The Million Marijuana March is a worldwide event involving people taking to the streets in nearly 200 cities across the globe.According to the organisation's website, marches are taking place in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Hull, Sheffield and Stafford. In London the march, entitled Dance on the Grave of Cannabis Prohibition, will go from Kennington Park to Brockwell Park, in south London, where a festival is being held featuring live music, a speakers tent and food stalls.Across the world marches are taking place in more than 30 countries including the US, New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France.Scotland Yard said this was the fourth time the march had taken place in London.A spokesman said: "Police have been in close consultation with the organisers and they have ensured police that participants will remain within the law during the march."If participants are found smoking cannabis they will be asked to stop. Members of Legalise Cannabis Campaign Scotland will be petitioning on Princes Street to seek more support on Monday. Linda Hendry, LCCS spokeswoman, said: "We want to raise awareness in the fight to legalise cannabis because the present proposal to make it a C class drug does not mean it is legal. "The penalties would only be halved if the law was changed to make it a C class drug." In this country, J-Day rallies will take place in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Auckland organiser Mike Harding says J-Day is about coming out and showing support for cannabis law reform. He says 30 people are arrested every day for cannabis possession, though he claims the drug is safer than alcohol or tobacco. Mr Harding says cannabis and drug use is something which too often is swept under the carpet. He says politicians need to sit up and take notice of the issues surrounding cannabis use.
