SAN FRANCISCOAbout 300 people marched in a candlelight vigil on Saturday night to remember ``Brownie Mary'' Rathbun, whose activism gave momentum to the medical marijuana movement.
Mary Jane Rathbun was 77 when she died last Saturday of undisclosed causes. She co-founded the now-defunct San Francisco Cannabis Buyers Club and was arrested three times, twice agreeing to perform hundreds of hours of community service by spending the time with AIDS patients. ``Brownie Mary will someday, in my opinion, be remembered by history as the Florence Nightingale of the medical marijuana movement,'' San Francisco District Attorney Terence Hallinan said at the vigil in the city's Castro district. Ms. Rathbun was fixture at San Francisco General Hospital in the early days of the AIDS epidemic, preparing and delivering marijuana-laced baked goods to sick people to relieve their nausea and pain. ``For a long time, nobody knew what AIDS was back in the beginning of the 80s, and she was going into situations where we weren't really sure how AIDS was transmitted,'' said Ms. Rathbun's friend, Amy Casey. ``She was just right in there, going from bedside to bedside, giving her brownies.'' God Bless Brownie Mary and May Her Spirit Live On!
