City's Plan for Instant Drug Treatment Lags!

On-demand help has long way to go to become reality, despite more funding. San Francisco officials' ambitious plan to provide treatment on demand for substance abusers is far from reaching its goal, despite a major cash infusion over the past three years.
The good news, said Dr. Mitchell Katz, director of The City's Department of Public Health, is that 658 treatment slots for drug and alcohol abusers were created over the past year, bringing the total capacity to 13,046. The bad news is that 1,000 people are on a waiting list to get publicly financed help with their substance abuse problems, and for some that can mean a six-month delay before entering a program.
