Activists Nabbed in Raid of Medical Marijuana Site

Federal agents raided a medical marijuana collective near Santa Cruz and arrested two well-known activists Thursday, the first such action in Northern California since February's raids in Oakland and San Francisco. But by day's end, Valerie and Michael Corral -- who helped write the state's medical marijuana law -- were home. An official source said the federal prosecutors had declined to charge them, forcing the Drug Enforcement Administration to let them go.
Still, medical marijuana advocates across the nation took the raid and its destruction of 167 marijuana plants as a declaration of war, promising protests at noon today outside federal buildings in dozens of cities including Oakland, San Francisco and San Jose. "My heart's broken," Valerie Corral said Thursday night. "We have 250 members of our collective garden, a lot of people who are sick and suffering. But they (the DEA) cannot make us stand down. We will carry on business as usual." More than 20 DEA agents, some reportedly clad in riot gear and wielding assault rifles, arrived early Thursday at the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) just off Route 1 near Davenport, 60 miles south of San Francisco. DEA spokesman Special Agent Richard Meyer said Thursday morning that the Corrals, WAMM's co-founders, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver. "We received information from confidential sources that these people were involved in marijuana trafficking," he said, adding it didn't matter whether that "trafficking" differed from the alliance's free provision of marijuana to its physician-screened members. "That's a myth put out by people who want to legalize marijuana. There is no medical marijuana," he said. "We make no distinctions because there are none -- people who grow marijuana are marijuana traffickers. Our job is to enforce federal laws, and we surely will." Yet by day's end, the U.S. attorney's office said no indictment or criminal complaint had been filed against the Corrals, and declined further comment. An official source elsewhere said federal prosecutors had declined to file charges. Valerie Corral late Thursday said she was "told to await indictment," which entails prosecutors convincing a federal grand jury the Corrals should be tried. Michael Corral said DEA agents who released them said they could expect to hear from the government again, "could be in a day, a week or a year." The federal government still deems all marijuana growth, possession or use illegal, even though California voters approved medical use in 1996. Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Oregon and Washington have similar laws. Word of the raid spread fast and far, and distance didn't dilute the resulting rhetoric. "These are terrorist actions," said Bruce Mirken, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project in Washington, D.C. "If Osama bin Laden sent squads of armed men into the U.S. to storm medical facilities, seize confidential patient records and literally take medicine from the sick and dying, George W. Bush would be promising to hunt him down to the ends of the earth. If he wants to hunt terrorists, he should start with his own DEA." Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative executive director Jeff Jones agreed: "I can't believe that federal priorities are this out of line -- we've only arrested one terrorist in California, but near the anniversary of 9/11 we have the DEA up to no good, seizing the medicine of 250 Californians." WAMM board member and patient Suzanne Pfeil, a paraplegic who uses marijuana to control post-polio syndrome pain, said more than 20 WAMM patients went to the farm Thursday to beg DEA agents to leave the plants, to no avail. "Now these people have no medicine for this year -- it's being cut down and it's going to be buried somewhere," she said. "I feel like my country is waging war against me." DEA agents in February raided the Oakland home-office of noted marijuana author Ed Rosenthal; the Harm Reduction Center medical marijuana club in San Francisco; and other sites, arresting Rosenthal and three others. Rosenthal on Thursday noted WAMM accepts no money for marijuana it provides to patients, relying instead on charitable donations. "These two people, Valerie and Mike, did not do this for money, they did this for love," he said. "They're very loving people, and to call them drug traffickers is just laughable." Said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the national Drug Policy Alliance, "This club, of all the clubs that have been raided, stands out as being the one that was most true to the hospice spirit -- there were no shenanigans, there was no profit-making." Meyer said agents seized three rifles and a shotgun; Pfeil said the weapons were unloaded family heirlooms passed down to Michael Corral by his grandfather. The Corrals helped draft the state law provision letting patients and caregivers cultivate their own medical marijuana, and Valerie Corral in 1999 served on state Attorney General Bill Lockyer's medical marijuana policy task force. "The DEA under the Bush administration has made it perfectly clear that they don't care about the will of California voters, who think medical marijuana should be available for people whose doctors believe they would benefit from it," Lockyer spokeswoman Hallye Jordan said Thursday. Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department spokesman Deputy Kim Allen said the DEA never told his department about the raid. Deputies went there after the fact only to keep the peace between protesters and DEA agents, he said: "Our concern is to make sure nobody gets hurt." The department has a marijuana enforcement team targeting illegal trafficking, Allen said, but meets regularly with the Corrals and had deemed WAMM in compliance with -- and protected by -- state law. Santa Cruz County Supervisor Mardi Wormhoudt said she was "absolutely appalled" by the raid, and called WAMM "an extremely responsible collective... they have operated their business in a way that has been exemplary." With Sept. 11 so near, "it is not reassuring to me to know that federal agents, instead of concentrating on issues of national security, are running around the mountains of Santa Cruz County disrupting the work of people who provide a valuable medical resource to the community," she added. Note: Advocates pledge protests today in response to arrests, destruction of pot plants. Hello Congressman Suet, what a day!
in Cannabis History! Something good is going to happen, out of this disaster, latin for 'against the stars', as we now have another hero for the cannabis crucifix-ation, sad as it is, when this this over, it will have been worth it! No way will these patients have to go without their medication. This is temporary, a reminder of how far out of control our militarized police state-media-complex can be, if laws are ignored or not enforced, as it applies to them. Not just us, as is the case currently, so I guess I better e-mail Phil Donahue and get him on board! People a C-News Rock, As the Senate Report confirms everthing stated here! Over and Over, how's everyone feel about that!? Mind boggling, but what Canada is still capable of, but what the U.S. has officially lost. And that is common sense, and true democracy, we are truly the Federal State of America, as someone mentioned earlier. Nail on the head! Amazing times we live in, no doubt! NM

Uhhh.... I called the DEA
to complain about their actions here is California and how they come into our state and overrule our laws and the fact that they are causing the sick and ill to do without their medication. You guys should call them sometime... it's very interesting. By the time the phone call was over he had my phone number and address. I told him I don't fear him. I asked how can we possibly get our point across to the DEA and how can you make a complaint. I guess my calling and telling them my feelings about their actions will be considered a complaint."Tom" was like a tape recorder of the propoganda. Garbage in garbage out. I had to remind him that I was not a 4th grader that believed all the bull they give and that I personally have gone through all the requirements of California Law in order to use my medication and that it is a medication.I also called my reps in DC. Guess we'll see how they respond....

Just wrote Donahue...
Good idea FoM & thanks for the link Jose! My letter is short but to the point. Here it is:Dear Phil,I think you should consider having Valerie & Michael Corral on your show. They are the operators of a medical marijuana collective near Santa Cruz which was just raided by the DEA. This is a great injustice & it is imperative that they get their story out. I believe that you are the only hope that this will happen. Please consider this request!!! Thank you & oh yeah, I love your show. - meIf you haven't wrote him yet please do so. Donahue is the man
My reading today talked about the troubles of Donahue's show and its not desirable performance against Connie Chung that might bring the show to an end. He is wondering if he will be allowed 6 months to prove his drawing power. Last night one of the remaining employed investigative reporters, Greg Palast, was on. Not having cable, I will be looking for transcripts later.Donahue's personal position was clear and admitted when McFreaky was on the show. I agree with the thread consensus that Donahue is the man.I might add that in North Carolina the primary ends this Tuesday. Sounds funny doesn't it? I voted today in the Republican primary and was the only one in the Elections office. I was very clear I did not want to vote for any incumbent and they were very helpful. They got one good dose of anti-incumbent sentiment from a polite old goat. There will be a partial day of voting Saturday at the Elections Board Office with no voting on Monday as they have to prepare for the opening of all election sites on Tuesday. Since most of the sites are schools, schools will be closed. I just think it is wonderful that they have given more access and convenience to voters and even the voters that vote in their precincts Tuesday will benefit from shorter lines. In the November elections, the main Election Board office will allow North Carolina voters about a week to vote before the November 5th finale.I would like to extend my thanks to the choir members that wrote to Donahue. 1,2

I'm Blown Away
I don't get blown away unless I read comments like are in this thread! All I can say is Wow! One thing we might not have is common sense when trying to take on those in power but we have the passion and determination I believe.Time for words to be used like yes and no answers. We need explanation besides studies and surveys that we can't believe. We need to hear from the heart of those for and against Cannabis. No more issues about the children because we are talking about adults and in the case of WAMM very sick people and all those hurt by being raided. It's about we the people!

My own missive to Mr. Donahue
Dear Mr. Donahue, As I am writing this, it may just now be coming to light in the major news media that the DEA has once again attacked a clinic dispensing medicinal marijuana in California. In this case, unlike the past, the Feds have made absolutely no charges against the brave people providing this not-for-pay service. They barged in, wearing their Darth Vader wannabe outfits with submachine guns drawn...as if someone in the final stages of AIDS or cancer could put up much of a fight, even if so inclined. The DEA has callously destroyed the medicine that many of these sick and dying people need to ameliorate their pain and/or allow them to survive their illnesses with some modicum of quality-of-life. Phil, this abomination has been going on too long. Thousands of Americans are suffering because our own government is behaving towards it's citizens as if it, and not some raghead in Boogaboogastan, is a terrorist. And it does so under the absolute flimsiest of reasons. It may interest you to know that the Canadian Senate has, in the last 48 hours, issued a report that has categorically refuted all of the Reefer Madness nonsense that the DEA has relied upon for justifying this barbarity. Yet our government narrow-mindedly, monomaniacally refuses to examine that and similar studies which state the same thing. And each time, the government mulishly, stubbornly, and dare I say it, stupidly insists that it is a 'dangerous drug'. Asa Hutchinson of the DEA, along with several patients, Doctors (Ethan Russo comes readily to mind, as he has published voluminous and exhaustive studies into the medical usefulness of marijuana) and civil libertarians should be asked onto your program to explain, to several patients, why those patients should have their lives endangered further by their own government's desire to 'protect' them from, of all things, marijuana. The DEA and it's sister organizations have been allowed to duck the questions for far too long. This needs airing in a public forum once and for all. Only you can make it happen, Phil. Please consider this as a topic for discussion...before too many more die. Sincerely,
(Me)

I wrote Phil
Here is what I wrote:Mr. Donahue,I don’t know how many of these types of requests you have to deal with on a daily basis, but your name has been mentioned as a strong voice of reason in these trying times for our movement. Yesterday’s DEA raid on the Wo/Man’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WOMM) was a strike at the heart of our compassionate mission. Valerie is a compassionate activist that setup the most noble of medical marijuana cooperatives. The farm owners never took money for the medicine their patients need, but instead united a small community to help with cultivation. This represents what the movement is fundamentally about: compassion, not profit. The DEA has maintained that the operations they have recently shut down are for profit drug trafficking rings. They will have a hard time saying the same with WAMM.You have stuck your neck out for this issue before, most notably recently with McCaffery and Gary Johnson. I believe it would be good for the national/international community be made aware of what is truly going on in California. Please take this issue on and help this small community in need of compassionate attention.Thank you,

I tried to give him something to chew on
Phil,Currently on-going in California the DEA is seeking to stomp on the necks sick and dying people who, under the care of their physicians, seek relief from symptoms by growing and smoking Cannabis. As you know Phil, these activities are approved by California voters and the State Supreme Court. Major media as usual seem much more interested in what's happening with the latest Boy Band or who's on American Idol. Phil, I'm counting on you to go to California and bring this critical issue home to middle America! Please read about the recent raid on the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Santa Cruz. They're a collective of 250 AIDS, Cancer and other patients who've run an impeccable operation for ten years now. I think you'll find this a very compelling story well worth telling. I also believe that it is a story that much of America (outside of California) has been deprived of hearing for a variety of reasons - upon which I hope you'll focus in part.Important points:The DEA has changed it's stated policy regarding what ammounts of Marijuana it considers significant. Where once they ignored grow operations under 100 plants now they routinely raid operations of only a few dozen! This has happened within the last 2 months! The DEA has completely bypassed State and Local authorities, in most cases not even calling the local Sherrif in advance of major actions! The DEA is conducting terrorist raids literally against Sick and Dying people. They enter in a storm dressed in all black wearing facemasks and carrying automatic weapons! The DEA is conducting it's terroristic operations against peaceful people who operate above boards and are CLEARLY NOT engaging in any criminal activity of a nefarious nature. Their only crime is growing and using their medicine. Please Phil, the situation is getting way out of hand and it is clearly being directed by some very powerful and power-hungry political figures. I urge you to investigate these and help bring their activities to the scrutiny of the public!Thank You!

Of all the media types, Donohue has shown the most in the 'pair' department. Having that French writer who wrote the book on Bush's connections with the bin Laden clan and then the wife of a 9/11 victim come on his show and demand an investigation into that day really 'stirred the sh-pot'Donohue has shown more guts in his little toe than the entire American media has en masse. It was a small but highly vocal group and from what I saw, we got lots of positive response.flyers for ASA were widely distributed. My favorite encounter was when a Fire Department Captain stopped to hear me out. "I agree with you completely, prohibition is bullshit" he said. I asked if he would read a flyer explaining ASA and to consider calling his congressman to ask them to stop the DEA from arresting sick and dying patients by pointing automatic weapons in their faces. He said he would do so happily.Of course I said THANK YOU SIR!

Thieves and Liars
Two of the things my God despises. I'm not trying to force my beliefs down anybodies throat, but it's part of my belief system.God not only despises lies, but He promises to expose the lies. This is only the beginning.Non-Christians can ignore this, but I'm putting a call out to my fellow Christians. God said in His word that whenever two or more believers gather in His name, our prayers will be answered. Please join with me in prayer for all the sick and hurting people.Dear Heavenly Father:I know it's not your will that any would suffer, yet we have people masquerading as Christians who are perpetrating violence and hatred against the least of your people; the sick and dying as well as those trying to help ease their pain and suffering. I join together with all believers in asking You to end the violence, the hatred and the hurting. Stop the evil being perpetrated in Your name. Show the world the abounding love that You stand for. All praise and glory will be given to You, Lord God. We can't do this on our own, but we're Your willing agents, and we'll continue to do Your work, even as we face persecution. I ask this, agreeing with other believers, in the name of Jesus Christ. Please let it stop!Amen

This is the year
The DEA is no longer making any pretense of not targeting the clinics. Up to now, they've been able to use the disengenuous ruse of 'criminal investigations' of 'intent to distribute for profit' and been able to get away with it. But something has happened in Washington. Something major. The Feds now have been given reason to feel they are beyond reproach, legally. They have been told, by agency or agencies unknown (Homeland Security, perhaps?) that they can do no wrong in attacking the helpless. So now, the 'kid gloves' come off. They have finally removed the smiley mask and are showing their fangs. If any clinics thought that by strictly adhering to local laws, dotting every "i" and crossing every "t", they now know that it will not stop an attack. The Feds mean to rip out the tree of compassion centers, root and all. Clinicians are not safe. And patients, unless this is stopped, will die by the dozens each month before the end of the year. But my question is: Who gave the order? Who told them the light was green? Who rang the bell? Who? Learn who that was, and you have half the problem solved.I mentioned last year that the way things were going, this would be the year that cannabis would be legalized in either Great Britain or Canada, and look at what's hapening. But I also mentioned the repression here would grow much worse before it gets any better. And look at what's also happened. This is the year of great change...for better or worse. Pity the antis want to make it worse. Finally, for all those pantywaists that call themselves Democrats: this Libber is laughing at you. Spineless, gutless, have yet to comment on the matter. Dems, you want an issue to spank Bush Too's perpetually exposed political backside with? Want a piece of him that you can safely get away with carving? Well, here it is! Ready made for you, sitting on your plate, all nice and warm. All you got to do is start slicing. If you have the strength to lift that carving knife. Which I seriouslly doubt.

More DEA quotes to shock us freedom lovers!
Taken from http://members.aol.com/deawatch/daily.htm
I don't even know what to say about this guys comments, Its ignorance literly blows my mind."Finally! Someone says something that makes sense!
My hat is off to the 12:36 writer. We have already taken the first step toward full American independence from the flakey UN by abolishing our membership in its idiotic war crimes tribunal. We should never be held accountable to any international law. The next step is to abolish the UN entirely. Adolph Hitler was right when he said that democracy was the plague of civilization. Herr Hitler had just abolished the Reichstag when he made that statement. Germany had no need for a Congress and neither do we. We have a glorious new president who has the guts to do all the things we all know need to be done. Let's first get rid of Saddam Hussein, then we'll do the next creep and the next until we have cleaned house completely. Let the war begin now! The good thing about having a war is that all internal bickering ceases."Excuse me?!!! Hitler was right? Wait it gets better, although this next qoute may have been made with sarcasm as I cannot fathom a federal employee would actually think this way."As for following our president into combat, I like the way a WASP military consultant on CNN put it this morning. He said that we, the American people led by our great white leaders, need to save the people of Iraq from themselves and their bad leaders. Nicely put.Didn't we also say that some 400 years ago about the American Indian? Aren't our native Americans better off under white leadership? Sure they are. No longer do native Americans have to manage an entire continent. No longer do they have to rely on hunting and fishing for food. Today their land management reponsibilities are well within their walking distance. As for food, they can always rely on packaged surplus rations such as Spam meat, Velveeta cheese and powdered milk. We can do the same for the people of Iraq. By invading Iraq we can place our oil companies in charge of their vast oil wealth so that the Iraqi people will no longer have to worry about OPEC. We can build the same kind of racial and economic segregated neighborhoods, such as a have here in America, to separate the good Iraqis from from the bad Iraqis. Manifest Destiny did not end on our Pacific Coast. Our mission is to extend the goodness of America to the entire world.God is white. Jesus was a natural leader because he was the only blond hair, blue-eyed white male living amongst dark skinned, dark-haired, brown-eyed Middle Easterners. It is our destiny to help the Iraqi people become more like us. It is the destiny of the white race to rule the colored peoples of the world. And the great part about taking over the Middle East is that we can one day look forward to eventually turning over all the Administrative and policing of those backward countries to our good friends in Israel who have expressed only love and affection for the Muslim religion.""Just say no" to the DEA!

No charges will be filed...
