The federal government should legalize the use of marijuana by adults, the Senate committee on Illegal Drugs on recommended in its final report Wednesday. The committee's report says the current system of prohibition in Canada does not work and should be replaced by a regulated system, perhaps like that used for alcohol.
The report also says that Canadians with criminal records for possession of the drug should have their slates wiped clean."Scientific evidence overwhelmingly indicates that cannabis is substantially less harmful than alcohol and should be treated not as a criminal issue but as a social and public health issue," said Senator Pierre Nolin, the committee chairman. The Canadian Police Association will hold a press conference to respond to the report later Wednesday.More to come Source: Globe and Mail (Canada)Author: Darren Yourk, Globe and Mail UpdatePublished: Wednesday, September 4, 2002Copyright: 2002 The Globe and Mail CompanyContact: letters globeandmail.caWebsite: http://www.globeandmail.ca/Related Articles:Why on Earth is Marijuana Still Illegal? http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread13755.shtmlCanada: The Debate Over Decriminalization http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread12697.shtml

Yes! The Truth will prevail!
This is what I expected, FoM. I'm so happy for my Canadian brothers and sisters.

Waiting to hear what the cops have to say...
"The Canadian Police Association will hold a press conference to respond to the report later Wednesday."I'd sure be glad if they said, "I guess we were wrong. We have to accept all the facts determined in the years this study was conducted. We back legalization."But what we'll probably hear is: "Everything in that report is wrong" followed by a re-iteration of all the prohibitionist BS the report soundly refutes.-TM
