HAMILTON Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty is ashamed of his dope-smoking experiments and says it's a bad example for his kids.
"I do regret having experimented with marijuana," McGuinty said yesterday after visiting Hamilton's Westdale high school."It is not something I'm proud of. It's not a good example for my own four teenaged children. I'm embarrassed about it. I stand against the use of marijuana."Students cheered Eugene Kinzburg, 17, when he confronted McGuinty on the legalization of marijuana during a Q&A session at Westdale."I do not support legalization, I support decriminalization," he told the crowd of 600.Kinzburg wasn't satisfied with the answer. He said McGuinty was vague and fuzzy. "He did not give a clear answer. He did not explain to me what he would do," Kinzburg said.Afterward, McGuinty cleared the air. "It should be made a provincial offence. There ought to be stiff fines associated with it. I don't want our young people to use marijuana," he said.On mainstream issues, students Mae Nam and Aaron Orkin were left shaking their heads after quizzing McGuinty on health care and education.Orkin described Liberal report cards on education as "quaint and homey," but lacking sophistication. "I found him a bit elementary for the level of these students," Orkin said.Nam wanted to know how the Liberals would finance their big spending promises for hospitals and schools. "I can't really see where the money is coming from," she said. The confusion suggests the Liberals need to step up their election game, McGuinty said."We are going to have to work harder on that front, there is no doubt about it."However, McGuinty did defend his Tuesday night leaders' debate performance ."I would do everything the same way. I am who I am. I'm not given to theatrics. I'm not given to bombast. I'm the right guy with the right ideas."
