Talking Grow-Ops at Elementary School

An elementary school classroom: it's the last place one would expect to hear talk about marijuana grow operations, but in the Collingwood area of Vancouver some young children are talking about just that.Chris Taulu of the Collingwood community policing office says the issue came up when some grade one students were talking about what their fathers do for a living.
"The little girl said ‘my dad is a really good gardener’," said Taulu. "'Except that we can’t go downstairs and see it because the door is locked.'"'He is so good he has about four or five houses he gardens with’."In another case, a young student inadvertently let it slip that his dad was operating a grow-op. It happened during a science experiment when the group was planting bean sprout seeds. The young student told his classmates the proper way to grow plants is with big lights and a tarp just like his dad does at home in the basement. The teacher heard the story and promptly notified police. For school officials in the Collingwood neighbourhood it's a new problem that's particularly difficult to deal with."The hardest thing is that ... we are never told," said Graham Bruce Elementary School principal Patty Neibel. "The child doesn’t register and say ‘by the way I live in a grow-op’."At the school, staff had one instance of a child living in a grow-op. But this was not a case of the student unknowingly telling on his/her parents. "A child stopped coming to school and we found out through a phone call that the familyhouse had burned down," said Neibel. "Later, we were told by police that it was a grow-op."Authorities say it's one thing for people to run the risk of operating a grow-op, but it's another to knowingly endanger the lives of their children."It is disgusting," said Vancouver Police Department spokesperson Det. Scott Driemel. "We all know now from all the evidence that grow-ops give off a huge amount of carbon dioxide, there are all sorts of noxious chemicals involved and there is the danger from other criminals."Vancouver police say over the last year officers executed more than 600 search warrants on grow-ops in the city. The total street value of pot seized was $158 million.Source: Canada.comPublished: Monday, January 21, 2002Copyright: 2002 Global BCWebsite: http://www.canada.com/Contact: http://www.canada.com/aboutus/contactus/Related Articles & Web Site:FTE's Canadian Linkshttp://freedomtoexhale.com/can.htmDecriminalize Marijuana, Vancouver Mayor Sayshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread11310.shtmlSenators Pay a Visit To The Compassion Club http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread11304.shtmlThe Taxman's Lost Cash Crophttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread10531.shtml

ALF Reaches Goal!
Observer, could Orwell see the future or what? That book scares the sh*t out of me!Unrelated news: Jim Babka,Perry Willis,Harry Browne & the American Liberty Foundation have raised enough money to begin running ads on cable television. The first series(3 different ads) will run on CNN on Saturday,Feb.2nd & will deal with gun ownership. If the ALF can raise more money they will also deal with other topics regarding personal liberties.See the ads:

nice one!
"Go water the plants boy!" I love it! The media coverage is what really bums me out. Notice how they say, the teacher immediately called the police. That's it. Nice and tidy. Evil stopped in it's tracks.Too bad they won't cover the hearings when the kid is taken from his parents. Nobody will be around to record the kid's tearful pleas to let Mommy and Daddy out of jail. The kid's probably old enough to realize it's his fault his parents were sent to prison - I wonder how that guilt will weigh on his young mind? They won't mention the total cost to the government of prosecuting and jailing the kid's parents, then paying for foster care for the kids.

CO2 Production
Two common methods of C02 enrichment are releasing the compressed gas from a tank with a timer, or using a CO2 generator that burns propane or natural gas and is optimized for C02 generation as opposed to heat(although they put out quite a lot of heat, even so.)http://www.greenair.com/product.htm

Whats worse?
I have seen more parents endangering childrens lives by having a few drinks than by "growing marijuana." I remember when I was young (too young to know the word marijuana even) My cousin lived next door and all the time his father would holler to him into the living room from the kitchen table (mind you the table was in REACH of the refrigerator) "JOHN GET ME ANOTHER BEER!" I was always disgusted by this as we couldn't even watch a tv show without being interupted. Now we would never ever holler to our kids "HEY ROLL ME ANOTHER JOINT SON!" or "GO WATER THE PLANTS BOY" That is UNHEARD of in our society. How many people really lock up their refrigerator to keep their kid out of the beer??? At least this person LOCKED their grow room. YOU call that ENDANGERMENT??? I call that RESPONSIBLE USE.FREE THE WEED OR BAN THE BOOZE ....AGAIN

CO2 Production
Do growers usually obtain large CO2 tanks, or do they make the C02 chemically? If so, what chemicals are used to produce the C02?

denounced its parents to the Thought Police
With those children, he thought, that wretched woman must lead a life of terror. Another year, two years, and they would be watching her night and day for symptoms of unorthodoxy. Nearly all children nowadays were horrible. What was worst of all was that by means of such organizations as the Spies they were systematically turned into ungovernable little savages, and yet this produced in them no tendency whatever to rebel against the discipline of the Party. On the contrary, they adored the Party and everything connected with it. The songs, the processions, the banners, the hiking, the drilling with dummy rifles, the yelling of slogans, the worship of Big Brother -- it was all a sort of glorious game to them. All their ferocity was turned outwards, against the enemies of the State, against foreigners, traitors, saboteurs, thought-criminals. It was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children. And with good reason, for hardly a week passed in which The Times did not carry a paragraph describing how some eavesdropping little sneak -- 'child hero' was the phrase generally used -- had overheard some compromising remark and denounced its parents to the Thought Police. -- 1984, George Orwell

CO2
Is not dangerous anyway, unless you are in a sealed space and the O2 levels drop.FOM, you are quite right that you want to keep the CO2 confined to the grow room, mostly because it costs money to generate. This is just more propaganda. They are probably confusing CO2 with CO, which is deadly but doesn't come from grow ops, it comes out your exhaust pipe.I always notice that when they talk about fire danger they are talking about illegal hydro bypasses- smart, small, non-criminal growers just pay the bill, are no danger to themselves, their families, or others, and contribute to the economy. Finally, those children don't live in a grow op, they live in a house with an indoor garden. The equipment and techniques are exactly the same no matter what you are growing, so how does it become so dangerous when the plant happens to be Cannabis?

Co2
If a grower has Co2 in their grow room why would they want it to go outside of the grow room? It wouldn't help the garden then. That's my opinion. They don't mention that though.

Impressions
True, aocp, he didn't say the 'plants' gave off the carbon dioxide, but to the uneducated (where this article is aimed), that is the impression that comes across. He is, after all, a 'trusted expert' in the publics' eyes, and has only our best interests at heart. (Cough) Why would he lie? (Cough cough)A cardinal rule in advertising (i.e. propaganda) -
"Impression is everything."

No guys...
just playing devil's advocate here, but he didn't say it was the plants, it's the grow-op. IOW, grow-ops usually have artificial CO2 pumped in to aid in the plants maturation processes. Now, he does conviently forget that the plants then use the CO2 and release O2, but we're talking about a narc here. Fast and loose with the truth, ya know? The teacher that immediately went to the pigs disgusts me. Such concern for a child that they knew absolutely nothing about their home life other than that their father was a good gardener. Let's follow this poor child's academic life from now on, shall we?

SAVE THE CHILDREN!! SAVE THE CHILDREN!!!
Anyone notice how whenever someone cant think of anything good to say that actually makes sense, they make the vague threat that somehow growing a PLANT will kill your children? No wonder we're killing the rain forests and urbanizing every single square foot of land we can, those evil plants are trying to kill our children. All those science classes that told you that plants actually converted CO2 into O2 were all just lies by treehugging hippie fascists that were trying to make you believe plants were good for you. Don't worry tho, Big Brother will make sure all those nasty plants get eradicated and you get all the healthy by products of a modern civilatzion (medicines that make you sicker, factories that give off HEALTHY waste products like all those ones in Texas, and dont forget to watch the news at 11 for even more good things brought to you by our 'leaders')Gah, what ever happened to journalists that reported the TRUTH?? Oh wait, i forgot, Hearst proved that people dont care about the truth, just what sounds good.Do the world a favor, start growing a new plant today.

Fire
Also, again and again (remember kids, the more you repeat something, the more true it becomes), we are warned that a hydro operation will almost surely result in your house burning down. And you and your children will die in your beds, as you have been overcome by the carbon dioxide fumes from the plants. I think we live in Bizarro world.

I went what! Plants give off oxygen. That's why gardening is healthy. We human beings should be made illegal by his standards because we give off Carbon Dioxide! Duh!

Plants give off carbon dioxide? umm ok whatever you say marijuana is a bad evil plant so it must be able to do things in reverse. Even the carbon dioxide enrichment is miniscule.Stupidity abounds
