Saturday, May 1, 1999, was expected to be the biggest event in marijuana reform history. For the first time ever, organizers from around the world banded together in a peaceful protest to tell the world to end the War on Drugs and relegalize marijuana... on the same day.
Twenty-five cities held mass protests: Albuquerque, Amsterdam, Auckland, Austin, Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Edinburgh, Johannesburg, London, Los Angeles, Madison, Melbourne, Minneapolis, Montreal, New York, Nimbin, Oslo, Prague, Seattle, San Francisco, Seattle, Tampa, Tucson, Vancouver and Washington D.C.Due to a blanket media blackout on the event details on all 25 or so events are sketchy at best. Here is a rundown the few reports we have received (we will post more news about the event as we receive more reports): ATLANTAAccording to one attendee (named "Stephen") the turnout in Atlanta was lighter than organizers had hoped for because the march had to compete with a very large music fest in the same area. Stephen also said: "The permits needed for concessions were not granted (for whatever reason) and vendors were scarce. Personally, I saw only three guys get cuffed and hauled away. All in all, it was a beautiful day in the park."Stephen also wanted to send a message to those who do choose to attend these events:"While I'm here, may I suggest that more emphasis be placed on conduct while supporting marijuana? If people see a supporter acting like an asshole, then marijuana = assholes. Same thing applies for vulgarity. Please do what you can about this or we don't have a chance. Thanks, Stephen"Click the above link for a video report from Atlanta and the complete article!Thank You High Times!
