A Florida man was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison for operating a chain of indoor marijuana-growing operations in DuPage County.
Philip Alonso, 44, accepted a plea agreement with the DuPage County state's attorney's office, said prosecutor Joseph Ruggiero. Alonso, who claimed a Miami address, lived most of the time in DuPage County, cultivating marijuana in several homes he rented or owned, Ruggiero said.Alonso faced a maximum prison sentence of 30 years for illegal production of marijuana and possession of the substance with intent to deliver if he had been convicted in a trial.Last September, after a neighbor of a home owned by Alonso on the 600 block of East 5th Avenue, Naperville, became suspicious of activity, police investigated and discovered a massive indoor marijuana-growing operation.Besides thousands of marijuana plants ranging in height from 6 inches to 6 feet, police found lamps, drying machines, scales, bag sealers and thousands of pounds of a dirt-peat-humus mixture. After discovering the first cache, police units throughout the county raided homes on the 0-100 block of Butterfield Road, Wheaton; the 21 W 700 block of North Avenue, Glen Ellyn; the 3600 block of Madison Street, Oak Brook; and the 700 block of South Washington Street and the 30 W 500 block of Ferry Road, both in Naperville. In the first Naperville home, police said they found 1,000 plants and 10 pounds of harvested plants. In the five other homes, police said they collected a total of more than 1,000 marijuana plants and 60 pounds of harvested marijuana.Dino Pedicini, 37, of Glendale Heights, Alonso's assistant, pleaded guilty last year to illegal production of marijuana and was sentenced to 7 years in prison.Ruggiero said DuPage and federal prosecutors have begun forfeiture actions against Alonso's assets.
