City of West Hollywood Declares Itself a Sanctuary

The City Council has declared West Hollywood a "sanctuary" for medical marijuana use. Copies of its resolution were sent to federal law enforcement officials who continue to conduct raids in California, although the state's voters legalized medicinal marijuana use five years ago. "Where are the federal government's priorities?" Councilman Jeffrey Prang asked after Monday's passage of the resolution he sponsored.
When faced with bio-terrorist activities across the country, why is the Republican Justice Department focusing its attention on this issue? The sanctuary resolution is only symbolic, with federal law outlawing marijuana use still superseding state law. The resolution's adoption follows an Oct. 25 raid in which federal agents shut down a West Hollywood cannabis club. The action was denounced by city officials and a representative of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which handles law enforcement in West Hollywood. Other federal actions in recent months included raiding a Ventura County garden operated by patients, and seizure of medical records from a Northern California doctor who is a prominent medical marijuana proponent. The West Hollywood center, which opened in 1996, provides marijuana to patients suffering from AIDS, epilepsy, glaucoma, cancer and other serious illnesses, said center spokesman Scott Imler. To receive the marijuana, patients must be referred by their physicians and undergo a screening process. Seven other states have followed California's lead in legalizing marijuana for medical use, but under federal law marijuana remains illegal for cultivation, sales and use of any sort. Very nice
Very nice comments. Cannabis is such a happy little pleasant plant. I can't think of profound ways of saying that so I said what came into my mind. Cannabis is a beautiful, aromatic and not pushy plant. It isn't like drugs that yell come take me ha ha and you'll wind up all strung out but she waits and knows that she can help and demands nothing. What's so evil about that?

Leary about that one
Dr. Timothy Leary said that cannabis iself is sentient. Cannabis is concious of its own existence. I believe it to be a matter of fact.

Hats off to West Hollywood!
Hello everyone! I've been so inspired by Cannabis News that I've been concentrating on speaking to the unconverted. Educating Cannabis users is a fascinating pastime. Does anyone here realize the lies that cannabis users accept from the opposition. Once you enlightened them, as I have been here, by you all, then you can move on to people who have no experience with Cannabis. Prohibition has made Cannabis a 'hip' thing compared to 10-20 years ago when people just switched to more easily hidden pastimes, you know what those are. But thanks to prohibition, everybody is either informed, somewhat informed or completely misled. So events like this (W. Hoolywood sanctuary) are natural as Cannabis is driven underground. And it isn't something that is comfortable there. Why? Because some of the best things about cannabis are: The aroma, whether ignited or fresh, is impossible to disguise, the texture, sticky, a bit messy with preparation, all says Just try and hide me from the world! The bright green color, and highly reflective crystals demand attention. Isn't it a bit strange that something so good, so sweet, so sticky, so healing, so euphoric, so interesting is made criminal so as to prevent sick and dying people from being relieved of their pain. If hell exists, it is right here on earth where we are supposedly our brothers keepers, as in prison guards, and not in the 'brotherly way' the statement was meant to be taken. If heaven exists, it is also right here on earth, where fresh air, clean water, beautiful skies, mountains and plains abound, topped with cannabis of all varieties to to give us food, fuel, fibre, medicine and a euphorant to enjoy it all with. The say Heaven is in your mind and hearth. Thats where I live, what planet would you rather be on if not this one? I suppose Cannabis exists on other planets like earth if it exists here. I hope so. Maybe we came back in this lifetime to make sure cannabis hemp and its role in the earths exixtence wasn't lost and buried. Interesting thought, any comments?

Welcome to Cannabis News. I understand your fear because I live in a state of fear everyday. Our home's should be our castles and should be a sanctuary but we know it isn't so. We understand what is happening but the average person hasn't seen what happens until they become one of the undesirable class of people and then they find out real quick. It can be any of a number of things that makes someone undesirable to our political leaders but everyone is vulnerable. The right wing would just love to lock up and throw away the key many different groups and I hope it stops and doesn't get any worse but I can't help but feel it will continue with this Republican Adminstration.

The grass is greener on my side of the fence.
I read the comments posted here most everyday but rarely respond one way or the other. My take on this issue is the association it has with Mcarthyism. I feel like I have to stay in the closet about it or face unpleasant consequences. It is ironic that while I am serving as a Crime Watch co-captain in my neighborhood, I am also indulging in my favorite pasttime behind closed doors. It's really none of my neighbors business anyway, but some would feel it is their business to protect the rest of the neighborhood from me, a dangerous criminal. I already get stereotyped anyway because I wear a ponytail. I try not to draw attention to myself but some people feel that I need extra scrutinization. Anyway, I am on your side and shout out, "Right on!" or "Those bastards!" quite often when I read here. I vote Libertarian, pay my taxes, raised a family (3 daughters, a 30 year old and twins who are seniors in college) and feel that I have a certain entitlement to be left alone as long as I am not hurting anyone else. OK, who's with me?

My son lived in West Hollywood and it is a gay community. When I first arrived there I felt so strange. My son said lets walk downtown and I said ok. We walked and went to the video store and where my son worked. It was called The Greenery. I met the nicest people. I soon didn't feel strange and found myself comfortable. The experience of my time in West Hollywood was one of learning and understanding and losing judgmentalism. I think I grew emotionally from facing my fears then almost any other experience I've had in life and that says a lot for me to say that.

I think alot of people are dazed, and confused
....after all,,,these last few months have been remarkably extraordinary....those who dont really know what's going on,,probably dont really want to know,,,and those who do know whats going on,, are awestruck,to the point of speechlessness......
I like the fact that West Hollywood is doing this "sanctuary" thing.....for those who may not know,West Hollywood has a significant gay community,,and alot of gay people tend to be admirably outspoken, and intellectually agile. They are also quite good at standing up,and defending their rights...The gay community is an excellent allie,in the cause of Marijuana decriminalization. ...I think angry homosexuals make John Ashcroft nervous, and confused.....It's easier to lock up an angry Hippie, than a pissed off gay person........ Bravo West Hollywood.......dddd

I don't know where everyone is. I'm thinking people are getting tired of the news because the way our world is now since 9-11. Things are different all you have to do is turn on CNN. I don't get any news groups because I don't have good luck with email it's always so buggy but maybe people are talking in those type groups. I'm not really sure.
