Legislators Seek to Make Dance-Club Potion Illegal

It's known as Blue Nitro, the latest in a series of drugs popular in all-night dance clubs for its euphoric effect. It's also dangerous, officials say, causing blackouts and even death among users. ``It's a major problem,'' said Lt. Kitt Crenshaw of the San Francisco Narcotics Division. ``A lot of kids are getting into this stuff.'' 
In response to increasing concerns from health and law enforcement officials, state legislators are looking to ban the dietary supplement gamma-butyrolactone, or GBL, popularly known by the brand name Blue Nitro. GBL is a cousin of gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, which was banned by the Legislature in 1997. Once it enters the bloodstream, GBL turns into GHB. In small doses, GBL brings about euphoria, including increased sexual desire and energy. But in larger doses or mixed with alcohol, GBL becomes a powerful sedative causing blackout-like sleep.
