead from cancer and couldn't receive medicine for it. Many people I've worked with are dead and suffered needlessly. Something has to change, a person can only take so much.

Hi Swampie
I'll tell you why it was wise to offer to pay Walters airfare. In a democracy we should be allowed to vote and change laws that are no longer popular with the people. The issue of the government paying to carry Walters all over the place to help stop reform in the USA or Canada might in the end be a serious mistake for our opposition and very benefical to us. That is just my opinion.

I am posting this again, not to annoy anyone but to let the world know what is really going on.
FoM, If this bothers you or anybody please delete it.This is Noelle. This is the crack that Noelle was found with. This is Noelle's drug warrior father saying this is a private family matter. These are the authorities agreeing. This is Jim. Jim had a job as a computer draftsman. This is the bag of cannabis that Jim had. This is Jim in jail. This is Jim’s lawyer. This is Jim’s house up for sale to pay for lawyer. This is Jim’s divorce papers so Jim’s wife can collect government support for her and her children because she is having a hard time paying the bills, because Jim was the bread winner of the house. These are the authorities, collecting government paychecks agreeing and praising, “good job men” “God Bless the government paycheck” over drinks at the local gin mill. (No slam intended on the gin mill, they have to serve them.)
Special Note: Noelle allegedly committed 3 drug-related felonies since January. One for allegedly calling in fake prescriptions at pharmacies for Xanex, Second for allegedly stealing drugs from the nurse’s locker at the rehab center where she is staying. Third for allegedly possessing crack at the same rehab center.

to add to your quotes, my favorite...
"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in every country."
