Seattle, WA -- Patients authorized to possess or grow marijuana for medical reasons under Washington law would be limited to 24 ounces of harvested marijuana, plus six mature plants and 18 immature plants, according to an official draft rule filed by the state Department of Health today.The filing of the draft rule starts a rule-making process and a public-comment period. A hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 25 in Tumwater, Thurston County. The draft reduces amounts earlier considered by the health department and revealed in a "talking points" memo used to brief Gov. Christine Gregoire in February. Health-department officials said in the February memo that they planned to recommend 35 ounces of harvested marijuana plus 100 square feet of plant-growing area. Gregoire's staff told health-department officials the amount appeared to be on the high side, and that law enforcement and medical providers should be consulted. The health department convened an advisory panel consisting mainly of law-enforcement officials and a single doctor — a public-health HIV/AIDS expert who does not care for patients directly. Law-enforcement officials have said their main concern is being able to distinguish legitimate patients from those who are hiding behind the law to grow and sell large amounts of marijuana. They said they consider 3 ounces a reasonable amount for the 60-day supply specified in Washington's law, passed by voters in 1998. That law allows patients with certain chronic, fatal or debilitating diseases to possess a 60-day supply with a doctor's authorization. | 12x12 is considered immature...so long as there are no flowers on it. Which means small clones flowered early or autoflower are still considered mature. [ Post Comment ] |

| I just read in my e-mail that a plant is considered immature if it is under 12 inches high and not more than 12 inches wide. [ Post Comment ] |

| Fom some patients, 24 oz will be a year's supply. But for others, especially those who use cannabis in cooking, 24 oz will last only a few weeks. Instead of calculating that in pin-joints ("Oh my god, that's 24 * 28 * 4 = 2688 marijuana cigarettes! Enough to intoxicate a couple of battalions!" etc, etc), compare cannabis to coffee beans. How long does 24 ounces of coffee last? About a week or two? [ Post Comment ] |

| I was surprised at 24 ounces for 2 months. How can 6 adult plants produce 24 ounces every two months though? That would be highly unlikely I would think. To be realistic how much could 6 plants produce in two months? [ Post Comment ] |

| Sounds like a reasonable amount to me, except that we should be allowed to fill our barns with marijuana if we want too. It's none of the government's business and it's not authorized by the Constitution. [ Post Comment ] |

Washington's Health Department says 24 ounces should be the typical two-month supply of medical marijuana for approved patients. The Health Department previously suggested 35 ounces as a guideline. But the agency changed its estimate after Gov. Chris Gregoire told officials to consult with police and doctors. Washington's suggested two-month supply would mirror Oregon's rule: 24 ounces of pot, along with six mature plants and 18 immature plants. The agency will take more public comment before settling on a final rule defining a two-month supply of medical pot.
