'Reverend' Plans To Open Joint for Joints

A Winnipeg pot advocate is eager to get things rolling. Chris Dalman, who describes himself as a reverend with the Church of the Universe, believes marijuana use brings enlightenment. He has high hopes of opening a cafe where fellow church members can smoke a joint. The 32-year-old hopes to see patrons smoking pot in his proposed "sanctuary for true believers of cannabis" as early as this spring.
"The casual, recreational user will not be allowed to smoke marijuana in the cafe unless they become a member and prove they are devout and their use of marijuana is a true sacrament in their life," said Dalman, adding the Church of the Universe has 12 clergy members. "The cafe is a mission of the church, rather than a place to hang out and smoke dope." Staff Sgt. John Speirs, of the Winnipeg police drug unit, said he "can't see an organization or business running something like that." COMPLY WITH LAWS "You can't just say, I'm going to do something. Is has to be in compliance with the laws," Speirs said with a chuckle. "There's nothing I'm aware of in (The Controlled Drugs and Substance Act) that permits people to be in possession of an illegal substance for religious reasons." The proposed name of the cafe is a mouthful -- the Cannabis Devout Mission of Humble Hemp Co. Cafe Sanctuary Meeting Place. Dalman, who owns a hemp store at The Forks, said the cafe's menu would include food that patrons can "catch a buzz" from. There would be a separate room where they can enjoy a joint -- "a room sanctioned for the chapel use." Dalman said he'll screen patrons before admitting them to the cafe. To score some dope, patrons must view the plant as a sacrament in their life or a medicinal need, Dalman said. He hopes to have a registered nurse on staff to make the health assessments. Dalman is looking at locations on Corydon Avenue, in Osborne Village and downtown. He's hopeful his plans won't go up in smoke but doesn't expect the opening of an illegal cannabis cafe to go unnoticed. "Any issue that has basically revolutionary implications, there is always a lot of controversy and concern from different levels of community leaders, religiously and politically," said Dalman. Geoff Hughes, of the Manitoba Compassion Club, wants a part in the cannabis cafe project. The 19-member club dispenses marijuana -- without government approval -- to people with serious illnesses. Hughes is hoping the proposed cafe will become the group's "clubhouse." "We're not waiting for the laws to change, we're pressing ahead," said Hughes. Last weekend, a marijuana teahouse in Vancouver was closed down two months after its grand opening. Police arrested two people involved in running the teahouse -- marketed as a place for medicinal pot users certified by Health Canada. Hughes said the Vancouver closure will not deter pot advocates from fighting for the proposed cannabis cafe. He said he's willing to get arrested and fight in court for his cause. "It's not going to stop us," he said. "To challenge the law sometimes is to break it." Note: Catch a buzz at cafe.Source: Winnipeg Sun (CN MB) Author: Katie Chalmers -- Winnipeg SunPublished: January 26, 2002 Copyright: 2002 Canoe Limited Partnership Contact: editor wpgsun.com Website: http://www.fyiwinnipeg.com/winsun.shtmlRelated Articles & Web Site:FTE's Canadian Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/can.htm Medicinal Marijuana Teahouse Shuttered http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread11835.shtmlMarijuana `Teahouse' Opens Today in Vancouver http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread11228.shtml CannabisNews Articles - Canadahttp://cannabisnews.com/thcgi/search.pl?K=canada

Hi p4me
I can't answer the question about the buyer's clubs but I wanted to say I saw about Norway and decriminalization but I haven't found anything in a newspaper as of right now. I've been looking. The same with Pharmos. I'll keep my eyes open.

Dutch Experience
In comment number one that follows I tallked about a link at the Dutch Experience website. Just to remind you that MMJ is for real- http://212.129.240.114/upload/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1627Our fine antiprohibition spokesman, Richard Cowan, is presently in Stockport as mentioned by Cannabinol or Nol, the half owner of the DE, at the DE website. This is because the trial of Colin Davies and the Italian MEP that went to Stockport to protest the f'd up MJ laws will be this Tuesday and the event is going to have to get coverage in the media besides pot-tv. The Italian MEP says more European Parliament members may follow as many recognize that the time for change is long overdue.Vote against all incumbents especially the Compassionate Conservative that lied about respecting state rights in regard to MMJ and all members of Congress.

unrelated stuff
I just read an article at marijuana.com called "Norwegian Government Commission Calls for Decriminalization" dated January 26th at 6:01MST. There are not many post during the weekend so I just wanted to ask a question? What do people like the people that used the services of the Cannabis Resource Center in West Hollywood have to say about the medicinal value of MJ? The federal government is telling them they are criminals because somehow the federal government came to a conclusion that MJ has no medicinal value. Of course we all know that the informed and sensible people realize that the present position is anchored by that "big lie." But why hasn't Congress had any of the patients in to ask them what they think? Telling someone that uses MMJ that it does not help them when that person has an absolute knowledge of the situation has got to be taken as a blatant lie. It would be like a police officer writing me a ticket for not having a motorcycle license when I am driving my car. "Are you guys crazy? This is a Ford Tauris and has four wheels moron?" And the officer replies "Congress has determined that facts are not relevant in issuing violations of the law."I want to know how the American people are letting these bastards get away with this big lie. I had to sell a piece of property to have money since I decided that if the government wants to hassle me in my effort to gain employment that I will participate in the economy as little as possible. It took three trips with an hour talking time going and then coming. I won one convert to voting for change. We talked about the Schedule 1 lie and I gave him an account that I read at the Dutch Experience website about a woman that came in a wheelchair and hit her foot on the doorway when she came in. The account told of how she had to fight back the tears of pain. Now the Dutch Experience does not sell MMJ because of all the Bullshi* the prohibitionist threw at them in the recoil effort to push back the changing tide. Anyway someone did furnish this person with some medicine and he soon heard her laughing and saw her get up and walk around and she went home and did some housework. He was from Ohio and I told him about how Cannabisnews had a story of how the politicians in Ohio had broken the law by using public funds and office to block a ballot iniative and even he said "Whoa."We are winning and I will never quit the fight for change until MJ is legalized. The prohibitionist think their stone wall is built on a slippery slope. I say MJ should be totally legal and there is no chance in hell that I will change my mind at 48 years old because I once believed in our system of laws and government. Now I know better and am well informed of the issue. So I say this. I do not care about the expensive wall that has been built. The children will be paying for the hundreds of billions spent to control MJ over the last 32 years in particular. The chronic pain that goes on because Congess and our Puppet of the Rich do not want people planting seeds for medicine continues foes on. I am not for tearing down the wall as the prohibitionists have worked since 1937 to build it. I am for replacing all those that gaurd the wall. Talk and reason is one thing, but voting is the way to change things. Did you ever hear about the salesmans contest where the loser gets to find a new job?Vote against all incumbents and try to understand that when the power structure realizes that we the voters do not want them to repeat the big lie anymore and are willing to send all of them home for a whole new set, things will change. The May primaries are only 13 weeks away and in one day we could change the attitude of our elected officials if you would just send the message that we do not respect them or their lies that they let stand. Vote against all incumbents all the way down to dogcatcher and ask your board of elections for a feature that lets you eliminate all incumbents from the electronic voting list by pushing one button. MJ is not the only issue of course. By voting against an incumbent you are allowing a better chance of a newcomer victory. The odds are so stacked against the nonincumbents that many people do not even attempt a run.
