UCI scientists discovered that a marijuana-like chemical suppresses the munchies, countering decades of informal research into a kindred compound by undergraduate students everywhere.UCI's research, conducted on laboratory rats, was published today in the journal Nature, and scientists hope the findings will lead to a treatment for obesity.
The paper's co-author, University of California, Irvine, pharmacology professor Daniele Piomelli, said oleylethanolamide, or OEA, a naturally occurring molecule in the same family as marijuana's active ingredient, reduced appetite when injected into rats."The actual marijuana-like compound is a food stimulator," Piomelli said. "They come from the same class of compound but act in an opposite fashion."The next step, researchers said, is to test OEA in obese rats.Rats injected with the chemical did not get high or feel so much as a tingle in the cannabinoid receptors of their brains. But unlike other diet-suppressing compounds that can trigger agitation, the marijuana kin seemed to cause little worry for the furry subjects. At high doses, OEA had the same calming effect that its brethren chemical has been known to create in humans."We don't understand it fully," Piomelli said. "But if you crank up the dose, you see an inhibition of motor activity." Note: UCI study finds pot-like chemical suppresses appetite, may fight obesity. Thank You Dr. Russo
I was trying to think of something witty to call you but I can't think of anything. I'll blame it on old age, stml or brain fog. Hey, they are good excuses sometimes! LOL!
