High All, I can say that the Chicago Million Marijuana March was an enjoyable day, and let's hope successful. About 2,000 people attended, police were quite evident, and mostly polite, though 3 arrest attempts were made, two of them successful. One was for jaywalking, one (I think) for lighting up at the federal plaza before the march, and another (failed) attempt for smoking during the march. The last case was, I heard, stopped due to the pressure from surrounding persons participating in the march. The gathering began at 11:00AM Central time, and at about Noon the speakers took the stand. We heard persons from the Libertarian Party, the Chicago Greens, the Progressive Party, the ACLU, the Journey for Justice (is that right?), and some others. Some were funny, but most were dead serious. At the federal plaza gathering area, there was a display of the victims of the war on drugs...very moving. There were also tables from NORML, and I think some others. The march was rather awkward, as we had to keep to the sidewalk, but the police blocked intersections as we moved. One note of bad faith were found in the presence of two paddy wagons moving along with the march. Numerous motorists honked and waved in approval. There were several other marches that day in the Windy City. The largest of which was the Polish Constitution Day celebration, which passed by the federal plaza during the speeches. MMM attendee's raised their signs and waved at the entertaining floats and marchers from that parade. They waved back most politely. The march stopped at the Municipal Jail, and said several chants in favor of releasing prisoners of the drug war, then proceeded back to the federal plaza for some live music. More of these would be a good thing. All localities possible. Clear, statements to the locals of what's really at stake. It can make a difference. I forgot 2 mention that the fest will B Cricket Hill (as it should be.) They tried to move it to Soldier Field's parking lot a couple of years ago, & it failed miserably! Everyone who knows and enjoys the fest will always B the Hill. For those who R unaware, the Hill is located Montrose and the lake. Don't drive if U can avoid it. Parking's a pain & the cops just LOVE 2 meet their ticket quotas there! Bike, blade, board or train R your best bet. If U R taking the train, take the red line to Wilson, walk 2 blocks south, & go east 'til u see all of the beautiful people enjoying nature's finest!
