  Marijuana Induces Minimum Driving Impairment!

This is true!
Source: NORML

Toronto, Ontario Drivers under the influence of marijuana pose far fewer risks on roadways than do drivers intoxicated by alcohol, a new University of Toronto study suggests. The study corroborates earlier research demonstrating that marijuana is not a significant causal factor in traffic accidents.
"The failure of the Toronto University researchers to observe a significant effect of marijuana on driving culpability is consistent with findings from earlier studies," NORML Foundation Executive Director Allen St. Pierre said. He noted that a May 1998 study by the University of Adelaide (South Australia) Department of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology determined, "There was no evidence of any increase in the likelihood of being culpable for [automobile] crash[es] amongst those injured drivers in whom cannabinoids were detected. ... [Their] culpability rates were no higher than those for the drug free group." Alcohol is a dangerous drug not Cannabis!

Driving under the influence

I have to say that I don't really think that marijuana is that big of a problem while driving. I have driven plenty of times stoned and I am aware that your depth perception is altered to a certain extent but you know when I drive high I am always aware of my surroundings and I make it a point to use caution always. I've never had a problem.

There is some risk!

We were trying to figure out if where you might have had an accident is called the road to no where. My husband thinks that's what a road was called over there. You're right about some risk to driving while high on Pot. You probably won't believe this but I can't recall more then one time driving after smoking. I was coming home from Camp Conrad Weiser and came down thru Shillington, I think. I couldn't judge my distance and it scared me so I stopped! That was simple! When I got prescription drugs from the Doctor I drove with them an had a single car accident. I think driving under the influence of prescription, mind altering drugs is worse then marijuana!

Less risky yes, but safe NO WAY!

Marijuana most certainly effects driving, but in a different way which may explain part of the reason marijuana is safer than alcohol in regards to driving.HOWEVER, marijuana most certainly does have an effect and contrary to what some activists would have people believe marijuana does lead to some, but admittly few, car crashes. From personal experience I've found that driving stoned does not seem to effect coordination in regards to staying the lane, etc BUT does have a negative effect on one's concentration and depth perception which I feel are the cause of the few marijuana related crashes. I can recall on several occasions while driving stoned stopping at inappropriate locations, forgetting where I was going, and dazing out. This latter effect nearly killed me at the approach ramp to Rt 422 West located near Dennys in Wyomissing, PA. I can remember vividly driving down the hill (Sharaton on my left) towards the ramp at exactly 40 MPH through the intersection to the divided approach ramp on the opposite side when all of sudden I went into a momentary daze and thought I was on a four lane divided highway...a second or so later I snapped back to reality when I realized the green median strip was an illusion and instead saw concrete rapidly rising up from nowhere. I found myself heading towards the concrete divider of the approach ramp. Needless to say I swerved sharply onto the sholder/grass at the last second to avoid the barrier. Luckly I was able to regain control and arrived home safely. That was among the closest calls of my life - a fraction of a second longer delay and I'd been airborne at 40 MPH and who knows maybe dead or at least badly injured.Marijuana intoxication is somewhat different to alcohol intoxication in that relexes and coordination are not affected much giving one a false sense of control when I've found one's concentration and depth perception among other things are effected greatly by marijuana intoxication.Bottom line is don't toke and drive...not always easy in today's current legal/political climate. So if one must drive, use caution or better yet designate a sober driver.Ron Bennett
