Marijuana has Numerous Effects on Teens

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in this country. During the last six years, we have seen a doubling in use among 8th graders and significant increases among high school individuals. The physical effects of marijuana use, particularly on developing adolescents, can be substantial. Marijuana contains one of the most destructive chemicals found in any drug. This chemical is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
THC can stay in a person's body form three weeks to four months. It can harm an individual's memory along with their ability to learn and understand. Regular smoking can very quickly and slowly cause the user not to have any motivation. Marijuana adversely affects the user's immune system, heart, brain and lungs. The most frequent myth I hear from adolescents is that marijuana is safer for their bodies than cigarettes. With each "toke", marijuana smokers inhale more than 150 cancer-causing substances (cigarettes have 43 known carcinogens) and nearly twice as much tar as they would from a tobacco cigarette. Studies have shown that someone who smokes five joints per week may be taking in as many cancer-causing chemicals as a person who smokes a pack of cigarettes every day. Not only does this affect the respiratory system; it also impairs the ability of T-cells in the lungs' immune defense system to fight off some infections. Many pot smokers have more frequent chest colds and dry hacking coughs.Another misconception many people have is that marijuana is not physically addicting. Although individuals don't die from marijuana withdrawal, this does not mean that it isn't both psychologically and physically addicting. Withdrawal can cause flu-like symptoms along with irritability, tremor, anxiety and sleeplessness. These symptoms are usually mild and last for three to four days.Marijuana usage also harms the brain and leads to impaired short-term memory, perception, judgment and motor skills. Perhaps most noticeable to others is that a pot smokers mind is cloudy, their thoughts do not flow smoothly. This is because THC causes a dense material to clog the tiny gaps between nerve cells in the brain, making communication between these cells very difficult. In males, marijuana reduces the levels of the male hormone testosterone. Boys between the ages of 10 and 20 years especially need this hormone because it helps them develop into physically mature men. Furthermore, researchers have found abnormalities in the spermatozoa of heavy smokers. Studies are being done to find out if these can fertilize and egg; therefore causing birth defects. In females, the testosterone level increases. This may cause women to develop dark body hair, facial hair and acne. Because human eggs are present in women from birth, the eggs are vulnerable to damage from prolonged marijuana use. Since THC can accumulate in the reproductive tissues, this can cause problems for a developing fetus because it is still in danger of being harmed by active ingredients in THC. It is also known to interfere with cell division, a process basic to development. This may cause symptoms similar to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). These symptoms include small size, varying degrees of mental retardation and abnormalities of the limbs. While current marijuana usage has increased by high school seniors, the proportion of those who believe it is harmful has dropped dramatically. Marijuana is clearly a harmful drug that poses a threat to our children at a critical point in their development. If you have any questions about drugs, or how to talk to your children about drug abuse, there are many resources available to you in your community. Angry letters...
I sent the newspaper an angry letter 2 days ago about Ms. Agostine's ignorance. (I did this in about 40 min. and didn't revise much. Sorry for any type-o's, grammer, spelling, etc.) I think I set them straight...take a look:Daily Press:
I just finished reading this article and am offended by Ms. Agostine's ignorance towards THC and cannabis. First of all, I do not see her references anywhere. She obviously made much of this article up. Another thing, the "facts" she states are outdated propaganda that have been misproven time and time again.
There are several flaws in the article. One is when Ms. Agostine states, "[Marijuana] can harm an individual's memory along with their ability to learn and understand."
I understand why she thinks this, but it is wrong. Marijuana's dramatic effects on memory and learning ability is stopped aproximately 4 hours after consumption. Another thing is her "fact" that Marijuana adversely affects the user's immune system, heart, brain and lungs. Except for the lungs, there is no perminant damage done to the body. The adverse effects of marijuana smoke on the lungs is are small.
Marijuana IS safer than both alcohol and cigarettes combined. Marijuana smoke won't lead to blocked airways or emphysema, nor will smoking marijuana decrease lung capacity. In addition, there has never been even one lethal overdose of cannabis in recorded history, nor has there been any deaths directly related to marijuana.
Another claim the writer makes is that cannabis is physically addicting. Not to mention that there is only a mild psychological withdrawl, this psysical addiction claim is an all out lie!
Again, I must state that her claim that marijuana usage also harms the brain and leads to impaired short-term memory, perception, judgment and motor skills is misleading. These effects are temporary and wear off a few hours after consumption.
There is no evidence to suggest that "marijuana reduces the levels of the male hormone testosterone," nor is there any evidence to support that there are any birth defects caused by dope-smoking parents. Additionally, there is absolutely no evidence that marijuana increases testosterone in women.
The person who wrote this article is a "Certified Prevention Professional" who does not state who certified her as a "professional." I am very upset about this misleading article.Unlike this "professional," I will give you references:Marijuana Use in College Students, H. G. Pope & D. Really, does even the person who wrote that article serious?. I've been smoking cannabis for 2 years almost every night before going to sleep, it relaxes me a lot and I love the way senses change when smoking; most of the time when I'm high I just listen or compose music.Sometimes when I run out of cannabis I am one, two weeks, maybe a month without smoking. Only addiction is psychological; I've never felt anything because of stopping consuming it. For me, cannabis is just another way to look out at reality, a way that sometimes pleases me, a way sometimes I don't like. Not to mention british studies on multiple sclerosis. Not to mention it's effects on headaches (aspirines suck ;) ). Not to mention the studies conducted by the israeli scientist that discovered THC that prove cannabis prevents cancer in a 50% degree on rats... I still remember one time watching on TV a DEA 'scientist' talking about cannabis, and that he said that "yep, studies on this years reveal that the worst effects on cannabis are the short-term ones". Short-term ones? Beeing stoned? Stop joking with us, LEGALIZE!!!

New Strains in works, who wants to market them?
Hell Frank we are even working on a strain to make penis's bigger as well as breast, then all I need to do is find the gene to transfer to the anti's that would cause them to grow a heart. This woman has obviously never read any of the hundreds of peer reviewed research papers that exist, this is like me saying that bottled water leads to bigotry and a general indifference to those who are less fortunate. The pigs probably did me a favor by chasing me out of a country where the media can ignore legitimate stories about cannabis and then dish out this tripe as if it was the gospel. This all falls under the gov'ts big lie theory of the bigger the lie then the louder they holler it until eventually the Amerikans with their heads in the sand accept it as the status quo. As this situaion gets worse it has become a comedy of errors, of which the closer THEY come to losing then the more desperate they will become and the bigger and louder the lies also so these stories really represent an admission of serious problems for the anti's. We here in BC are conglomerating our forces and closing ranks, We are in the process of folding three seed companies into one, under new medical auspices and we are opening a sales floor/ coffeeshop in Vancouver this mounth by Hastings St., address to come here next week! This is something whose time has come and if they try to beef us then I will finally go public about my 1.6 million dollar(US) donation of seeds to Health Canada in July 2001. I have watched enough games played about this to last me a thousand lifetimes and the suffering and ignorance continues to grind some of our lives and dreams into dust. Quid Pro Quo, Leave us be or I will plaster this in every paper in North America! Steven Tuck

Like Cowan would say, "Bad Journalism"
//With each "toke", marijuana smokers inhale more than 150 cancer-causing substances (cigarettes have 43 known carcinogens) and nearly twice as much tar as they would from a tobacco cigarette//I would like to see that study, cause it would be the only one to exist and false as hell. There are no, that is ZERO proven cancer causing agents in marijuana.//Many pot smokers have more frequent chest colds and dry hacking coughs.//This is also very false, I have been smoking pot for 10 years and smoke about ¼ oz a day. (That’s around 8 joints a day, if you didn’t know). I use to smoke cigarettes and have given them up over a year ago. I use to hack and cough all the time from smoking cigarettes and I would feel like shit if I didn’t smoke. I only smoked less than half a pack of cigarettes a day. Now that I have quit, I have NOT been sick have not had any breathing or chest problems, I can work out and feel totally refreshed. The only people I know that have breathing problems are tobacco smokers.
I like to go for long bike rides around a lake where I live and it’s always a treat to fire-up some kind bud after a great ride. The only problem from marijuana smoke is that the schwag weed that goes around probably has got mold and other prohibition problems related to it. If marijuana were legal a person would only need a couple puffs off of some regulated, non chemical/pesticide laced, mold free, clean herb. But no, people go buying pounds and pounds of the commercial low grade weed. I will agree that marijuana SMOKING is not good for your health, but the key word is SMOKING. Marijuana’s toxic level is beyond nil and only estimated. //Another misconception many people have is that marijuana is not physically addicting. Although individuals don't die from marijuanba withdrawal, this does not mean that it isn't both psychologically and physically addicting. Withdrawal can cause flu-like symptoms along with irritability, tremor, anxiety and sleeplessness. These symptoms are usually mild and last for three to four days.//Marijuana is not physically addicting, I can go with or without and not have any physical withdraw problems, now when I quit smoking cigarettes that hurt for a while, and now I’ve stopped caffeine intake and I have physical withdraws from not drinking coffee or a soda at certain times (I get headaches and tired). Marijuana is mentally addicting to the fact that I have made it a habit and I enjoy the soothing, mind relaxing properties that I take pleasure in on a daily basis. You take the internet away from some people or even their computer and they are going to fell irritable, tremors, anxiety because you have taken something away that was a constant habit. //Marijuana usage also harms the brain and leads to impaired short-term memory, perception, judgment and motor skills. Perhaps most noticeable to others is that a pot smokers mind is cloudy, their thoughts do not flow smoothly. This is because THC causes a dense material to clog the tiny gaps between nerve cells in the brain, making communication between these cells very difficult.//I just can’t believe how awful this article keeps getting. Studies that have been going on since the 70’s have proved time and time again that marijuana PROTECTS the brain. Marijuana (THC and the other cannabinoids) are anti-oxidants, stress relieving, pressure relieving and also protect the brain from poisones toxins that can be released from head injury. THC is not a dense material that clogs tiny gaps anywhere in the brain. YOUR brain has RECEPTERS that are made to work with cannabinoids and the consumption of marijuana adds different processes to the currently active process. It does change the communication between the cells but does not make it difficult. It makes changes that can cause a better perception and clearer thinking. It can be used for self well feeling. It can be used for artistic enhancement to a bland consistent thought process.//In males, marijuana reduces the levels of the male hormone testosterone. Boys between the ages of 10 and 20 years especially need this hormone because it helps them develop into physically mature men. Furthermore, researchers have found abnormalities in the spermatozoa of heavy smokers. Studies are being done to find out if these can fertilize and egg; therefore causing birth defects.

If you have any questions about drugs, or how to talk to your children about drug abuse, there are many resources available to you in your community. When you have no credit then who is going to listen when you actually might be right.//Sandy Agostine is a Certified Prevention Professional and has worked as an Alcohol and Other Drug Counselor for the past 23 years. boobs..
being male, i have a fondness for mammary glands(human)...if pot actually grew boobs, many male sinators and congressdummies would be encouraging their spouses to smoke up...a large percentage of the XX type homo sapiens would be writing congress frequently...the number of plastic surgeons would decline precipitously if this were so...unfortunately, it ain't so...my wife smokes 3-6 pounds per year(34b)...i smoked for 25 years...my chest matches the rest of me(fluffy, but definitely male, normal)...if we could find a strain that DOES do this(you guys listening up in B.C.?) legalization would happen very rapidly as all those male prosecutors, politicians, cops, and average citizens were HAMMERED by their underendowed wives and girlfriends...i find this anti cannabis argument to be hilarious...and i've heard it said in all seriousness by idiots waaaay too many times...

Blind Ignorance
Sandy Agostine is clearly an astute researcher. She has managed to drege up every rumor about THC that has ever been utter. I wonder if she also believes that one can go blind by masterbating.Hey Sandy, I smoke regularly and have for my adult life. I am 35 years old. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Biochemistry with high honors. I currently work as a software consultant.Occasionally, I don't smoke anything for a week or two. I experinence no flu like symptoms when I stop, but I do have some trouble sleeping. Nothing a millligram of melatonin can't take care of. Also, I am in excellent physical health. I can climb Pike's Peak in 7 hours: No hacking no coughing. The funniest quote from this piece is:"This is because THC causes a dense material to clog the tiny gaps between nerve cells in the brain, making communication between these cells very difficult."I have never heard this one before. I challege her to produce any legitimate study that supports this statement. If this was true I would be about as coherent as Ron Regan by now.

Legalize it for the kids sake
This article is proof enough to make marijuana a legal substance. It is easier for teenagers to purchase marijuana than it is for them to purchase alcohol. By making it legal it puts the drug into legitimate hands and decreases the chances for teenagers to obtain it. We can regulate like alcohol and tobacco and provide an age limit for retailers to obide by. Being illegal puts it into perverted street dealers hands who will sell to anyone and their dog.

I was hoping to merely read and try to ignore this article. Since you asked, its content is nothing but unadulterated bovine exrement. There is not a fact within it that withstands scientific scrutiny. As such, it is propaganda, not journalism, and will serve to increase the cynicism of our unbelieving youth and increase their desire to partake of cannabis.

Sandy Agostine must be having boom boom with a Federal type official butt head.I write a lot of letters and this is the one that is difficult, 'cause it has such a thorough amount of bull.It must be calculated, since a smaller LTE is more likely to be accepted, and a sm one doesn't cover all the compost.Still, this level of debunctness, is a move in our favor. IT IS GOING TO CREATE ANOTHER CHIP OFF THE WALL. They shoot themsleves in the foot and then the brain.

Rainbow Farm
I do not know if it has been reported here, but Rainbow Farm is like the next county over from me and the other day on the news they were showing a protest in front of the courthouse (not very many people actually, but...) The protest was because Rolland Rohm's parents have been denied visitation of rolland's son. Just wanted to add that. There was also an editorial in last nights paper the Herald Palladium, which spoke of the case and the lawsuit. Sorry if I posted on the wrong topic.....

This needs a reply
Dear Sirs,Propaganda of any sort in a free country is objectionable at any time. Ms. Agostines’ diatribe against cannabis is a perfect example of self-serving propaganda in action. She very conveniently forgets that in 1999 the prestigious Institute of Medicine, commissioned to examine the issue of medical efficacy of marijuana, concluded that each and every one of the claims made by marijuana prohibitionist people like her were false.False…as in lie. As in self-serving lie. As in engaging in what the United States government has been doing about cannabis for the last 65 years. At this very moment in Great Britain, trials have been concluded concerning the medical efficacy of cannabis. Their results? That Multiple Sclerosis and spinal injury patients both reported an 80% improvement in their quality of life and coincidental reduction in pain. So much for the US government's claim that cannabis remains in Schedule 1 staus for not having medical usefulness.I cannot blame Ms. Agostine for attempting to feather her nest by drumming up business for her practice. Lord knows, there’s plenty of poor souls hooked on hard drugs who may need her help. Hard drugs, like alcohol and nicotine, for example; ask any addict of them about their attempts to quit cold-turkey. But to attempt to include cannabis users as part of a governmental and non-governmental organization scheme to fatten their wallets by offering wholly unnecessary ‘treatment’ of non-existent ‘marijuana addicts’ is only too transparent. And to deliberately try to use hackneyed and disproven governmental propaganda as the basis of her rationale is intellectually dishonest.Sincerely,
(Me)

I agree.
In females, the testosterone level increases. This may cause women to develop dark body hair, facial hair and acne.Anything to say about that FoM?I know a lot of girls who smoke all the time. They have the same feminine qualities as any other girl. I've actually found that I am usually more attracted to girls who smoke, both physically and emotionally. The ONLY argument I would find realistic in this article is that the front-right lobe of the brain sometimes doesn't develop as well in young people who begin smoking before the age of 16 AND who smoke very heavily before this age. Motivation is different from person to person.. Most of it is based off personality.
