Thanks to the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1998, signed into law by President Clinton on October 7 last year, students receiving federal financial aid who are convicted of a drug offense, no matter how minor, will lose that aid for at least one year.
Recently, however, a student-led campaign to overturn this provision of the HEA has gained momentum. College newspapers across the nation have run stories, and students are calling on their university governments for support. In response, Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank on March 25 introduced a House bill, which would mitigate these penalties for student marijuana offenders, at least. Its chances of passing, though, are dim, given the cowardice of most other national legislators to even address the issue. If they keep taking more rights away, we will see more unrest in our society then we already see now!Click on the link for more information!
