San Francisco prosecutors are expressing concern about a marijuana raid carried out at a cannabis club in the city today by federal drug agents. An Oakland club was also raided. Five people were arrested, including the proprietor of the San Francisco club and one person in Canada. San Francisco District Attorney's Office spokesman Fred Gardner said he could supply only a few details, but confirmed that agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration apparently moved in on a Sixth Street club located between Market and Mission streets early this morning.
The agents also raided the Oakland house of Ed Rosenthal, a marijuana book author who was believed to be operating a club from his house, sources said. In November, San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan held a news conference in support of a Northern California doctor whose offices had been raided by DEA agents and specifically warned federal officials to stay away from a city that has for years supported physician-authorized use of medicinal marijuana. "Lay off our marijuana clubs,'' Hallinan said at the time. He said that since the passage of state Proposition 215 five years ago the city's system -- in which seriously ill patients whose doctors feel they can benefit from marijuana to reduce pain or increase appetite receive official identification cards -- is working. But federal officials may take a different view of the situation. In May, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of the Oakland Cannabis Buyers' Cooperative that federal anti-drug laws do not permit an exception for these types of marijuana uses. Oh is it good to see you! It's ok if you blush! I'll keep my mouth shut. I'm actually good at that. My motto is Silence is Golden. FF it is true but Matt is good and he caught them. Great to have a person like Matt on our side.

Shhhhh!...the enemy is listening! (and reading)
FoM, I am very glad that you have filters set...but you may have to change them before too long. Never tell the enemy if what they are doing is working or not...and they do read here; I have the proof:http://www.buzzwordbook.com/essays/god.htmlLet them stew in their ignorant and foolish attempts to mess with us; it's more fun that way...

DankHank
howdy DH!I live in the deep south in the thick of the bible belt. I used to live up near D.C. when I was growing up. I still have some friends up that way so luckily I shouldn't have to fork out for a hotel when I go up there.I have noticed that NORML is having their conference out in San Francisco from 4/18 though 4/20. Although I would enjoy attending that, San Fran is quite the drive from my house.(Even though I have a buddy out there too!)It would be great to meet some of the folks from here out in real life.

Something strange
I am very lucky that Matt Elrod from Mapinc. put a filtering system on my email a long time ago. It dumps a huge amount of email that is spam. I can view what gets filtered without it coming into my email and someone was determined to flood me with a particular email today. It didn't work but if I didn't have this wonderful filter on my email it could have caused me problems. Be careful when you are in your email because I don't know why someone would do that to me.

it's sickening
It just seems the feds have the upper hand. J. Edgar Hoover and his henchmen always had the upper hand. It feels like those days are at hand once again. The same foul spirit and bitterness that tried to deport John Lennon has risen up again. As an American I am embarrassed and ashamed.

Thanks for the update. This is sad but not surprising knowing what type of people are in charge of our country. They want us afraid and maybe soon we will get angry and get pushy. We need money, (not Me or C News) to stop this madness. Hang in there StevePS: Please keep checking in here when you have time. That way we know you are ok.

Looks like a "narcing" in Progress,
Seems that one of these gentlemens partners was a rat and big round-up is ensuing. The troubling part for me is that US seems to be able to reach across border at will anymore! Watch this one close to see what happens to Ken and his wife here as it will show handwriting on wall for rest of us. This stress of "there coming to take me away" is destroying any vestige of family those punk pigs left me. We all feel raped and it happens over and over everytime US wants to show Canada who's boss. Sometime I am so tired that the end seems more like a reward than something to dread. When ones very life is condemded then whats left for him to shelter him from storms? They are getting bolder with each unanswered attack, the day will come when they do come for us all, will any be ready then, can you ever be ready for that terrible day? Steven Tuck

Spread The Word!
The timing of these "terrorist alerts" & the DEA raids is very suspect. They never fail to coincide! We should all send this to everyone we know. We must stand together!

terrorizing the sick
Robbie's thoughts in comment #1 were exactly what came to my mind as well. However, perhaps this will prove to be folley on the part of the DEA. San Francisco had already declared itself a medical marijuana sanctuary essentially. In the case of the LARC we saw that no charges were actually filed by the DEA - thus it's just a smash and grab.Perhaps SF should be pro-active and file suit against Uncle Sam! If it made it to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals they are likely to side with the city given the court's track record. It could make it to the Supreme court on the basis of States Rights rather than medical marijuanna.Steve, FoM, & Everyone: Hang in there. Keep the faith. Actions such as the recent superbowl commercials and raids on the SF clinics have had a powerful effect in the media: It is now unquestionably reasonable for the press to dissent and doubt the effectiveness of the DEA and the War on Some Drugs. Think about how many more articles we are seeing from the big media names saying "Maybe the drug war is outta line..." Think about how many people post here. Think about how many people just lurk and read here. You aren't alone. The fact that 700,000+ people were arrested last year for marijuanna should tell you that there are millions... MILLIONS that think as we do.Somewhere someone mentioned the Washinton D.C. march on April 20th. I invite everyone to try and make it. I will put in the 17 hour drive. This could be the year. Millions could descend on the capitol. Let's make it the year.4-20:02-4The above has a nice palindromic ring to it. 4-20-2002. Hope to see everyone there. :)

The Real Terrorist now is the U.S. Government?
The terrorist attack scheduled for today was carried out by the DEA. Next time we get a warning, we can tell the sick and dying to WATCH OUT!Never thought of it that way...but to think of it, it does seem every time there's a so-called terror attack warning, there's lots of drug busts, etc. Also, it's telling how they scheduled the terror attack warning on Fat Tuesday (big celebration in Philadelphia and other cities too?).You're absolutly right...next time there's a terror alert, the real terrorist to watch out for is the U.S. government itself. Going after medical cannabis users is totally wrong and no matter how much the U.S. government tries to justify their actions saying cannabis has no medical use, they can't; especially in light of the fact that the very same government still grows and supplies several people cannabis for medical use.

The stuff is flying fast and furious today, everybodies being busted everywhere, HOW IN HELL DID PAPER KNOW THIS WAS COMING? Ken Hayes was busted here in Canada also today and all hell is breaking loose, the big round-up is here! I guess I am fixing to be killed by my gov't and just wanted to take a sec to thank all here and to warn all activist to take a vacation from your normal routine because we have no idea how far down chain this is going to go. The day I have dreaded for 5 years is here, we are ALL going to be demonized now and public burnings will be forthcoming soon. FoM be careful as it seem they want us teachers and epostals of truth! I am so sorry to see this day come, the world is no longer anything even close to sane. Someday we will look back on this day with shame as a whole world. Peace, Steve Tuck
