Carson City -- Secretary of State Dean Heller will conduct televised public forums in Las Vegas and Reno next week to take comments on the proposed softening of marijuana laws. Heller said Thursday his office must write the pros and cons of the proposed constitutional amendment, which will be on the November election ballot."Although these public forums are not required by Nevada law, as the state's chief elections officer, I strongly believe they are an essential element in the process of shaping language describing a ballot question." he said.
The Las Vegas forum will be held Tuesday and televised on Las Vegas ONE, Cox cable Channels 1 and 39, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. The call-in number is 735-3291. Questions or comments can also be sent in advance via e-mail to the secretary of state's office at: nvelect govmail.state.nv.us -- or by fax to (775) 684-5718.Questions directed to the secretary of state's office must be received before noon Monday.Heller said he is asking representatives from both sides to participate. The proposed amendment would decriminalize possession of 3 ounces of marijuana or less by adults. The Reno forum will be held Monday.Heller said he did the same thing two years ago on the proposed constitutional amendment to prohibit marriages between persons of the same sex.The marijuana initiative petition qualified for the ballot by gathering more than 61,336 signatures of registered voters. When the Legislature states a proposed constitutional amendment, it sets up a committee to write the language for and against the issue.Source: Las Vegas Sun (NV)Author: Cy Ryan, Sun Capital BureauPublished: July 19, 2002 Copyright: 2002 Las Vegas Sun, Inc.Contact: letters lasvegassun.comWebsite: http://www.lasvegassun.com/Related Articles & Web Site:Marijuana Policy Projecthttp://www.mpp.org/DEA Director Criticizes Marijuana Ballot Measurehttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread13388.shtmlMarijuana Proposal To Be On Ballothttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread13351.shtmlMedical Marijuana Vote Denounced by U.S. Aide http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread13343.shtml

Just a Note
I wanted to mention that the e mail account where C News e mail goes was down for over a day. I'm not sure if any was lost but I thought I should mention it just in case. If I missed a submission I'm really sorry.

FBI Crime reports.
I distinctly remember reading somewhere that the FBI is really weasely about the release of those figures, largely because NORML can't wait to get ahold of them.Might try asking somebody at NORML....

..p4me...
..I am also one who looks into the availiability of information, and texts of legistlation,,and numbers concerning the budgets, and accounting for the federal government....There is alot of info availiable,,but if one researches to obtain the numbers,by going to '.gov, websites,,or to the amazing ,(but spooky) GAO website,,,,there are many blank spots when it comes to accounting for huge sums of money...

..I always imagine the scenario,,of an American,,who wants to see what is going on with their tax money,,and decides to look at the governments websites for information....they find a staggering quagmire of obscene deceptions, that are undecipherable........but there is enough there,,to make even experts,,like phasetheory freak out!. ..,,but maybe not,,because apparently,,phasetheory knows more about history than we ever will,,so I guess it's up to guys like him to interpret history,,and let us know what the heck is going on......dddd

Another Heads Up
A message from Judge Gray Date: Thu, 18 Jul 2002 Judge Gray has asked that we pass this message on to our lists, be sure to share with all of your friends and contacts. November Coalition assisted Stossel producers, too! Don't miss this News special on the War on drugs - July 30th - check your local listings. From Judge Gray:From my past contacts with you, as well as each person receiving this message, I felt you would be interested to hear that an ABC News Special on the War on Drugs with John Stossel will be broadcast nationwide on Tuesday, July 30. In most parts of the country, the broadcast time will be 10 pm, and the rest will be 9 pm. This should be an accurate and hard-hitting show. I will have a part of the broadcast, and I can tell you that these producers are more knowledgeable about the issues than anyone in the media with whom I have worked. In putting together this special, Stossel and his crew have traveled to England, Holland, Detroit, the Bronx and Colombia. They really have a story to tell, and it should be heard. Please help me spread the word to people who would be interested. As most of you know, all that people involved in the drug policy movement feel is necessary to change away from our failed system is to legitimize the discussion and let people know that it is OK to discuss this subject. Exposing people to what is really happening is the way to do it.Judge Jim Gray

I want to see!
Any chance the Nevada broadcasts will be archived online somewhere, like maybe Pot-TV? Heck, why not just show them on C-SPAN?

It is a repeat. Steve just told me. I never saw it before but then I only recently could check out videos. Before it was impossible. Before the satellite I mean.

Check this out!
Sowing the Seeds of Legalization
Follow the story of a Canadian man who's selling marijuana seeds online and using the profits to fund his fight to legalize the drug.
By CyberCrime staff
Video Highlight Watch the Emeryseeds.com segment http://www.techtv.com/cybercrime/viceonline/story/0,23008,3378664,00.html

Canadian Marc Emery says he's leading a revolution. His goal? Marijuana for everyone! This week on "CyberCrime," we take a look at Emery's quest to legalize pot using the Web. Known as the Prince of Pot, Emery says he's the dominant marijuana seed seller in the world. At his website, Emeryseeds.com, cannabis connoisseurs can chose from hundreds of high-grade marijuana seeds. Emery says he sells over a million seeds a year, raking in more than $3 million. Emery's master plan is to spread his seeds, and then use the profits to bankroll his war against the anti-pot establishment. Emery says he made over $400,000 in pro-pot political contributions in 2001. And Emery donates seed money to help cover the legal expenses incurred by people facing marijuana-related charges. But despite of his revolutionary goals, Emery's online seed operation is clearly illegal. So why don't police throw him in jail? Watch "CyberCrime's" Better Living episode and find out. This article is based on original reporting by "CyberCrime" segment producer Jon Taylor. Originally posted July 23, 2002

The Ballot measure seems pretty simple
why not just vote on that? I mean to collect all those signatures they had to show the voters something. I've read it a number of times in news stories and it sounds like a very reasonable proposal to
1) tell the cops to go after REAL CRIME and leave peaceful citizens alone.
2) Enact laws designed to punish people for driving while impared, selling Marijuana to minors, and probably a few other obvious infractions, felonious or otherwise.
3) Establish legal ages for posession and use and establish quantity limits (silly though they may be).
4) Provide a system of distribution for medical users who could not otherwise gain access.
5) Probably several other stipulations to sidestep conflict with federal law.My point is that if you can't fit it all this onto one 8.5 X 11 page you're probably saying way too much! Remember the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, very spare to the point and unambiguous!Sounds to me like this guy wants to start meddling where he should leave well enough alone. Political carreers get built starting with bullshit grandstanding like this. Nevadans should show up in force and tell the prohibitionist fanatics to keep their hands off the ballot language!

What the hell is going on?
I guess most remember the preliminary 2001 FBI Uniform Crime Report that did not include any arrest records. Well how about going to fbi.gov and see if you can find anything on 2001 arrest or even mention of the 2001 Uniform crime Report. Here it is almost August and they do not have up last years numbers. This is not right and plenty of people should be asking why this information is not up on the FBI website. And then there is the information that should be up at the DOJ website also. This is the age of information and the age of instant communication, that is unless you are hiding something. Why do we not have the drug arrest figures as a running total anyway instead of secret...secret...secret... dam I guess we better release the public's information. Who will he invite for our side?
Wouldn't surprise me if he brought in a professional anti-pot zealot from ONDCP to stand against an inner-city crack addict or something
