Operators of a medical marijuana clinic raided by federal agents blasted the action Friday as a "death sentence" for people who use the facility. Drug Enforcement Administration agents searched the Los Angeles Cannabis Resource Center Thursday afternoon, seizing computers, financial documents, 400 marijuana plants and medical records of some 3,000 current and former patients, said Scott Imler, resident of the resource center.
"This action is effectively a death sentence for patients all across Los Angeles County," Imler said. "Our immediate concerns are our 960 patients who have no place else to go for marijuana." The center, which has been open since 1996, provides marijuana to patients suffering from AIDS, epilepsy, glaucoma, cancer and other serious illnesses, he said. To receive the marijuana, patients must be referred by their physicians and undergo a screening process. The raid is the latest in an ongoing battle between states and federal courts over the medical use of marijuana. Eight states including California have passed legislation allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes only. In May, the Supreme Court upheld a 1970 law that says marijuana has no medical benefits. That ruling was cited in the search warrant, which allowed officers to look for evidence of the manufacture of marijuana and the possession of the drug with intent to distribute. "It is a felony violation of federal law to cultivate, distribute or possess with intent to distribute marijuana," said U.S. Attorney John S. Gordon in a written statement. At a press conference on Friday, Imler was joined by members of the West Hollywood City Council and a representative of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who both expressed support for the resource center. "Our city is going to stand with our residents and this club," said Councilman John Duran, who also provides legal representation for the center. "These people will be forced once again into the streets to deal with drug dealers." Sheriff's Capt. Lynda Castro said she was disappointed when she heard about the raid because the department has worked hard over the past five years to be understanding and sensitive to the issue. "This is going to hurt a significant population in this community," she said. "I respect them for doing it, for operating a significant service. To turn around and have them targeted is a hard pill to swallow." Marlene Rasnick, who suffers from ovarian cancer, urged her fellow patients to protest the federal government's action against the center. "Medical marijuana made it possible for me to sit in my garden and enjoy my friends," she said. "If the federal government wants to say life is over, I don't accept that." Complete Title: Staff of W. would it be legal for me to post things i find in the bee?i just finished several phone calls, including the L.A. times, my congressman's office and the offices of both of california's U.S. senators...in each case i expressed my extreme disappointment with their inaction concerning the pogrom in california against the users of medicinal marijuana...the response i got from the politician's staffers was a collective "uh duh?"

FoM...
i just got off the phone with rick rodriguez, executive editor with the bee...he had not heard about this story...he stated that the bee does cover the medical marijuana issue...when i brought up the mollie fry raid and asked him why they took five days to publish anything about it, he stated that they had picked up the story from a smaller local paper and sent a reporter to investigate...when i suggested that this issue is tied together with our 1st amendment rights, i detected ALOT more interest in my call...near the end of the conversation, i suggested that the DEA's activities bear much more attention than the bee has been giving them...he said he would look into it...my impression from this (10 minute) conversation is that major newspapers have become lazy and disinterested in issues of importance...they go for the easy(wire service) headlines...locally, the police and fire departments get good coverage...followups on mass murders and such stories fill the pages...issues, such as ours, don't sell advertising...i resubscribed to the bee a few days ago...1/2 price for 3 months...i need mulch for my vegetable garden this spring...i don't know if i'll read even one of them(unless i read online that washington D.C. has disappeared...i'd FRAME that one if they cover it)

I don't know why any of the papers are not using articles about these raids except things have changed since September 11th and censorship sure seems to be getting worse.

thanks for the info...and i wasn't in any way questioning your or map's integrity...i'm just incredulous that a paper such as the bee would ignore this story...i'm afraid that no matter how much we distrust the government and the mainstream media, we are still short of the truth...

I'm assuming that any article you post here that is copyrighted must have it's source printed in the appropriate place...

If it was on the Sacramento Bee WIRE articles I would have only used the AP not Sacramento Bee. I wish I could tell you more but legally this is how I must do this. We are not allowed currently, until this is settled, to use the Sacramento Bee or affiliates. E-mail Richard Lake and he should be abe to explain legally why we must do things they way we are. I can't use the Modesto Bee anymore either. I don't post any articles from those papers anymore. Hope this helps.

Excerpt's from San Franscisco Chronicle
A Throwback Drug Czar
Source: San Francisco Chronicle
Published: Tuesday, October 30, 2001
Copyright: 2001 San Francisco Chronicle Page A - 16
The Senate must soon decide whether U.S. policies on fighting drug abuse will return to the failed, lock-'em-up focus of previous years or continue their current trend toward emphasizing treatment and education.

In the next few days, the Judiciary Committee is expected to vote whether to confirm John Walters, President Bush's nominee as director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

It is the last Cabinet position to come before Congress, but the vote has been delayed in part by controversy over Walters' hard-line views.

The decision is expected to be close and will likely be decided by four swing votes: Democrats Dianne Feinstein of California, Charles Schumer of New York and Russell Feingold of Wisconsin, plus Republican Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania.

These senators have reason to consider voting for Walters, mainly to continue the post-September 11 congressional show of unity behind the president. The position of drug czar is a crucial one, directing the federal government's $19 billion in anti-drug programs and serving as a moral leader in the just-say-no campaign focused on America's youth.

But the need to rally around the flag and fill an important job do not compensate for Walters' many failings:

He wants to escalate U.S. military involvement in the Latin American drug war at the expense of funding for domestic drug treatment and education (which have repeatedly proved to be the most cost-effective way of reducing drug use).

I got an idea on how to explain this better. If you check this article it is from Salon.com but if you scroll to the bottom of the page you will see the Copyright is the AP. I thought this was an easy way to help explain the Copyright stuff. It can be very confusing I know because it was for me for a long time. When an article is by the Associated Press and it has a time stamp like (AP) I'm to use the Copyright of the Associated Press. That's what I was taught and I am not sure where the article came from without really thinking about it and maybe I would remember. Often an AP article appears in many papers at one time ( Like the Las Vegas Sun or SF Gate etc.) but it still is an Associated Press article. I hope I haven't confused you. If I have ask me another question and I'll try to answer.

This is kind of weird.A few days ago, I asked a couple of people who keep in regular contact with me to post messages here and a few other places in the event that I become the victim of a "disappearance."I don't think there's too much to worry about unless/until the government starts shutting down the Net. If even one of us were to "disappear" I'm sure that there would be strong reactions not just from patrons of this site, but from many others as well. There might be protests on campuses, in major cities, etc. Even the right-wing groups might come to our defense. But if the Net is crippled, they can silence us, one by one... and no one will even know about it...

No need to suspend the 2004 election...
Why bother suspending the election when you can control the outcome?Back in the good old days (2000), I had a very strong feeling that Bush's campaign was a sort of "litmus test" of the stupidity of the American sheeple, i.e. they were testing the waters to see how much they could get away with. They succeeded beyond their wildest expectations, so now they're pulling out all the stops. They're implementing their program, slowly but surely.P.T. Barnum said, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people." Unfortunately, he's right...

Treason
With bin Laden on the loose, and anthrax being mailed to government institutions, we still have members in law enforcement chasing pot plants??? It makes one wonder if all the "resources" of government are being brought to bear on terrorism. Oh wait! Maybe the government now considers sick and dying medical cannabis users terrorists? What does that make us recreational pot smokers? Terrorists squared? By growing my own pot I do more to fight crime than these badge wearing morons. The DEA cops with the time to do this are cowards not worthy of the badge they wear. I sit here comfortable in my home wishing I could do something more to bring about justice for the victims of 9/11 while the DEA chases sick people cause they smoke pot! This is tantamount to TREASON. FRICKIN COWARDS. They should be investigating terrorist threats. I suppose that in their peas sized brains they are. I agree with dddd it ain't pretty!

well said everybody...
i've a suggestion to make...i've said things here and elsewhere that would get me hung if the government succeeds in establishing a "star chamber"(secret "trials" followed by elimination)...all of us should stay in touch with someone we trust who would be aware of it if we were to suddenly disappear one night...if such were to happen, a post here and elsewhere might give others of us time to go underground...although these kind of tactics still seem a little farfetched, i'm not discounting the possibilty that ANYTHING can happen in the next few years...these midnight raids are a hallmark of totalitarian regimes...if they cancel the 2004 elections, we can assume that anybody with a badge or in uniform is the enemy and act accordingly...(run for your lives...)

Bull's Eye, Dan...
Right you are. Nice doin' business with ya!The white Federal Government and all the business sorts that supported it in the 1800's set about to push the native american off their land, by any means available, fair or foul.It was, and remains, a clash of cultures in that the natives valued the real world and the land in a vastly different manner than the whites. I think that the natives understood whites, but the whites did not, nor need to, understand the natives. The white man came to despise the native because the native lived so differently..and wasn't a christian. They lived as free as humans could possibly live. After the ravages of disease - which killed the bulk of native population, Federal Goverment policies and the prejudices of "good christians" vanquished the remainder. Their culture was attacked: thier children removed from them and forbidden to learn the native tongues, forced off their lands to live on squalid reservations (Ethnic cleasing? Concentration camps?) With the resevation system came reliance on handouts from the government - the birth of the Welfare system - and the termination of their free lives. This was the death of their Spirit and is the looming reason for the outrageous rate of alcoholism among those left.We note that native american continue to be forcefully kept helpless as the DEA each year assaults thier attempts to grow harmelss hemp. Thier spirit is to remain as crushed as possible. After the supposed abolition of slavery, "freed" blacks were "allowed" to stay on and work for families. They'd often get supplies - on credit - from their former owners. Of course they could never pay off the debts they incurred and were, uh..., slaves again. This was called the Peonage System. It is the model on which the modern consumer culture is based. We are to be good consumers, buying things and working day and night. We are expected to be in debt so that we have to work, so that we live in fear of losing our jobs. We are encouraged to confuse ownership of material items as the criteria for success and we are to frown on those who do not walk in lock step with us on every single decision. Those who break step will now be caled "terrorists" and ther will be no need for evidence to be presented, your lawer will be told to go screw him or herself. We are all about to get the Kubby Treatment.FREEDOM ENDURES

The Press is getting theirs, too!
I, and several others here, regularly point out the media's complicity in the "war against some drugs and certain sorts of people we dont like": now it seems as if the same John Ashcroft they have loved to suck up to is rewarding their patriotism with subpeonas for some reporters private phone records and seeks to violate-eliminate the reporter's right to confidentiality, too.here are some links to stories on the AP website - http://www.ap.org/pages/whatsnew/coverquest.html - the mainpagehttp://www.ap.org/pages/whatsnew/records.htmlhttp://www.ap.org/pages/whatsnew/subpoena.htmlhttp://www.ap.org/pages/whatsnew/explanation.html3 stories related to Ashcroft and his office seeking records of reporters and some discussion of the importance of whats happening. The big issue is if they will report on thier OWN constitutional rape, after ignoring that of cannabis culture and other minority sub-populations (no matter how global they might be). The AP is clearly writing about it...but will the commercial media pick it up? I think the story is too complicated for mainstream amerika - too many words, too much constitutional law. No car chases.. the War on Druuuugs has car chases and big guns and clear-cut "good-guys and bad-guys""..its much more entertaining. No, the commercial media is complict in the dumbing down of amerika. They only half-tell stories, focus solely on the emotional aspects and try to keep from reporting any real substance. The Internet kicks major ass by allowing presentaion of competing viewpointsna d allowing the interested reader - moi! - to research topics in depth. This is why intellectuals are despised and villified by Totalitarian Governments. Its why stalin and Mao, and Paul Pot killed millions and millions of educated people. The whole situtaion makes me think of the building of the Pyramids - after all these people toiled to build them, they were killed and buried underneath them, unnecessary anymore..as well as for "national security".So we have the emerging picture of our Federal Government seeking to chill free speech, destroy the concept of confidentiality whereever it exisits...except for DICK Cheney, of course. The raids all across California are siezing patient records and judges are ruling against confidentiality, setting up precedents for industrial-application of "sweeping new powers".They havent arrested anybody, by the way, because they haven't figured out how to rig a jury that will convict them the way the Feds want convicitions. Juries won't convict the medical users in California. And we have yet to see raids in Nevada, but they can't be far behind. For awhile, it seems smart to lay low: to act as if our freedoms HAVE been compromised and that we are not safe in our homes. That we will be searched without recourse to legal counsel and our Constitutioanl rights are suspended. Its getting dark, outside.FREEDOM ENDURES

It's not just cannabis culture
Dr. Zombie, I agree with everything you have to say, but I want to expand on one aspect of it:Again: NAZI's had the Jews, China has Falun Gong...Amerika has canabis culture. In fact, they are going after the cannabis culture, but the scope of the new fascist state is much larger and more ominous than that. The country has been taken over by a corporate elitist oligarchy whose mission is to insure that the working class and poor continue to increase (or at least maintain) their already burdensome labors in order to siphon ever larger amounts of money and power to their corporate handlers. They also want the working class and the poor to remain ignorant of the criminal organization that now runs the country. The goal is complete control over every aspect of the citizens' lives, and that is why cannabis culture is targeted--that culture, perhaps more than any other, has taken off the blinders and sees the truth. But I want to make this perfectly clear: cannabis culture is but one segment of society that will be and is already affected.I was going to provide a list of accusations against particular members of the current administration, but I know we are all now being watched. Suffice to say that the plan for a fascist takeover has been in the works for decades, and one crime family stands out as the principal instigator for this takeover. And the person who is now in power is not the center of power, but he's at the right hand of the sinister spider who spins in the center of this ominous web.Dan B

The Cold War comes Home.
In little more than a month after we were attacked - supposedly by terrorist forces of a foriegn source - Team Bush has turned this country from "America" to "amerika": a glitzy, for-profit version of the old Soviet Union.Anybody who Team Bush doesn't like can now be arbitrarily labeled a "terrorist" and can have their CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS completely suspended in a microsecond. In 1998 there was the UNGASS Assembly to discuss differnt appraoches to the "war on Drugs". This assembly - proposed by Mexico - was , of course, shanghai=ed by the DEA and Arlacchi the Disaster (now deposed arrogant clusterf**k) advised that elimination of freedom of speech "in countries with such policies" should be curtailed in the interest of the FASCIST goal of unanimity in the "war on Druuuugs".Now America is speeding down the road to a complete FAscist conversion. The groundwork is laid, Homeland security is clearly the birth of Domestic Pascification, where the army will assume more and more of a police role in our country. I'm now waiting to be told that the 2004 elctions that us freedom-loving people are so looking forward to, will be suspended. National Security, you know.Ashcroft, Hutchinson and Walters are obviously behind this major anti-cannabis offensive, and to them - obviously - it is THIER priority that Federal Tax dollars go to thwart the will of the people and to persecute cannabis culture. It is clear they consider harrassment of HARMLESS cannabis smokers -LAW-ABIDING, NON-VIOLENT, SOCIASLLY PROGRESSIVE, INTELLIGENT, MOTIVATED, and OFTEN PROFESSIONALY EMPLOYED AMERICANS - as important as killing supposed terrorists. It is the MEDIA -TELEVISION and ther NEWSPAPERS who are complicit in the war agaonst cannabis culture. This event here is HUGE because the CITY helped build and maintain this cannabis club. It is City Officials protesting the FEDERAL Governmant Stormtroopers -
the DEA(th squads) - violating STATE'S RIGHTS, AMERICANS rights, and forcibly showing america it thumbs it's nose at what they think and believe. The MEDIA is not conveying the story. Its on the "wire" as they say - it's an AP story. But the media who pick up stories to broadcast- don't. This is how the suppression of both the Reality of the size of the cannabis reform movement and of the atrocities committed by the Federal Government. It cloaks the fascist legislation in patriotic terms- Sweeeping new powers to combat terrorism".Well, LA, welcome to sweeping new powers.Time, I guess, to move everything BACK underground. Clinics need much more security, lots and lots of video surveillence. They need to have some people at each clininc who have some rapport with smaller local community papers to try and spread the word about the escalation of the Paperwork Coup that is taking place as we wacth our freedoms and our liberties being usurped by FASCISTS.The COLD War has come home - all the fancy gadgetry will be pointed out US, our homes, and everyplace we wanna go. There will be thermographic snooping inside our homes, we will be x-rayed to death by "harmless" x-ray machines, we will all be required to have "smart-visa's" with our retinal scans fingerprints, legal record, shool records, and god-knows-what-else crammed into them so we can move around. They'll try to get rid of cash so that evry single penny we spend can be tracked and frozen if need be, should there be an unwarranted outbreak of independent thought.Again: NAZI's had the Jews, China has Falun Gong...Amerika has canabis culture. ...It is now clear....It is no longer necessary for anyone to be charged with a crime,,,for federal SWAT teams to raid your business,or residence, and confiscate anything they want,,,and to seize your bank accounts, and all other property or assets they can find....I find this to be quite FREEKIN ALARMING!..
...the dea no longer needs to worry about ANYTHING they may choose to do...believe it or not,,anything they do from now on,is covered by the new anti-terror bill that was signed into law Friday...I'm not kidding..... Everything is different now...whatever you thought you knew about your rights, and freedom has changed... Is there anyone out there who doubts what I am saying?..If so,,I'm looking forward to hearing from you.. We aint in Kansas anymore Toto.....If you are an American citizen,,you might as well go get yourself a turban at your local Arab Depot Superstore,,and change your name to bin Laden...you are now guilty,,and you are restricted in trying to prove your innocence. You can be held behind bars,at an undisclosed location indefinitly......it aint pretty.....dddd

Who is being charge with what?
For the last several weeks, DEA been raiding all over the places in Calif. But, not one person being charge with something..I feel real bad for these sick people. To read something like this;Marlene Rasnick, who suffers from ovarian cancer, urged her fellow patients to protest the federal government's action against the center. "Medical marijuana made it possible for me to sit in my garden and enjoy my friends," she said. "If the federal government wants to say life is over, I don't accept that." Here we have sick people fighting for their lives at the same time fighting their own government. Are we truly cowards who do not care about our fellow sick human beings? Is this a government who will declare sick people terrorists? ff
