UKIAH Grasping a grocery bag of home-grown marijuana worth about $2,000 that was given back to him by local authorities, Christopher Brown on Thursday triumphantly walked out of the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office to make medical marijuana history.
Brown, a former Willits resident, became the first person in the United States to legally retrieve a personal stash of pot seized by law enforcement.Local drug agents confiscated the half-pound of marijuana during a 1997 raid on Brown's Willits residence and refused to return it even after charges were dropped against him. Brown took his case to the California Supreme Court, which in November upheld a Mendocino County Superior Court judge's order that the marijuana be returned to Brown. The high court agreed that Brown's marijuana use met provisions of voter-approved Proposition 215, which legalized pot use for medicinal purposes."It feels good.
