Anderson Didn't Speak for Rank-and-File

Letters To The Editor
Source: Las Vegas Review-Journal
To the editor: Jacob Sullum is wrong and misinformed ("Nevada cops got pot issue right the first time," Aug 13.) Andy Anderson is not "Nevada cops" -- not in any sense of the phrase. We are more than 3,000 strong and when we spoke out we got it right. We said "No" to marijuana.
The "public outcry" that caused the group (NCOPS) to reconsider the endorsement of Question 9 was an outcry by the cops, prompted by this outrageous endorsement by one man (Andy Anderson) on behalf of more than 3,000 officers, claiming that we support legalizing marijuana. Columnist John L. Smith had it right when he said, "One can only guess what Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs President Andy Anderson was smoking last week when he announced his group's endorsement of the controversial marijuana initiative without a vote of the board." It is not the fault of the police officer that the arrest process takes a certain amount of time. If the citizens are not satisfied that there are a sufficient number of officers available to respond to calls and confront problems in a timely fashion, then fund and hire more officers. As for pro-active, self-initiated contacts, I would be very proud to make an arrest of someone who has three ounces of marijuana in his/her possession. Furthermore, I'll bet that you all want me to make that arrest. Don't agree? Imagine how you'll feel when you find three ounces of marijuana in your child's or grandchild's drawer. Bet you wish I'd made that arrest, now. Think about that when you vote on Question 9. RUSSELL A. WOOD LAS VEGAS Black Market To the editor: The dual news stories last week of the Nevada Conference of Police and Sheriffs first endorsing the proposed Nevada ballot initiative to amend current marijuana laws and then reversing their stance following NCOPS President Andy Anderson's resignation ("Police group retracts support of marijuana," Aug. 10) made for a sad commentary. In the past 30 years, stringent and harsh criminal sanctions against responsible adult marijuana use have done nothing to reduce use. Rather they have helped create the largest criminal black market in the nation outside of arms and weapons. This criminal market helps fund more dangerous and violent activities which endanger not only police, but the public they serve. Smart, street-wise police know full well the drag that enforcing marijuana prohibition laws have on their primary mission of protecting and serving the public. As the departing Anderson stated in his original endorsement of the initiative, "A single (marijuana) arrest would take anywhere from a couple of hours to about half my shift ... time that could have been better spent on the streets addressing violent crime." More questions need to be asked of the eight NCOPS board members who backpedaled last week, claiming "confusion" as to what Anderson was asking them during his telephone survey earlier in the week. Further, close scrutiny should be used against any and all law officers who campaign against the intiative on taxpayer time. Arrest the kids
"Imagine how you'll feel when you find three ounces of marijuana in your child's or grandchild's drawer. Bet you wish I'd made that arrest, now."
This gives you a good feeling to know that the cops are always there to arrest and jail the kids for a little weed.

iT IS NICE TO BE BACK.
Christ God Our Father, gave Us everything We need. A lot of what We need is in cannabis. To cage cannabis, is to cage the Truth, given to Us By Our Father. As 1st comes My Father, All that My Father has given to Us, comes with Him. Cannabis shall not be distorted by the distorted for the distorted. We are going to stop that.If You do not like the rabid dog, attached to Your ankle then free the dog.If You are a prohibitionist, take a step kcab. Start over, and this time, on the very 1st page of the Bible, get it right. He does not refer to it as dope.It is PLANT.Have respect.

If dumb, stupid, ingnorant, and devoid of Truth,,,
then fund and hire more officers. The police are seperated by oath, from the Holy Spirit of Truth, by placing the laws of man, above the laws of God.Christ God.Jesus Christ stated that commandment, in one sentence is: LOVE YOUR BROTHER.You can not love Your brother and cage Him for using a plant. We are told to have access to the Holy Spirit of Truth, that one thing that must take place, is to obey the commandments. We are told ON THE VERY 1st PAGE OF THE BIBLE, That all the green plants are good. When You take a whole class of people and seperate their chances of grasping the Truth on a Godly scale, like society does with its police, then the potential of receiving ALL Truth, is greatly diminished. The Christians that in any manner support caging humans for using cannabis, don't realize it, but preclude themselves from that promised Holy Spirit of Truth, that Christ God, so fervently, tried to prepare Us for. They preclude themselves, starting from the very 1st page of the Bible, and now We have police, UNABLE to grasp that which comes from the origins of ALL Truth.Stopped them, right from the start. It doesn't have to be that way.We know the Truth and will share it.The GREEN COLLAR WORKERI had a worm... got it out... lost a week...If the cops want to make prisons safer, then cage everyone who smokes cannabis, and then allow them access to cannabis. Your prisons will be safe. And what will You do, for safety, once all the peacefull cannabis users, are in prison, making the prisons safe?Nevada, must get many that normally do not take part in the election process, to RISE AND SHINE!!!!They have 30 days before the election, to REGISTER.Not to legalize...RE-LEGALIZE!!!!!&!(AKINE TO STOPPING A RABID DOG)

It doesn't make sense.
Imagine how you'll feel when you find three ounces of marijuana in your child's or grandchild's drawer. Bet you wish I'd made that arrest, now.Yes and if your child or grandchild has any marijuana now turn them into the police and introduce them to the criminal justice system. And hey, if they put them in a foster home because you are "obviously" a bad parent, that's just normal.I have read the sentence at the top several times and I do not know exactly what the guy is saying. And no, I totally am against people getting arrested for marijuana if they have a truckload of the stuff. But now that hempseed oil that is less than .0001 THC- that must really be dangerous.1,2

...and have them apologize to the kids. That ought to breed some freaking humility in alleged "adults".

Great letter from piggie
What a great letter from the cop. I would definitely think that most reading it would be compelled to vote for Question 9. The only way it could have been better were if he directly said "let's raise taxes" to fund more officers. But I think most people smart enough to be reading letters to the editor can figure it out.Notice how he specifically mentioned finding herb in, not only your child's drawer, but your GRANDCHILD'S drawer - he knows that only people that will vote against this thing are the over 65-set. By the way, if I found one of my parents going through my kid's drawers, I'd ban 'em from the floor of the house.

If you don't support the NV gov't taking the reins from organized criminals in the distribution and control of cannabis, you are supporting these same criminals remaining in power. Great move, moron. Go have a drink and throw your money in the slots.

I've seen it time and time again...
...Some cop is asked if he or she likes arresting marijuana users, and the inevitable reply is "We don't make the laws, we just enforce them".Now they've crossed the line into lobbying against proposed law changes. I guess they'd like to do both after all.
